WOW! What a gorgeous boy Roscoe is! He was a stray in rural Iowa whose time was up. Lucky for Roscoe, a woman with her own rescue told the local impound facility about RAGOM and now he has started his “real” golden life – I don’t want to know where he’d be right now if this wonderful lady hadn’t known about us!
He is believed to be 3 years old and healthy aside from ear mites, 2 ear infections, and something causing his eyes to water – all his medical needs are being treated and he will be healthy as a horse after a couple weeks of TLC and meds. His front teeth, both top and bottom, have been broken off, probably in an effort to get out of a kennel or other enclosure. He is a healthy weight of 88.6 pounds, but he looks MUCH larger (both the vet and I guessed 100-110 pounds, we were happy we were wrong). He will be neutered tomorrow morning if his heartworm test is negative.
I had him groomed yesterday and he was fabulous according to the groomer. She says he has a double coat and thinks he might be a mix of golden and something… something big – take a look at his head and those legs and paws! Having a double coat is a great thing, he doesn’t shed at all! I spent over an hour the 1st evening he was here, brushing him and I didn’t even get one undercoat brush full of hair – I was amazed, yet thrilled. He did meet a young child at the groomers and she said he was fine with her.
Because he was a stray we have no idea if he was a house dog or not, but he came into our home and has been quite the sweetheart. No marking, no inappropriate chewing, no jumping on people. No accidents in the house – unless you consider the ugly Christmas tree that is in the basement that we lovingly refer to as our “marker magnet” – any male dog that lifts its leg, is drawn to this ugly tree and dumb foster mom made the mistake of going to the basement without having him on his tether and didn’t catch him until it was too late – you can’t blame him for that. This morning my husband let him get into bed with him and I thought Roscoe might not ever leave it – he was smiling at me while cuddling with my husband. The one thing he does that needs working on it is the meet and greet of other dogs. I think the neuter will help with that and we will continue to keep him on a leash or tether while he wears a Gentle Leader so we can correct the behavior when it happens. In the 24 hours that we have been working on those behaviors, he has made amazing progress. He is sweet, smart and definitely wants to please! Stay tuned as we get to know him better and find out exactly what he needs in his forever home.
