Rocky here with a hot summer update! My humans are doing their best to keep me cool with more indoor time and dips in various lakes and rivers. I've enjoyed urban hikes and trips to Theodore Wirth, Duluth, and Crosby Manitou this spring and summer. I really enjoy remote camping as there are fewer people around to bark at and I can roam on a longer leash.

I've also received some awesome BarkBoxes from my Aunt Lili, which have been a highlight of my summer. The toys are so fun and I love tearing them apart.

The new patio furniture has been a nice addition to our yard. I love taking over the whole couch!

Rock 18-007

This weekend, we tried out a Frisbee golf course. I wasn't too excited about those flying saucers. I kept jumping on my fosters to protect them. I much prefer tennis balls over Frisbees!

Rock 18-007

Afterwards, we went to our local restaurant that allows dogs on their large patio. It was after the dinner rush and no other dogs were around. I was so well-behaved this time (those flying saucers really wore me out), I even got rewarded with a few French fries.

Although I'm quite comfortable here in my Minneapolis neighborhood, I'd still really like to meet a person or a family that lives a quiet life and yearns for a loyal companion. Since I have a hard time with change, I need a person or a family with consistent routines who enjoys being at home.

My foster parents travel too much and have a lot of little people in their lives. I do okay with these little people, but sometimes I get too jumpy and excited around food, which makes me lose my manners. I am a better dog when I'm around adults!

If you're a patient person who understands dogs with special behavioral needs and enjoys training, please apply for me. I'd love the opportunity to get to know you!

Happy New Year!

Rocky took another big trip with his foster family to Milwaukee for a week. With a little help from his trazodone medication, Rocky did excellently during the 5-plus-hour drive. Rocky settled in fairly well to the rented Airbnb. He's starting to like life on the road.

However, due to some unexpected neighborhood issues, we abruptly moved to another location on day 2. Poor Rocky was so concerned during this stressful time. As a foster, it breaks your heart, not being able to tell your furry friend directly, "It's going to be okay," in the same language. To our surprise, the new Airbnb location was even better for Rocky. It was small, yet cozy with an open floor plan. Rocky loves being able to keep an eye on all the action.

We couldn't be more proud to share that Rocky helped to entertain a small group of people and two children, one being a toddler and the other just under 1 years old. After the initial introduction, Rocky remained on his bed through the evening as we opened belated holiday gifts and spent time giggling over the kids' entertainment. Rocky tolerated supervised toddler pets and loved getting extra treats for his outstanding behavior.

This weekend, we were back in Minneapolis and enjoyed getting out and about in the neighborhood. Rocky loves his local parks! On Sunday, we took a day trip to Lake Maria State Park and went snowshoeing for 2.5 hours, and Rocky was a champ. He desperately tries to tear off the booties, but eventually gives up because he knows they're his only saving grace in the snow.

With every new adventure we go on, we learn something new about Rocky. We've said it before and will say it again: he's one loyal dog. We don't know why he had a history of aggression, but with each day that goes by, we see him grow into a tremendous companion and friend. Please consider adopting this special guy!

In mid-December, Rocky helped host his fosters' newest nephew who is only 7 months old. Rocky was very curious and wanted so badly to be right near all the action; however, due to his history of aggression, he was never allowed in the same room as the baby. Rocky tolerated the baby gates and the extra peanut butter Kongs, but he did not particularly enjoy this change in routines. He was vocal about his feelings and often required time-outs.

Rocky spent Christmas day with his fosters cooking up a Surf & Turf feast and enjoyed having just his foster grandparents over. He has grown to love their company!

After the holiday season, Rocky eagerly jumped in the car, ready for the next adventure, as long as we were all together. He was given a low dose of Trazodone to limit additional stress for the long car ride, and he did great.

Rocky slept during most of the five-hour drive to International Falls, where, unlike some other cabins or rental properties, he settled in quickly. It helped that the cabin was very dog-friendly and extremely cozy. Rocky loved the northern land and thoroughly enjoyed running in the deep snow and long snowshoe treks through the woods.

Rocky 18-007

We learned quickly that Rainer, MN, has a no-leash policy for dogs, Nevertheless, we kept Rocky on his leash in accordance with RAGOM's policy, and he behaved marvelously, considering his past tendencies to react negatively to other dogs.

During our first walk, we were greeted by four dogs who circled us and wanted to interact/play. Rocky did not bark or growl once during this encounter; he simply watched his foster mom for directions and took treats for his good behavior. He is intrigued by other dogs, but once he greets them, he'd prefer if they left him alone!

All in all, we are very proud of the tremendous progress Rocky has made, especially in the way he looks to us for leadership when we meet other dogs. With continued training as well as bonding with his new family, Rocky will excel as a faithful companion.

Rocky continues to tolerate changes in his fosters' busy lifestyles, but definitely prefers a normal routine at home. If you're someone looking for a loyal companion and love being home, Rocky would make a wonderful addition to your life!

Hello, potential adopters. Rocky here with a December update...

