Profile

We would like to welcome Miss Sadie Sue to the Ragom family. She is a 7 year old pure bred golden retriever. She arrived on Saturday after making the long trip from South Dakota. Many thanks to her surrendering owner for bringing her to the cities and to Karen for delivering her to my home safe and sound.

She has been adjusting slowly but surely. It took a bit to get our pottying schedule down but I do know that she can hold her urine for a very long time. WOW!! At least 18 hours. I could not believe it. She is now more on schedule as I do not have a fence so my dogs have to get used to going out on leash. She was accustomed to this but I forgot that she is a big girl with a very big bladder.

She had a bath on Sunday and was perfect throughout the whole ordeal. Did not mind her toes trimmed or nails clipped. She went to the vet on Monday. She weighs a whopping 103 pounds and needs to drop at least 25 to 30 pounds. She is eating a little less now but she clearly has weight to fall back on so I am not worried. She was fed table scraps at her previous home so we are working very hard on not giving her anything but dog food. She also has a very bad habit of her head very close to your dinner plate when you eat. We are working on this also. She gets a little frustrated but she is learning. She got a clean bill of health with the exception of an ear infection. We are treating that now. She is also heartworm negative. YAY!!!!!!!

She has a perfect personality. So darn cute. If you are interested in her and committed to taking her weight off, please let your placement advisor know. She is a doll and I do not expect that she will be around long. I am still trying to determine what her perfect home would consist of but if you are interested, I certainly would be willing to discuss her with you.

It is with a broken heart we share that our sweet Sadie passed away on December 5, 2011.

We became Sadie’s forever family on April 3, 2010 and it was one of the happiest days of our lives! We picked her up from her foster home on a Saturday morning, a morning filled with joy and tears as Sadie and her foster mom, Cindy, had a very special bond. Below is a picture of that very special day!

Sadie’s adventure with us was a short, but oh-so-sweet 20 months. During her time with Cindy and us, Sadie learned what it was to be a Golden Girl- a life without a worry! We promised her she would never have another worry in the world and I hope she felt that way too. Every day with her was pure joy and love. She showered us with unconditional love, hugs and a nuzzle of her nose anytime the petting stopped. Sadie was a perfect “little” sister to her fur-sister, Trixie, who at 20 pounds made Sadie feel like the little one!

Sadie loved to roam in the yard looking for squirrels to catch, de-stuff toys, spend time at the lake fishing and swimming, hang-out with friends (see her favorites below) come with mom to the nursing home and of course, COUNTER SURF!

Sadie’s last days here were spent on home hospice from Dr. Karen Randall of Solace Veterinary and were captured on film by Sarah Beth Photography. Sadie relaxed on her bed while all of her favorite friends said their goodbyes and on Sunday we gave her a little help to become the angel we knew she was. Our sweet girl, we are honored that you chose us to be with the last years of your life. We loved you like our child and will forever cherish the memories we had together. We never imagined our time would be so short and never imagined we could love a dog so much! Your entry into our lives changed us forever and your exit broke our hearts but we are so thankful for every minute we had with you. Your gentle soul and sweetness have inspired everyone you met. We promise we will help as many dogs as we can… in your beautiful memory!

Love, Erin, Kevin and Trixie H.

I wanted to drop you a quick email to say hello and let you know that Sadie is doing great! We have had her for one month today, in some ways it feels like she has been with us forever! I was out of town most of this week for work so Kevin and the girls were home alone all week. Kevin has been teaching Sadie some new things. He is teaching her to sit in front of a treat until he says "go" and then she gets it. He is teaching her how to "drop" when she retrieves and how to "back up" ,she is doing just great. I am thinking of visiting a nursing home with her here in the next few weeks.

When I got back from my trip she looked so much smaller to me. I cannot wait to weigh her this week. She is getting a lot more playful since she is losing so much weight and loves running outside and chasing her new duck! She carries that duck around all over and even sleeps with it next to her.

She was very excited to see me when I got home and we have had fun playing this weekend. Thank you again for taking such good care of her, she is doing so well and we love her so much!

My Dear Sadie Sue,

You really did hit it big when you were chosen to become of a member of the H family. You were so much fun to foster and each day brought out more and more of your personality. I really do miss you girl. I certainly could have kept you. But you have a super Mom and Dad, a sweet canine sister who also was rescued and an awesome fenced in yard. Perfect for all that squirrel and bunny watching. A set of grandparents who have a lake home up north. Can’t wait to hear if you swim. I am so anxious to see you again.

