Rusty 09-217

Profile

Rusty is a 6 year old boy, he is not UTD on shots but will be in a few weeks.  Rusty has had a whirl wind experience with RAGOM so far.  RAGOM received a call on Saturday for us to pick up Rusty because he had an open wound in his chest and a mass on his front Ankle - both are seeping wounds.  RAGOM got Rusty to the emergency room on Saturday and on Sunday he was brought to our local vet for care.  On Monday Rusty had major surgery to clean out the wound in his cheast (picture included) and to take the absese off of the ankle.

I can not tell you a lot about him yet, but I wanted to get him out on the website and tell you how nice of a boy he is.  Rusty met all three resident dogs without a problem and now he is fast to sleep in his kennel.  I can not wait to get to know him more tomorrow!

Our big “tank” is coming along well as you can see by the photos. What a great time to roll on the grass with that darn T-shirt on!  Rusty is a happy guy; and is handling all the touching, bandage changes, prodding, etc. very well.  He still needs to be calmed and rubbed/distracted during cleaning a some stitch removal but who wouldn’t?.  We will ALL be happy when we get to the point of no sutures or t-shirts!  Through all this he has been such a good boy and so forgiving.  It is so amazing how dogs are that way: no bad thoughts about where he came from, just live in the ‘now’ and move on and enjoy every day as it comes.  We can sure learn for them.

He is obviously a hoot to watch.  Let’s have a good roll out in the yard, or just sit there and look handsome!  Rusty will be ever so happy when we can go for a long walk and rides in the truck!  He just loves life, people, and being near a family.  That is all that matters.  He is a very agile gent, who despite size and sutures has no problem ‘wanting’ to get up and sleep on the bed or my chaise lounge.  Here that is off limits (just too hard with so many fosters), but boy, if his new home would allow it, he would be forever content and happy! Rusty will make a great BIG love bug for the right family.  He would love to snuggle and just hang out a comfortable couch, chair or bed, if allowed to and yes, on the floor or doggie bed by you too.  Again he is great with the cats.

Ahh...... to be a big golden dog who’s by a great human(s).  Snuggle, sleep, lick, love.......it just doesn’t get better than that.  He loves people and to just be a part of the family!  What a huge, yes huge, lover.  He gives kisses too.  Rusty is such a great boy. He’s so beautiful, and is making great strides in rescue. He’s a gentle giant for a golden home.We love having him.

Rusty is doing great and healing very well.  He should be able to be adopted in 2-3 weeks time now. Rusty is great with our 3 cats (and 3 resident dogs).  He enjoys the outside.  He has a deep bark when letting the world know he is outside, mostly to all the neighboring dogs (who unfortunately bark a lot).  His drain tubes are out and stitches will come out next week.  He is, of course, on a ‘diet’; and I look forward to taking him for walks.  He loves people and LOVES to go in the car (we have to be slow about that yet of course).  Rusty is a true RESCUE golden.  The surrendering owner did not provide medical vet care immediately. Then his issues escalated to serious and the SO could not afford it.  However, the good part is: there is Ragom and wonderful rescue workers who, in a very, very short time, rescued this great big boy and got him the emergency vet care he needed.

Rusty is only 6, and is a great dog.  Yep, he is a biggy; but nothing good food in limited normal portions and in time, exercising/walking, cannot fix.  He is feeling so good now and poor guy really wants to go on walks and go for rides.  Another few days and we should begin the walking (slowly of course).  Rusty is fine with free roam of the home.  He will still go back to the large bathroom where he sleeps at night and rest (his ‘spot” I guess).  Rusty is a very friendly big boy who wants that golden attention, and just be loved.  He is so beautiful.  With 20-30 pounds less, he is going to be one stunning golden retriever! Rusty does not beg while we are eating (amazing enough).  He is taking treats nicer all the time.  In the beginning he was ‘grabby-mouthy’ and I think that was perhaps due to the shear LOVE of FOOD---and getting it.  Now, he gets low-cal treats/chicken, etc. and yes, he does know sit and lay down commands also.  He is learning ‘be nice’ for the gentle mouth and he has that down pretty well.  I think obviously everything before revolved around food and that was it.  Now he is learning manners, and has a schedule.

