Ruby came into RAGOM from a retired breeder. She seeks out her foster siblings for comfort and support, and will need a confident resident dog in her new home to continue to learn from and help her feel safe. Ruby hasn’t been tested yet with cats. Children should be 10+ since Ruby is scared of quick movements. A physical fence is optional with a solid plan to keep her safe. This sweet girl is looking forward to starting her Golden life with a family who will cherish her forever.

Hello Ruby fans! Foster Mom and Dad want to tell you just how sweet and cuddly this girl is. She is more affectionate than our own goldens! If she goes outside without you, when she comes in she acts as though she hasn't seen you all day.

She is full of so much love! It's fun to watch her run in and jump on the couch in the hopes that she gets the "best spot". The spot where a human can pet her.

So, when Foster Mom croons to dogs, she calls them things like Honey and Sweetie. Because of this, Ruby doesn't answer to that name but she answers to Honey. She must know that she is honey-colored and as sweet as can be.

Ruby-Honey has graduated to sleeping on a dog bed in our bedroom at night. She sleeps better there and, as a result, foster mom sleeps better. She is reliable about whining when she needs to go outside, so we consider her house-trained.

There are some nights, however, when she goes poop at midnight and needs to go out again at 6 a.m. to poop, so she's not ready for her forever family to be gone 8 hours a day. She poops about 6 times a day!

Ruby is pretty good at "sit". Her counter-surfing is slowing down but we still try to keep everything at the back of the counter.

Her shoe and sock stealing is slowing down also but, if you are missing one, just look on the dog bed. She hasn't been chewing them, just carrying them about. She's a puppy and is still learning what's acceptable. We use baby gates to contain her in a safe area when we aren't able to watch her. It's a good idea to "puppy proof" an area so you don't lose valuable items.

After breakfast Ruby will play and wrestle with our 1 year-old golden for a couple hours until we are ready to go for our walk. COVID-19 hasn't slowed down our walking at all. We typically walk 2.5 - 3 miles every morning at nearby parks.

Ruby now loves the car! Our evening walks vary but are frequently just around the neighborhood. Ruby has gotten used to vehicles passing us and doesn't show much concern. Now that the weather is nice, we are seeing lots more joggers, bicycles, scooters, etc. These things still scare her but she has her safe space near her pack. I'm sure the more she is exposed to these things the more comfortable she will become.

Ruby loves all dogs and people that we encounter so she is easy to have out and about except she wants to pull you towards all of them.

To summarize, Ruby-Honey would like a family that loves to pet her and will train her to be the best companion she can be. She has so much love and so much potential. To us, she is the perfect puppy, ready to be taught how to be the perfect dog.

Foster Mom, can I come in?

Wednesday, March 18, 2020

Hello Ruby fans! Just wanted to let you know that Ruby got a clean bill of health and was spayed on March 17th. She's recovering very nicely.

This little cuddlebug will be someone's constant companion. I can't say enough about how sweet and lovable Ruby is. Plus, she is super soft, so is a great couch companion. Ruby has learned to whine, bark or paw at the door when she wants to go out. We've been accident free for over a week now!

Ruby is a sweet, cuddly, puppy. She loves snuggling on the couch with her humans and curling up on the couch for naps. She will follow her humans everywhere! Ruby's fur is super soft and luxurious. She loves to be petted. Her ideal forever family will allow her to cuddle on the couch with them.

Ruby came from a breeder who was getting out of the business and has had very little exposure in the first six months of her life. As such, she is afraid of new things. She is now learning just how fun life can be!

Ruby really looks to the resident dogs for cues for how to act and she seeks them out for comfort when she is scared. Her ideal forever home would have a calm, confident dog. Her foster siblings are aged 1 and 6. Sometimes Ruby thinks the 1 year-old plays too rough, but she will play tug and bitey face, she just isn't fond of wrestling.

Ruby is not yet house-broken, but she has a large bladder, so she doesn't need quite as frequent trips outside as a young puppy normally does.

Ruby will benefit greatly from a structured training class, but maybe not right away. She needs to learn that she is safe at home before she can feel safe out and about. She still has times in the house where she acts afraid of foster mom and dad.

Ruby loves toys, balls and bones and will chew on other things, like furniture! She is a puppy! Ruby is tall enough to counter-surf (so far she has gotten paper, napkin, gloves and a hat - she only chewed the paper products).

One day she changed the channel on the TV and hid the remote. Ruby is starting to learn which items she needs to leave alone, but will take constant monitoring initially.

Here are highlights of the progress Ruby has made in the first week in her foster home.

  • Health - Ruby was treated for round worms and ear infections.
  • Treats - Ruby finally learned to take treats from our hands.
  • Pottying - After she potties outside she will run to us for a treat instead of running away from us.
  • Doorways - Ruby still seems nervous coming through the doorways into or out of the house. It really helps when she's following our resident dog(s).
  • Walks - Ruby has been going for walks with the whole pack. She is still nervous at times but is more relaxed when we drive to a park that doesn't have cars near the path. When nervous she will go next to or between our legs or she will go underneath our tallest dog. Fortunately, he doesn't mind.
  • Vehicles - Ruby doesn't shake anymore when riding in the backseat with our 2 resident dogs. She doesn't like getting in the car, although she climbed in by herself at the park, after our walk yesterday! She has gotten out of the car by herself for 3 days in a row! Woo hoo! It seems to help if the car isn't in the garage since the tight confines of the garage can be scary.
  • Vehicles passing by when we are walking is a different story. She still is quite afraid and sometimes tries to flee. If I see the car approaching, I try to put myself between her and the car, have her close to my legs and pet her. I'm hoping this makes her feel safe and will show her that nothing bad happens when that car goes by.

Ruby is looking for a family to give her the time and patience she needs to become "the best dog ever".
