Sadie, our dog with experience, has made herself at home!
She met my not-a-dog-family family over the weekend and they were all very impressed with her. Their question to me was: you'll keep this one, won’t you? Obviously, Sadie is not 100% golden; speculation is that her other half could be border collie, some sort of huskie, or ??? (My money’s on the collie-part.)
She respects baby gates, doesn't eat the cat food or the cat-box crunchies and she loves loves loves to be petted. Here is more of what I’ve learned about Sadie:
: ) she loves her people: young, old, sitting, standing, she loves us all!
: ) she can be trusted with everything in my home (possessions, shoes, carpets, cats) all day and all night; she is alone in the house from 6:30am to 4:00pm
: ) no toy budget needed, she's not big on toys
: ) she loves her walks and sits right down to wait patiently for the leash or gentle leader
: ) she is SMART: just for fun I tried teaching her hand signals for “stay” & “come” and she already knew them! I believe she could learn any trick you wanted to teach her
: ) she gets along great with the cats and would love to play with them - they can’t be bothered.
In the spirit of full disclosure:
: ( I believe Sadie may have been mis-treated in the past. SO was very proud to have adopted Sadie from the Humane Society, so her history from birth to age 18 months is unknown.
: ( she has selective hearing when she’s on a scent trail. While walking or at the dog park, if her nose is ‘on a mission’ she is completely distracted - a tug brings her back, but if she was off-leash and saw a squirrel in the distance, the chase would be on!
: ( she loves to go ‘with’ but she never completely relaxes in the car…she doesn’t pace, but she does pant.
