Queenie Sal 05-158

Profile

6/10/05: Queenie Sal is from a puppy mill in Missouri. She is almost three years old and weighs about 78 pounds. She is timid and skittish, but does seek out humans and loves to be petted and brushed. She is very calm and follows me everywhere, as long as she doesn?t have to go up or down stairs. She gets along well with our 9 month old resident Golden. He is trying really hard to teach her how to have some doggy fun, but she isn?t very interested in playing just yet. Although, she has shown some interest in the dog toys and is especially curious about the squeaky toys. She will need to be placed in an adoptive home that has another dog to help her feel more comfortable and teach her the joys of living in a loving home. If you are interested in being that loving home for this beautiful girl, please email Placementatragom [dot] org.

Salli just returned from a few days of rest and relaxation in Detroit Lakes. Salli is such an easy dog to travel with. She still needs a boost to get in the car, but then lays right down and doesn’t make a peep. She thoroughly enjoyed visiting “Foster Grandma” who lives on the lake. Salli is usually so calm and laidback, but get her around the water and she sure perks up. She absolutely loves swimming and playing in the water. As you can see from the picture, she was too tired to even eat!

Salli was also a perfect house guest. We didn’t pack the dog crates since they take up so much room in the car. Instead we blocked Salli off with a baby gate in a small room while we were gone for a few hours. She behaved like an angel. Also, the potty training is going well and Salli didn’t have any accidents, even in a new house!! Salli even got to sleep next to the bed and again passed with flying colors. Foster Grandma thinks Salli is one sweet dog and can’t believe no one has expressed an interest in her yet. If you are interested in meeting Salli, she will be at the Burnsville Petco on Saturday, July 9th from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. I know she is anxious to meet her forever family!

Salli continues to enjoy the good life! Since she can’t go on long walks, we have been spending some time in the wetland area behind our house. She loves to stroll through the long weeds and explore each area. She seems very confident and almost puppy-like on these adventures. She is still a little timid inside the house, but she never runs and hides. She just watches closely and if she sees something she’s unsure of (like the vacuum), she just moves to a different spot. This weekend we had company and she did well with them. They have a 4 year old daughter and Salli was great with her. I still think she would do best with older kids just because they would be more respectfully of her shyness, but the occasional younger visitor definitely wouldn’t be a problem.

We also took Salli out to the lake to see how she liked swimming. She LOVED it!! She jumped right in and wasn’t at all nervous. It was really funny watching her stick her whole head under water. She even retrieved a few times and with some more practice I think she’d become even more interested!! Next to the lake, there was an area with long weeds and I couldn’t tell if she had more fun in the weeds or the water. Salli also did very well in the car on the way to the lake and the way home. Previously, we only had her in the car when we originally took her home and when we went to the vet. She was terrified both times. This time she tried to get in by herself, but ended up needing a little help and then she laid right down and was the perfect passenger.

Since Salli is feeling more confident of herself and her surroundings, we are going to start working on some simple commands this week. She’s such a mellow dog that she probably wouldn’t need to learn any commands, but I think all dogs should at least know sit and down. We’ll keep you posted on her progress! Of course, if you are interested in adopting Salli, don’t wait any longer to email Placementatragom [dot] org and you can teach her these commands yourself! Some family is going to be very lucky to add such a wonderful dog to their home!

Salli continues to come out of her shell more and more. She continues to follow the lead of our dog, Gus, and is engaging in play several times a day with him (see pictures). She is very good with him and puts up with most of his puppy antics (more than I do). Ideally though, her adoptive home will have an older, calmer dog for her to continue to learn from. She also needs a family that can respect her timid nature. I believe she would do best in a home with adults only or with children 12 and older. Potty training is also going very well for Salli. She’s only had one accident in the past week!!!!

Salli went to the vet last Wednesday and got some good news and some bad news. First, her incision from where she was spayed was all healed up and the stitches were ready to come out. She also has two small lumps, one on her tail and the other on her neck. The vet thought a biopsy should be done on these lumps to rule out cancer. Not enough cells were taken from one of the lumps, but the other came back negative for cancer. That’s the good news! Part of the bad news is she has a double ear infection, but we’re taking care of that. However, we also found out Salli has a heart murmur. At first, I thought this was horrible news, but the vet thought she must be a pretty tough girl to have already lived 3 years and survived giving birth at least once (probably more!). He thought she probably wouldn’t have any problems and will more than likely live a happy, long life with the right family. The vet said she should be limited to very short walks (2-4 blocks) and care should be taken not to over exert her. She loves just hanging out and lying around the house, so it won’t be a problem for her to relax and take it easy (I think she’s been waiting her whole life to hear this news!). She now she needs an adoptive family who is looking for a forever friend to always be at their side. If you’re interested in meeting Salli, please email Placementatragom [dot] org.

For the first few days, we experimented with Queenie Sal’s name and tried some different variations. It was obvious she didn’t know her name in any form. We all began calling her Sal, which just seemed to fit her better than Queenie. She is beginning to respond to Sal, which has now sometimes become Salli.

Sal has now mastered going up and down stairs, even though she’s not very confident yet. She’s still timid when being approached (especially quickly), but once she realizes she’s going to be petted, she will hang out next to you forever. She is definitely a Velcro dog.

She had a quick bath yesterday, which she did not like very much. She still has stitches from being spayed, so we were careful just to wash the top part of her. She will be visiting the vet on Wednesday and hopefully the stitches can come out then. Salli really enjoyed a peanut butter Kong after her bath (see picture). Today she had her first Frosty Paw treat. She LOVED it and even wanted to eat the plastic cup.

We continue to work on potty training. She has had a few accidents. Some of them have been my fault for not watching her closely enough. Today, we have made it outside every time!! Hopefully, that’s the beginning of a new pattern!

Sal is also a very good sleeper. She has been sleeping in her crate at night. Salli sometimes chooses to nap there too (see picture – Sallie is on the right). She sleeps all night from 11:00 to about 6:00. I think she would actually sleep later, but our resident dog, Gus, wakes her up.

More about Salli after we visit the vet.

Be sure to email Placementatragom [dot] org if you are looking for a calm, loving, adorable dog.