Many people ask how we can foster. Bring them into our home, love them and let them go? Well the H family is a perfect example of how we can do this. Their animals are treated as members of their family. They will never lack for attention or love. I feel extremely blessed to have found such perfect families for all my fosters. I love to get their updates and am extremely excited to see them again. My families are perfect!

Sadie, Clohe and Foster Mom

Here is a note that Sadie sent to Clohe, her canine foster sister:

Sadie and Clohe

Hey Clohe-

Things are going very well! I do miss you and Cindy a lot though!

I met another "Chloe" last night. My new grandparents came over to meet me for Easter with their two tiny dogs, one whose name is Chloe. She really loved me and she reminds me of you...very small and pampered :-) We all ran around the backyard all afternoon while my dad and uncles played baseball in the backyard. I kept thinking the ball was mine, so sometimes I got to play with it! They like to try to carry around my huge toys...silly mini dogs.

Trixie seems to always be following my new mom around so I mainly follow my new dad around all the time. I love laying in the front living room looking out the window for things. My mom said I get that "crazy look in my eye" when the squirrels and bunnies come by. Lucky I am inside!! I also like sitting downstairs with my new family and have a favorite place between the table and the couch that I can sit in and get petted all the time.

Today I am relaxing at home with my dad and Trixie waiting for some new furniture to be delivered. That Trixie girl woke me up again this morning with her running around and playing. Didn't she know it was only 6:45???

See you in July~

Sadie the Lady

Good luck Sadie my Lady. I cannot wait to see you again.

Hey everyone, Sadie Sue here.

What a yucky day. But along with spring comes rain. I was hoping that would hold off this year. You know I have that new pink raincoat. And LOOK!!!! A hat to match. OH NO!!! Clohe says: Stylish at best. FM says I am so beautiful. FD just rolls his eyes. Oh well!

We ran some errands today and one was to stop at the vet and get weighed. Positive results. FM was just beaming! I have lost 11 pounds. WOW! I rarely beg at the dinner table now and people have noticed I do have a waistline. J

I much prefer to watch the squirrels and bunnies at the windows than beg at the table. I might have learned finally that I am not going to get anything.

Well have to go. Just a quick update before my final tomorrow. It’s going to be a sad day for some people around here tomorrow. Lots of tears I think.

Happy Day,
Sadie Sue

Spring really has sprung. What a gorgeous few days we have had. Sadie Sue checking in. Well, things have not been dull around here. This is my last week in foster care. On Saturday I will go to my new home. I will have a Cool Mom and Dad and a friend named Trixie. Pray for no rain because you know they bought me that pink raincoat for my rainy spring time walks. Rumor has it my new Dad picked that out. Clohe says to go for it. She has a whole wardrobe. J Foster Mom is going to miss me but I promise to write and even send a picture or two.

Remember how I told you how much I love to sit and watch the bunnies and squirrels in the back yard? Well here in Eagan we live on a wooded lot and there are a lot of critters so it really makes the day go by quickly just watching them and their antics. I literally spend hours watching them. Well on one of my potty breaks out in the yard this weekend, I met one face to face. I just stood there and watched him (I was on a leash with FM) and he just kept coming closer and closer. FM was in shock and could not believe that he kept moving forward instead of running away. How dumb was he? Well when he was about 2 ft. away, I lunged and got him. Try as hard as FM could, she was unable to pull hard enough to keep me back. I looked at her with the squirrel in my mouth and if only I would have had the camera this time. Truly a Kodak moment. She asked me to drop, (screamed at me to drop) and finally FD came out to see what the action was. Well he had the bright idea to go get me a treat and we made a trade. I used to hunt in my younger days and I really do have a gentle mouth. Not a good outing for FM though. My new Mom gave me a thumbs up. I guess she has a lot of rabbits that eat her flowers. She’s going to let them know that Sadie Sue is moving in and they better move on. I really do have a good gig, don’t I?

Paws crossed I get another one!

Well today Clohe and I went to the drive up treat store. Ever been there? FM calls it the bank but Clohe and I both agree it is the best store ever. We received extra special treatment today and lo and behold 2 BIG treats each. YAY! We never even had to get out of the car. I think FM might have paid for them!

