Roy 08-520

Profile

RAGOM would like to welcome Roy into our fold! This young man was in a high kill shelter in Iowa after being found as a stray. He is estimated to be around 18-months-old and is 63 pounds (I think he's a little skinny and will be working getting him to gain weight).

While Roy has obviously had no training and has been living wild for who knows how long, he loves his people! He wants nothing more than to cuddle up and lay right next to foster mom! He is a great cuddler and loves to give kisses.

He came in and set the tone with the resident goldens. He let them know that he has every right to be here and they have respected that! After a couple hours they have all been getting along just fine. He has been chasing the resident cat but only to find out what that thing is! He lays right next to the him at night and they haven't had any issues.

Since Roy lived as a stray, he has some issues that are going to take some love and patience. He doesn't walk well on a leash. The first time I had him on one, he did the ole crocodile roll and then just laid down. He is starting to get better on our walks as he is taking cues from the resident goldens, but it's still requiring patience. His fur is fairly thin but I believe with good nutrition that will be resolved. He doesn't know any commands and gets so excited that he just jumps straight in the air. We are working on the basics, like sit right now. I figure one step at a time and not too much at once. This guy is very smart and has so much potential, are you willing to find out what that can be?

There are questions as to whether or not he is housebroken, but so far so good here! He is limited to certain areas of the house and hasn't had an accident while I'm at work. He did have an accident right after coming, but that was more my fault for not watching his cues.

Roy is also quite the clown. He likes nothing better than finding odd contortion-like poses on the couch. He is just always up for fun.

Due to Roy's high activity level, the fact that he's had no obedience training and that he is mouthy, I will not adopt him to a home with small children. He would knock over the sturdiest little kid and it just wouldn't be fun for anyone. He has so much love to give, he just needs the right home to grow in.

If you are interested in meeting Roy (and giving him a better name), please contact placementatragom [dot] org.

This is Kennedy (Roy 08-520) He was found in Iowa and sent to a kill shelter. RAGOM rescued this golden boy and we got him in December 2008. He was pretty rough. He had NO manners, was not housebroken, no one had noticed he has one mangled ear 3 inches shorter than the other (in photo you can see the left ear), about 23 bad bite marks on nose, face and eye. He is a dream now in just a few short months. He is a snuggler, no longer a counter surfer, loves to go camping, he walks very well and shares with his doggie sister just fine. He seems a little fearful at times but as long as we are with him he will try anything. Galliano adjusted well to him and now they are always together.

Roy continues to do awesome living the GReat life.  He has really settled in and made himself at home.

He loves going for walks and FM loves taking him for a walk, now that he uses his gentle leader!  He wasn't too happy in the beginning to be using this but now walks like a pro and everyone enjoys their walks!  He also doesn't worry about other dogs when we're walking and is able to focus on FM.

He has learned that if he is calm when FM comes home, he gets a treat.  So now, when walking in the door, he sits and waxes the floor.  We do a lot of NILIF (Nothing in Life is Free) training here so he needs to earn his food, treats and affection and he has just blossomed with this.

His fur has become silky smooth with a good diet and he loves you to feel this!  He would let you pet him for hours if you have the stamina!

Little RoyRoy is looking for a furever home for the holidays!  He would be great to curl up with by the fire and if you don't have one, he can help keep you warm :-)

Please contact placementatragom [dot] org if you'd like to meet or learn more about Roy.  His pictures really don't do him justice, you have to see him to to believe.

Roy has been in foster care for a week now and has done so well! He is the most loyal, loving, eager to please dog I've met in a long time!

He is housebroken and has only had 3 accidents since being here, mostly foster mom's fault for not paying closer attention. He has free roam of the home while FM is at work and has done great! Not bad for a dog where it was unknown if he'd even been IN a house before!

He has learned to walk nicer on a leash, but will benefit from some 1:1 training on this. His foster brothers are good walkers and he is trying very hard to do as they do.

He has learned to sit! Although he is so excited that he waxes the floor with his bum going back and forth. We are now progressing to "gentle" and "no teeth". Since he is essentially still a puppy, he explores everything with his mouth and hasn't quite learned to give kisses without teeth. He doesn't bite, but he just feels his way with his teeth. I'm working on this so if he does it to someone who doesn't know him, it isn't misconstrued as a bite. So, if he gives kisses without teeth we say "good kisses" and if he uses his teeth we say "ouch" and pull away. He does really good with gentle and often given praise. I've been putting peanut butter on my fingers with a treat inside and if he licks gently, he gets the treat.

He is still very excited when FM comes home and can barely contain his excitement. He jumps up in the air and cries... it's pretty cute but he gets a little over-exuberant and could knock someone over coming home. So we're also working on a calmer homecoming.

Roy loves his people! He wants nothing more than to sit by FM on the couch, chair, floor, etc. He sleeps at the head of the bed and sometimes steals his own pillow. The other day he was so excited to get a belly rub that he spurted urine! It was hilarious because I didn't know what was happening at first and then realized there was a urine fountain and quickly took him outside.

Roy would do better not living with another dog. He is great with them after awhile but he is protective of his people and I think he would grow so much on a 1:1 situation. He is good with cats- he has chased but not hurt the resident cat. He has very good recall so doesn't need a fenced yard. Again, he is a little too excitable for younger children but older children who can continue to reinforce positive training would do well. He really just needs repetition and positive reinforcement, as all young dogs do.

He is excited to be able to move on to his furever family and if you think you will be the one, please contact placementatragom [dot] org