Soon there will be photos WITHOUT a T-shirt, but we are being very safe with the area and careful regarding infections, etc. until the stitches come out.  There is little to no oozing now either.  Rusty is still on one antibiotic 3X a day and should be done with that next weekend.  He is off all the rest of the meds he came with.  He is eating Cheerios and  green beans and rice with this diet food and really enjoys it.  We just alternate them.  His teeth are good as is his coat.  He is fine with being brushed, but it’s sort of awkward yet with the T-shirt and shaved spots.  His ears are really cleared up now too.  If you are looking for a wonderful, beautiful, rescued golden retriever, he is the boy for you.  Please contact placementatragom [dot] org if you are interested in Rusty boy. What a loveable hunk!

Here is Mr. Big, Rusty boy. He is coming along very well as you can see.  Rusty is a very sweet dog and is handling all the medicals he is going through quite well.  Isn’t he just about as handsome as they come?

(1)   Rusty came with a ear infection and yucky ears.  He is not crazy about getting his ear drops in (probably never ever had drops before of course) so we just go slow.  Once they are in and I rub them. It's a sense a relief from him.  I am sure they are still quite sensitive and sore.  I wipe them out good with a cotton ball with cleanser on them.  I think once this is done there is relief.

(2)   Rusty’s coat is not too bad (that is not shaved!), and his tail is quite thin. But it sure does not affect his wagging abilities!  He is a happy camper and loves to wag that skinny tail (which I assume also had an old injury) and swing that butt.  He does not mind being brushed, but at this point a little hard to tell due to everything else going on with t-shirt and bandages.  Once stitches out etc., we will give him a nice bath and good groom job.

(3)   Rusty came with a growth on the back of his foot (left front leg right above his ‘wrist”).  This was taken off (and are very much hoping all of it) and sewn shut.  A biopsy is being run.  He is great at leaving it alone.  This is a very difficult part, as we know, to keep dogs from licking.  Rusty seems to listen to “no don’t lick” and just goes about his business.  So that is huge.  These stitches, along with the ones in his chest, will be able to come out next week.  That will be great for both of us.  The site looks really good.  Of course there are some shaved spots on front legs from IV’s etc which need to grow back too.  But will heal up fine. More on the biopsy at a later time.

(4)   Rusty obviously came with a large wound to his chest; we are not positive what exactly happened and at this point does not matter.  He had a hole in this massive sized chest which got infected and surgery needed to be done right away.  He has a pretty good sized incision and a couple smaller ones where the drain tubes have been placed as you can see above.  From this surgery there was a lot of swelling inside, due to infection and so much weight of the dog.  Hence the beautiful T-shirt which he wears in order to keep him from ‘grabbing’ the tubes out (I think they just bother, they do not hurt) and from itching from being shaved and stitches drying up and healing, letting these tubes ‘ooze’ the infection out and keeping it as clean as we can. The ooze part is 150% better.  The swelling is really going down so all of the drugs this guy is on must be doing their job(s).  Again, stitches out next week and all the hair will grow back in.  Then we will be T-shirt free.  Rusty is handling the changing of the T-shirts and gauze (underneath to soak like a pad) pretty darn good.  Again, the site looks good.

(5)   Rusty is current on all his vaccinations, and needs a booster distemper in a couple weeks. He has also been microchipped, so all of that is done.  His nails have also been trimmed up. Again, doing great.

So, here is a totally beautiful 6 year old golden boy, who thank goodness is in rescue and is going to make a wonderful companion dog.  Rusty LOVES his butt being pet; and like goldens, any attention you will spare is greatly appreciated.  He will lay by you, and I think would really like to get up on a couch or chair or perhaps a bed (not allowed here).  However, he is listening to “off” and “no” quite well.  He will lay and watch you in the kitchen as I am positive there were many a ‘table scrap’ in his prior years.  I have tried fruit but unfortunately, nothing trips his appetite yet.  He does like green beans though.  He is currently getting fed 2X a day, 2 cups or so each time.  He is of course, on a light, senior food (good food-Nutri Source and Bill Jack mixed); he is learning to take treats very gently.  I think before when he was a little ‘mouthy’ was strictly due to hunger and did not want to risk losing some morsels.  Rusty is a wonderful boy to foster.