First of all, thank goodness for some snow yesterday. I love that white, sparkly stuff! A light dusting is the best - just enough to grease up my paws, but not enough to have to wear those booties.

My fosters and I had a busy weekend. We dropped off some holiday goodies for some human friends in the burbs, and I was a really good travel companion. We checked out a new park, which sometimes makes me anxious. I still remained on my best behavior as we passed other furry friends, but I really just like getting back to the car so I know I'm heading home. I guess they call me a homebody!

Rocky 18-007

Last week, I had my annual behavioral evaluation and routine vet visit, and they both went great! I'm a healthy, well-behaved 4-year-old boy! Maybe I've been a little too  good, because now they have me on a diet! I blame my fosters, as they're just not used to being home all the time and they love me so much and all my tricks. These have been the positives to this pandemic - more time with my fosters and more delicious treats!

Rocky 18-007

My foster parents left me in August and November with some newbies: Aunt Holly and my foster grandparents! Wow, did these people love me, and I look forward to their visits again.

I regret to say that I had a tough spring due to some new symptoms. Sometimes when I lay on the hardwood floor, I start paddling my legs. My fosters say that I look like I'm paddling through water while I sleep. Sometimes I even stick out my tongue and lick.

My fosters were pretty worried and started tracking my sleep episodes around the clock. They worked with my behaviorist and trialed several medications, but none seemed to change my habits. They also consulted a neurologist, who agreed my symptoms are abnormal, but not epileptic in nature.

So, for now, we call my episodes "sleep disturbances," as I always snap out of them quickly. My fosters just have to wake me or say the word "treat" and I'm the out of my trance. These sleep disturbances were occurring pretty frequently throughout the spring and summer, but since the fall, I seem to be doing well. Maybe it's the weather - who knows.

Rocky 18-007

Well, I hope this has been some exciting reading. Life is pretty good, but i'd really like to meet a family that loves to be at home as much as I do, I hope to meet you soon!

Happy Holidays,

Rocky

Rocky is back and ready to find his forever home! Rocky and his foster family have worked hard over the last five months to keep daily routines, limit stressful stimuli, and allow him time to relax.

Additionally, Rocky met with a behaviorist and is taking daily Fluoxetine (an anti-anxiety medication) to help calm his anxiety and reduce his intermittent aggression. He has certainly calmed down, learned some new tricks, become less reactive in the neighborhood, and started to enjoy invited pets again.

Rocky 18-007

During the stay-at-home period, Rocky has been excelling even more and has earned free roam of the house. His days of counter-surfing and getting into laundry baskets are of the past. Rocky is looking forward to more training with his foster family in the coming weeks to allow for better handling to keep him a healthy and clean boy!

Rocky 18-007

Rocky may not be the most straightforward pup, but he has a huge heart and strives to please. If you enjoy training and working with dogs, Rocky is an incredible companion and will surely bring joy to your home every day!

Where does the summer go?! Rocky has been keeping busy with lots of summer hikes and cool dips wherever he can. He loves to swim for sticks! He also enjoys backyard barbecues and evening bonfires with his humans.

After successfully completing his course at Canine Coach, he's been showing off all his patience skills around the neighborhood. Rocky has a few favorite neighbor dogs that he loves to visit and is always on his best behavior.

Rocky has adjusted well to an adult roommate that moved into his fosters' home. They've spent weekends together while his fosters have been to dog-free cabins (how silly is that?). Rocky's new friend cannot say enough good things about his dog-sitting adventures.

Rocky 18-007

Rocky continues to be the highlight of his fosters' day. As much as we wish we could keep him, we know there's a special family waiting to fall in love with this little sweetie!

As the seasons change, we continue to learn Rocky’s needs and have enjoyed watching him bloom this spring!

Rocky has been welcoming two special volunteers into his home every Thursday and Friday for an afternoon walk. These visits have turned into his weekly highlights. Rocky has even been taken on a few field trips to this family’s home and is turning into an excellent gardening partner.

Rocky 18-007
Rocky 18-007

Rocky especially loves running freely in their big, fenced-in yard and always enjoys a refreshing dip in the kiddy pool. He keeps telling us how he’d love a bigger yard at his forever home!

Rocky has been excelling at his Canine Coach class every Monday evening. He has been working hard learning patience, staying calm, and listening to directions alongside five other dogs. Rocky’s tendencies to pull, lunge, or bark at another dog or critter have dramatically decreased.

Rocky just loves walking in his neighborhood to show off all of his new skills. At last night's class, one of the student dogs (a Pug) got loose from their leash and jumped and barked in Rocky's face. Rocky did not act out or bark once; instead, he turned to his fosters for direction. We were so proud of our little fur-buddy!

Rocky 18-007

Rocky’s also been enjoying weekend adventures to a variety of MN cities to explore the outdoors and hike in the woods. He was an excellent course marshal at his foster dad's race in the cities and did not bark once at the runners cruising past him.

Rocky 18-007

This past weekend, Rocky joined his fosters on a cabin trip to Nevis, MN. He did great respecting the furniture and tolerated a thunderstorm with ease. Rocky’s favorite part of the weekend was swimming, fetching sticks, special treats, and lounging on the dock.