Time to sign off. American Idol is on and I can only type during commercials. J

Thanks for reading up on me.

Love,
Sadie Sue

Happy Happy… Sadie Sue here. Life is so good for me. I am enjoying the nicer weather, my ears are really looking great and feeling good and those squirrels and bunnies are so active. A lot to watch out the window while FM is at work. I love to lie by the patio door and take in all their activities. I have to tell you there is this certain bunny that really pushes my button. He comes right up the step to the patio door and I absolutely go crazy. How unfair is that? If I could only get at him…….. that puddin head!

Soon, I will be moving to my new home. They are all ready for me. A super trip to the pet store landed me a new bed, a new PINK collar and leash, a tag with my name and phone number, new toys, and a new PINK raincoat for our spring walks. I have to think about that one. Won’t PINK make me look even larger? J FM said I am going to look so beautiful and need my walks to take this excess weight off. What a drag. Not the walks. Just the weight. I have to tell you though that I had my first counter surfing incident over the weekend and powdered sugar donuts are the best! I did it right in front of FM too. She told me no, but I know that she was snickering to herself and understood my need for that little sweet. I should have grabbed 2! I am getting better at the dinner table when the family eats but it is a struggle. Every night I need to be reminded to back up.

Time to check on that darn bunny.

I hope you stay tuned to my adventures later in the week

Love,
Sadie Sue

I guess when you stalk too many
bunnies you start to look like them

Those darn squirrels

Caught again! Who cares? FM went to work so late today that I just could not wait to get in my spot.

WOW!! Those holidays are so tough on a girl. Happy St Patty’s Day. Sadie Sue McClanahan here. I again am doing my own update. Things have been so busy here and when I say I too am busy, you know it is busy. What does FM do with her time?

Just want to update you a bit. I still am on that diet. Seems like forever. The first check in I lost 3 ½ pounds. When I checked in this week I had lost a total of 2 ½ pounds. WHAT??????? That cannot even be. I have not had anything other than my 1 ½ cups of dog food since I got here. A little peanut butter with my pills and lots of water. I LOVE water and ya know what? I bet it is water weight. J That’s it. I’ll have to make sure I mention this to FM. By the way, I am a very neat drinker. No dribbles, no messy floor.

At the vet I was changed over to a different oral medication for my ears. It too is an antihistamine but does not have the same affect on me as Benadryl. I did a lot of panting with the increased dose of Benadryl and that of course increased my water intake. We know where that additional pound came from! We are hoping to get a handle on this and moving forward it will not be an issue because I am on a good food with limited ingredients. Still had to express my anal sacs but that too could be allergy related.

My bad habit of being overly eager when you are eating dinner at the table, remains the same. (Did I say that?) I still think that I might get a scrap or two even though it has been weeks and I haven’t. I know that my foster family is really hoping that someday soon I will understand that I am getting nothing.

Foster Mom came home early one day this week to go to the doctor (unbeknownst to me) and walked in and could not find me anywhere. Imagine her surprise (and mine!) when I was sacked out on the loveseat sawing logs. I never even heard her come home. She laughed a lot and she assumes that this is the place I spend most of my day. I guess she will never know unless she wants to hang out with me.

Well time to go. I’m sure you are all wondering how my meet and greet went with Trixie. Well, you are going to have to check back. Time to go outside and make sure the yard is free of squirrels and bunnies for the night. Stay tuned. More to come.

lassie Sadie Sue

Happy St Patty’s Day

What a doo

Before the party

After the party

Clohe and I - ready to celebrate

Friday, March 19, 2010

Hey……. Sadie Sue McClanhan here. I sure am glad St Patty’s day is over. Time to get back to controlling the squirrels and the bunnies in this cul-de-sac. Just today there were 2 geese across the street. Really... they must be newcomers. Only dogs are allowed in this neighborhood. Soon FM is going to have to hire a pest service. I will no longer be able to fulfill my duties as I have found my forever home! I will have a friend named Trixie (who is also a rescue dog) and a Mom and Dad who already love me to pieces. Trixie too has allergies, anal sac issues, and eats special food. I will fit right in. Foster Mom says she may even cook us our food. Now yum yum! If I could just talk her into setting me a place at the dinner table. You know I am working really hard on my dinner manners.

I will have a nice fenced in yard and I have promised my new Mom to keep it bunny free. She loves to garden and we know what those bunnies do to anything green.