I cannot wait until stitches are out and we can go for walks and burn off that fat and have new things to see and smell.  So I cannot offer any news much in that way at this time as far as how he walks.  We too, will limit car rides, which I DO KNOW he does really enjoy, due to current medicals now also. So all in all, considering everything this poor dog has been through in pain, emotional, confusion, weight, etc., he is awesome.  Just imagine this ‘tank’ about 25-30# lighter.  He is gorgeous. and.....a super personality to go with.  What a trooper dog.

He is babygated in a large master bathroom in the evenings with water and bed/blanket plus some cool tiles, and not a peep all night.  He sleeps about 7-8 hours; just right!  He is fine around our crew.  He enjoys other dogs (even the neighbor ones who bark all the time) and seems to ignore the cats.  Of course, he is housetrained perfectly.  He will go stand by door if he needs out.  He drinks a fair amount of water now due to all the meds he is on.  He really likes the fenced in back yard to scope out as well.

This is one great Ragom golden boy!

This is Rusty, the T-shirt guy. How handsome is that?  Rusty has come to us in Sioux Falls with some medicals, but so far this brute/tank is doing just fine.  What a beautiful golden.  Yes, please look past the T-shirt and weight, and wow, beautiful boy.  Rusty will be a 'work-in-progress for a couple weeks while we get our wounds healed and on the road to recovery.

Rusty is a tough gentle guy who, in time and vetting, will be fine.  Rusty totally LOVES attention, food, and just being with all of us. He will get a proper diet, medication, (in time of course, exercise), and 'golden loving', something this dog has never had.

He is beginning to 'heal' already, that is what most important now.  Rusty is currently in a foster home with 3 resident dogs and 3 cats, a home with a fenced yard, and lots of medical and emotional attention.  From the very short time we have had him in fostercare, we do sit and lay down and 'wait'.

A good boy! More to come.....a very nice big boy.  Rusty is micochipped and UTD.

What a sweet dog Rusty is.  We had a pretty rough night but that was just because he could not get comfortable with this big cone on his head.  So we ditched the crate and I made a big boxed in area that he could get sprawled out in and that did the trick.  He was out at 11:00.  I got up at 4:30 this morning to get ready for work and of course he was NOT even thinking about getting up.  So I got ready and than went to get the three resident dogs, once he heard them get up he was ready.  Well at least his mind may have been ready, but his legs were not.  Rusty has a really hard time getting up on his own.  I know really well how to help dogs get up since we lost our Newfoundland last year and we had been helping her get up for years.

So I got Rusty up and stable on his feet and off he went dripping yucky stuff from his chest tube all down the hallway way, kitchen, living room, mud room and every other place.  Everyone went outside to potty and check out the sights of the back yard.  Rusty took a quick SLOW stroll and came right back up - he had enough of that walking thing.  He wanted in so he could get comfortable again.  But I took this opportunity to get him fed since all the other dogs were outside.  He at a SMALL breakfast in his mind, took his meds like a good boy and than went wondering around looking for more food making sure to drip all that icky stuff coming from the chest tube all over the floor.  Break out the swifter for the 5th time this morning - do a quick follow the trail of blood and clean up.

6:00 am this morning and hubby gets up and moving to take over so I am off to work - give everyone a dog cookie and kisses (not hubby, he does not like dog cookies) and out the door I go.

Rusty went back to his safe area in the back bedroom when hubby went to work and he did wonderful.  He was sound asleep when I walked into the bed room.  He was ready to get up, but he was more ready for a nice long drink and this stupid cone off my head.  Little did he realize that meant I got to clean his ears and put more meds in them.  Next we went for a stroll around the back yard and he was ready for a nap.  Um nope - you are staying up for a while and working off some of those calories.  Rusty weighed in at 107 - about 30 pounds to heavy!

However even before we could think about losing some weight this poor boy has got to be cleaned up.  He has blood, goop, dirt and everything else all over.  He needs to get wiped down.  So out came the baby wipes - I hope I remember the before and after pictures with any luck he looks a little better!

So Rusty is doing great in a nut shell.  He is the most laid back and easy going guy I have ever met.  He is a true golden!  Oh but he does counter surf if you let him, I have no idea how he thinks those back legs will hold him since he can not get up on his own, but he does.

Rusty is going to be looking for his forever family so if you are looking for the love of your life and willing to wait a few weeks until he is healed, talk to placement!
