Yesterday I brought our buddy Rudy to the vet for the last time. He is now in spirit.
Almost a year ago we brought him to the U of M because of breathing problems and he was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma. They had to drain blood out of the pericardium sac around the heart and it should have filled back up within a week. If we had the sac removed (open heart surgery), he was given maybe 5 months to live after that. It never filled up, and he has been a wonderful happy, playful, silly Golden Retriever for almost a year. We have truly cherished each and every day.
A week ago Monday I brought him back to our vet because he was breathing hard and his belly was distended. The doctor drained fluid off his belly to make him more comfortable until test results came back. His cancer came back. He had a good last week with lots of car rides, he kept me safe from those vicious cows in the pasture with big barks as we drove by, LOTS of treats, lots of petting & kisses and he was able to woooooo woooo wooooo and even hump the dog beds :)
Every dog is special, but some are just a bit more special and Rudy was one of those. He would bark at any animal on TV - we got him so he would just growl or wooo at them - much easier on the ears. He was happy to see everyone that walked in the door, he was kind to every dog and cat he met. He had the absolutely cutest face and expression any dog could have. He loved laying in the bathroom and only a trip to the treat jar could get him to move. His wooooooing was absolutely the best. You could put one popcorn kernel in your mouth and he would come running, no matter how hard he was sleeping and from anywhere in the house. One look at Rudy and happiness would be all you could think of. He was a pure delight to have shared our life with for the last 1 1/2 years. I wish we could have had him his entire 9 years plus many more. I think we have the record for adoption - Nancy P. brought him to us in the morning, and we asked RAGOM if we could adopt him instead of fostering him by that evening. It was love at first sight. We both miss him so much. There are 9 other dogs that share our life, but it doesn't make it any easier when you lose one.
I thank Dr. Weinke and Diane for being so wonderful and caring in his last days.
Rudy, we miss you.