My new Mom would like me to be a therapy dog. I could go to work with her and how cool is that? Then there are days where my Dad works from home. Wow! And Grandma has a home up north on a lake. Car rides? Is there anything better? Seriously, I do have the luck o’ the Irish.

Remember this and you too may get lucky:

May your thoughts be as glad as the shamrocks
May your heart be as light as a song
May each day bring you bright, happy hours
That stay with you all the year long.

Clohe and I will hang out for a couple more weeks. My new house is under construction and everyone thinks it is best if I stay here until it is finished. That’s ok. I love it here too.

Thank you Ragom for making all this possible.
Sadie Sue

My new Mom!

My new Dad!

Saturday, March 13, 2010

Good morning. It’s Sadie Sue. Today is my BIG morning. I meet Miss Trixie and her family and hopefully she will like me and I will live there. If not, FM said I can stay here forever. I did meet a couple people this week that thought I would make a great addition to their home. FM and I went to a friend's house this week and had Chinese food. (Guess who did not have any food? L) It smelled good and boy what I would have given to have just a bite. But no! That darn diet. We did play a cool game of hide and seek. FM calls it Nut Time where I run around and come back to you and you jump out and say BOO. Boy was I tired when we were done. I then had a nice massage and good brushing and when I left, I was told I could come back whenever I wanted. And to let her know if it didn’t work out with Miss Trixie. Hmm… It’s nice to have your paw in the door. J

Yesterday the Direct TV man was here for hours reinstalling cable. Clohe and I did our best to help him. He wanted to know my story and I think I might have touched his heart also. FM thinks that is why he was here so long. Add in that Clohe and I are not experienced yet with that kind of work and I guess everything takes longer.

So off to get ready to meet Miss Trixie and attend a Ragom meeting. I will love that and FM is very happy to show me off.

I LOVE this soccer ball.

You coming???

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

Hey everyone, Sadie Sue here. Well I know that you must be really anxious to hear about my weight loss. Well I did lose 3 ½ pounds which Dr. Larry thought was great. But let me tell you how hard that was. Now that I have settled in, I really enjoy my meals. Absolutely no people food for me and we are working really hard at teaching me good manners when FM and FD eat. I get as close as possible to them until I am reminded that I need to back up. Such a temptation. That food smells so good and how can I critique FM’s cooking if I am never given a bite? J I have mentioned this many times but so far not a morsel.

I had a blood test to make sure my thyroid is in range and it was. Darn!!! I was hoping maybe I could take a pill that would help me shed some of these pounds. FM tells me less pills are better and when the weather gets nicer it will take no time to shed these pounds. I do take Benadryl 3 times a day (in peanut butter) YUM YUM and that seems to have helped my itching a bit.

Breaking news: I am meeting a family on Saturday. They have a little senior rescue named Trixie and she is their pride and joy. It would be kind of like living with Clohe. She too is a princess and her and I get along great. Stay tuned. I will let you know how it goes. Wish me luck!

Sadie Sue

Happy, happy girl

Hmmmm…..
I wonder if I could be labeled a hoarder???

Monday, March 8, 2010

Spring has sprung. Sadie Sue here. I thought it was time to do my own update. Foster Mom is busy, busy folding laundry. I told her I would take over. I have settled in so nicely here. I am used to living here now and feel very comfortable when they come and go. I would love to go with in the car but I realize that I cannot go everywhere. They leave in the morning and always tell me they will be back. I wait nicely and am very excited when they do come home.

My ears are terribly infected. Foster mom thinks that they are allergy related. My anal sacs were full also when I arrived which is another symptom of allergies. So we are treating my ears but we also went and got me some new food. We are trying to determine what I am allergic to. I am now eating venison and sweet potato kibble. I love it a lot and I even get a little tablespoon of the canned food on top of the kibble. Just like whip cream on a sundae! J We’ll see if this has any impact on my ears. Foster Mom hopes so but time will tell.

I no longer am allowed any people food. I have worked really hard at not begging at the table. It is getting better and foster Mom and Dad are very proud of my progress. After dinner every night if I am good, I get a treat and then get brushed while we watch television. I love that!

We will be going this week to get weighed. Foster Mom has high hopes for me. We have walked a couple times but it is so muddy out that it is quite the ordeal to get cleaned up when we get home. I still love it and am doing very well on the gentle leader.

Stay tuned. I hope I have good news to report after weighing in.
