Profile

Roger came to RAGOM from a breeder auction and is learning to love the Golden life. He enjoys attention but children in his forever family should be at least 10 years old, as Roger isn’t aware of his size and is easily frightened by unexpected things and loud noises. He will also require another medium to large, confident dog to look to for reassurance and behavior. He hasn’t been tested with cats but displays no prey drive. Roger’s forever home will require a physically fenced yard for his safety and happiness.

To understand why RAGOM will adhere to our requirements for Roger regarding children and another dog, please read about Retired Breeding Dogs.

Roger continues to be a wonderful boy! It is getting easier to get him in and out of the car as long as his mentor dog is with. He enjoys a nice reward at a local drive-through on those car rides. Chicken nuggets were a big hit. We have learned some new things, though, that will help find the perfect family for him.

Roger has not been fond of city noises and recently had an unfortunate interaction with a very friendly sanitation truck driver (but loud truck). Since then, we are not able to walk him as he’s very fearful and pulls like a Clydesdale. That said, he has the interest to walk, just not in the city.

The other thing we’ve learned is that Roger LOVES ‘going to the cabin’. He did great on a very long six-hour ride without any issues. He walked beautifully on the quiet trails and loved going into the water to cool off after a long walk. He also surprised us when he jumped in off the dock when a duck approached a bit too close. I think he was surprised too, wondering how he ended up there. No matter his history, he still has those instincts.

A quiet area or rural environment may be the best thing for Roger. He likes being outside but not without a human. Roger is most happy when he can hang out close by one. He will be your constant companion.

Roger does great with all dogs, which is good as he must have a mentor dog. He started snuggling with me a few weeks ago and loves getting kisses.  He also loves noisy plush toys and frequently makes us laugh when one ends up in the bedroom at night.

Despite his past, Roger has a great aptitude for love and will be a wonderful family member. He will continue to need a patient, loving, and quiet environment to be his best self. Could that be you?

There is much to update on dear Roger, one of the sweetest fosters we've had! He loves getting petted and loved on. One of his favorite backyard activities is giving himself a nice back rub while rolling in the grass. It's adorable.

Potty training seems to have finally 'clicked' with Roger. This is an extra good thing as we have come to believe that being kenneled is very traumatic for him. He was given a chance to earn our trust, being left out in the main living area while running a quick errand. He passed that test and is no longer kenneled in our absence. Yeah Roger!

The Fourth of July week can be pretty frightening for our canine family members but as long as Roger doesn't have to go outside when the noisy stuff happens, he manages well. A few food puzzle toys created a nice diversion for him and the resident pups. He takes a lot of comfort from his humans being nearby.

Roger has healed from his neuter surgery. He enjoyed a hamburger from Burger King on his way home from getting his stitches out (no bun, thank you very much).

Roger has joined the pack on walks again and is now using a halter, which helps minimize the pulling. He has started joining in on doggy play too. Oh, and he has the cutest bark for such a big boy.

Roger will need support to continue gaining confidence in his new life but he has come so far already.

If you want a constant companion, Roger is your guy. He is sweet and loves hanging out at your feet or where he can see you. Roger has been with us for about a month now, but he adjusted to living in a home very quickly and wasn't fearful of all the new household things like most breeder dogs are.

The morning after he arrived Roger tolerated being bathed in the shower and actually fell asleep while the hair dryer was doing its magic. He has a beautiful, thick coat so that took a while! By the third night he let us know he wanted to sleep in the bedroom with everyone else. He was a good boy all night.

As Roger was transitioning to life in a home, he used his kennel as a safe place to relax. He loves plush toys and puts all his 'babies' in the kennel or carries them around the house. He uses the kennel much less now.

Roger is a very calm dog and met our pack easily. He gets along well with everyone and is confident with the whole pack. He does model after them, which is why it's so important that his new family have a medium to large, confident dog for Roger to learn from.

Unfortunately, Roger demonstrated he's a bit of an escape artist. He managed to slide open one of the latches and squirm his way out of the kennel while I was out running an errand. This had to be a fairly traumatic experience for him and he ended up needing some minor medical attention. So, now we use Carabiner clips on the gate to make sure he's safe while we're gone.

Roger is still a work in progress on the house training. After adding some gates to restrict access in the main living area, it's been 10 days since he last marked. He doesn't yet signal when he needs to go outside, but today he rang the dog bell on the door for the first time! Hopefully that will become his signal.

While Roger is anxious on our daily walk, he definitely doesn't want to be left behind. He does pull somewhat but improves when we stop for a minute to let him re-group. His progress on learning how to walk on-leash has been steady so we think he really enjoys his walks. But because he isn’t truly comfortable with being leashed, Roger’s forever home will require a fenced yard for his safety and happiness.

Children in his forever family should be at least 10 years old, as Roger is a big boy who loves attention but isn’t aware of his size, and he is easily frightened by unexpected things and loud noises.

So far, Roger's greatest fear is getting into the car. That said, he has improved each time, so after a few trips to Dairy Queen we expect he may learn to enjoy car rides.

Roger came in remarkably healthy, but he did have a tooth that needed to be extracted during his neuter surgery, which he's currently recovering from. This gentleman is soon ready to go to his new home!

So, what would Roger want? He's a pretty chill dog but likes his daily walk, loves to be petted and get his fair share of attention, but mostly he wants to hang out near his human.
