Poirot has been here a couple of days and we have found out a few things about him.  We have trouble pronouncing his name so we just call him "Roy" for short.  He is 12 years old and will be 13 in July.  He has a gray face and his whole coat is gray mixed with reddish gold.  He has been with the same family since he was a puppy and grew up with 2 children.

He was an outside dog so we decided bathing and grooming was priority one.  Even though he was very nervous being at our house, he did great with the grooming.  First thing was to throw away the stinky collar and leash.   Then we got out the clippers and scissors.  Once he found out we were going to get rid of all those nasty mats he was very happy to cooperate.  His ears were pretty much stuck to his head with mats and he could hardly move his tail with the weight of the mats.  We put all the hair in a bag and decided to weigh it- almost a pound!

Next, into the tub for a nice bath. He was nervous about it, but did very well.  It was a lot for the first day in a new home, but we couldn't have him in our room at night with the way he smelled.  He looks and smells much better now. At night we put him in a crate in our room and he does fine- keeps it clean. Sometimes he is nervous about going up stairs so we just put him on a leash and guide him up.  He has a good appetite, but is very thin.

The owner said he has only heard him bark a few times in his life. We weren't sure about house training since he was an outside dog, but so far no accidents.  He is a very happy old guy- never stops wagging his tail.  His owner said he has not been to a vet for a few years.  He is neutered but not up to date on anything else so we will go to the vet in a few days for shots and microchipping.  I did put frontline on him yesterday.

He likes to chase tennis balls, but is not really interested in the other toys I have given him.  He will follow Sunny around sometimes, but often pretty much ignores her.  He is very sweet and loves to be petted.  Rides well in the car and jumps in on his own.  He seems pretty spry for his age and seems to hear and see well.  We will know more after we see the vet.

Updates

Saturday, October 9, 2010

We haven't sent an update for awhile because there really isn't any thing to update. We all have fallen into our routines and live life one day at a time.

I have attached a picture of Poirot aka Roy. You can see the tumor on his left rear continues to grow. It is now the size of a soccer ball and has displaced his tail to the right. There a several other tumors that are forming or growing. One most notable is in his left ear. He eats well and isn't in any pain that we can tell. He even gets out and runs like a puppy at least once a day. Walks are more like smelling trips. He loves to poke along and play detective with his nose. Often when he sleeps at night it is such a deep sleep you have to touch him to wake him. Needless to say he is not our great protector watch dog.
Again, thank you Susan for the sponsorship!

Cold weather and freeze up has arrived. Looking back on the dog that came to us last spring I can't help thinking about him living in a garage in this cold weather in his past life. He now can choose when and if he wants to go outside. Roy is no fan of cold weather. He has been trying to train us to leave the entry door open so he can enjoy the fresh air from the warmth of the heated area. He has gained enough weight so his ribs don't stick out anymore.

His coat needed to be shaved and now has grown back in with a color that adds dignity to this senior citizen. He follows the lead of our dog on how and when to get excited that something is going to happen! Perhaps a car ride or a walk. Walking consists of 10 minutes of walking and 20 minutes of sniffing for dog smells. By the time we get back he is ready for a rest. He is past the time of burning of pent up ambition. A nap by the fire suits him just fine.

He will make some family very lucky.

We want to especially thank his sponsor Susan and the Holiday tokens he has received from the Giloy's and also from the anonymous senior dog lover- it's like he's getting his own fan club!

Dale & Sue Giloy                         Merry Christmas to the Golden seniors

Lori, Kerry, and the Mutts

Roy continues to be a happy lake dog that loves being with people.  No matter what, he has to be in the center of things.  He has been chewing on tennis balls, bones, tug ropes, etc. and it seems to have really helped to clean his teeth.  He loves to remove the fuzz from tennis balls- lucky for us he always spits it out and doesn't swallow it.  With a senior dog we never know how much time we will have with them, but we are going to make sure that the time Roy has with us will be the best time of his life. He is more active than our 8-9 year old Golden and better behaved. We still haven't heard him bark. His tail is constantly wagging and he is always busy doing something so I think he is very happy.  His breathing seems to have improved somewhat- I don't notice the panting like I used to.  He is a great dog and so easy to have around.