Rocky 18-007

As much as Rocky loves adventures, he truly loves his routines and pleasing his humans. He has a huge heart and cannot wait to share it with his forever family!

Tuesday, April 30, 2019

Rocky celebrated his third birthday surrounded by RAGOM family and friends! He was extremely spoiled with presents and treats; he definitely ate well his entire birthday week. Rocky is one popular boy who has won over the hearts of many RAGOM volunteers!

We are learning what spring fever looks like for Rocky; he’s estactic to be outside and loves to play or lay in the park with a nice dirty stick! Although he’s not much of a retriever, he’ll entertain his foster mom or foster dad for a short period as they toss a stick around. Rocky seems to get hot quickly, so we’re sure he’ll love getting into any of our 10,000 lakes when the weather warms up.

Rocky’s foster home is in a neighborhood with many other dogs, which has been a bit challenging at times (he gets overly excited and sometimes vocal at the sight of these furry friends). However, with the help of the Gentle Leader and a pouch full of treats, he is making great strides and learning to respect other dogs in their yards and on walks with their humans.

Rocky continues to do great in our household, largely because of ongoing management and training sessions. Rocky loves special treats and therefore continues to be an eager learner.

Currently, we are working on calming techniques, controlling his barking tendencies, and learning “place." Rocky gets very excited and jumpy with visiting friends, but lacks the social cues of personal space and dress clothes. By learning "place," we hope Rocky can feel safe and comfortable, and calmly enjoy a special Kong or treat while friends and family first settle into our home.

Rocky loves his RAGOM family, but he’s ready for his forever family to adopt him and love him up! Rocky is an incredible dog, one not to pass on!

Rocky isn't quite ready to let go of winter... He continues to think he's the king of Northeast Minneapolis!

Rocky loves to perch himself on top of his snow mound in order to monitor the neighborhood, get busy with a stick project, or wiggle his face against it after a long walk with the Gentle Leader. It's Rocky's love for the snow that makes us not even worried about a little April snowstorm!

It's been an exciting couple of weeks for team Rocky.

Rocky has successfully worked through all of the counterconditioning steps outlined in the book Mine! by Jean Donaldson, with a lathered peanut butter jar. Rocky easily surrendered the peanut butter jar after spontaneous placements throughout the house, which is a huge feat, and we are so proud of his progress. Rocky is very food-motivated and loves ham!

In addition, Rocky breezed through the last month without any resource guarding of his treat toys or food dispensers. Counter-surfing was at a minimum. Rocky even earned the privilege of having his Kong in his kennel for short periods (3-4 hrs) without any issues.

Rocky has always had high regards for his yellow food scoop, but recently, he's shown significant self-control between feeding intervals. Rocky no longer jumps up to obtain the contents inside, but simply waits patiently next to the scoop with focused eyes. What a good boy!

Must. Wait. Patiently.

Rocky is such a smarty; with continued training, repetition, and time, he will surely make one well-mannered dog!

Rocky loves bounding through the deep snow, chewing on frozen sticks, and eating snowballs. He hesitates when putting on the winter booties, but who wouldn’t? Once they’re on, it’s cruise time for this four-legged buddy!

After all the exhausting playtime, Rocky finds himself the best seat in the house and basks in the sun as he dozes off. Who could resist this adorable golden?!

Rocky is house and kennel trained and thrives with a consistent routine and environment. He is kenneled during his foster parents’ workday and does fine, but would love a forever home that wouldn’t leave him alone for more than four hours.

Rocky does not like being away from his people or at boarding, so it would be best if the people in his forever home do not travel frequently. Rocky loves local adventures and will eagerly jump into the car with you every time!

An energetic dog such as Rocky thrives in an active home that is dedicated to daily walking and playtime. He is currently given two walks daily, each approximately 30 minutes to an hour. On weekends, he often gets more.

Rocky is very sensitive and needs the contact of his people. He is permitted on furniture in his foster home and would love to be in a forever home that will allow him to sit next to his people in the evening and cuddle. His ideal forever home will provide lots of time together at home. He does not enjoy large gatherings or outings to dog-friendly businesses as it can make him quite anxious.

Enjoying an evening snuggle

Lastly, Rocky needs experienced dog owners in his forever home. A very loving family surrendered him to RAGOM due to his tendencies to resource-guard and counter-surf. His fosters have been working with a professional trainer to learn how to manage his taking and eating of unsuitable objects.

Rocky is learning to trade, but it is, and will continue to be, a work in progress. His resource guarding can be managed, but may always be part of his personality.

Rocky must be adopted into a home that is clean and orderly and without children or other dogs. He should not be allowed in the kitchen or dining room during cooking or eating times. Non-food items need to be kept picked up as well: socks, undergarments, hand towels, etc.

When Rocky has dog toys, he needs to be allowed to play with them undisturbed. Again, his resource guarding is definitely manageable, but will require daily attention and effort.

Rocky is so loveable, his foster family knows he is worth the extra effort!
