Sadie Mae 07-340

Profile

5/26/07: We picked up Sadie Mae yesterday from Iowa (thanks Bob B for taking the difficult half of the transport) and I must say that Sadie is by far the best road-trip dog I have seen.  She just went in the back and played a little bit with my resident dog and then laid down.Last night we went to the dog park to burn off some steam and get some exercise after being in the car for over 6 hours and she did great.  She met many different dogs and people and was wonderful with all of them.  I have two little girls (4 & 7) and they already love her and she is so good with both of them.  My resident Golden and Sadie have not stopped playing ever since they met.  They have been sharing bones, rawhides, ropes, etc. without an incident!Sadie has followed every command that I have given - sit, stay, come, go lay down - she seems very, very smart.  One thing that needs to be worked on is her heeling, or lack of it :)  She would be a good sled dog because she does like to pull. Within just a few hours she is already doing much better.  I think she just needs to have some practice and maybe obedience classes.  I was told that she likes to jump up on people but so far she has had good manners in that area, too.  She did have an accident yesterday but I think it was because of all the changes and getting used to a new home. The owner did say she is housebroken.  Like my resident dog, Sadie may also be an excitement/submissive urinater.  I haven't seen it but the gentleman who helped transport her has.  She isn't crate trained so I thought I would give her some lessons because it's nice to have that option :)  She slept all night by the side of my bed with no problem.  I'm not sure what time she got up because my wonderful husband gets up with the dogs on the weekend so I can sleep in.So in summary, "perfect" dog who needs help with heeling.  I will try the Gentle Leader today and see how that works. She has an appointment at the vet on Tuesday so I will send out an update with the results.

Sadie is a star at the 1st grader soccer games!  She had the whole team petting and even laying on her.  She took it very well and even seemed to enjoy it :)  She is soooooo good with all the  kids we come into contact with.  She seems to be unshakeable.  Her walking has improved greatly.  I can walk her with one finger now with the Gentle Leader.  Even when I just have her belt collar on it is very manageable.  She gets sooo excited to see new friends (dog and human), and that is when her pulling is the worst.  She really wants to go say hi and once I let her she is fine and we move on.  I can't tell you enough of how proud I am of this girl.  She is so smart and eager to please.  She has learned all kinds of new doggy manners with us.  She sits and waits to put her leash on, sits before going through a door, sits calmly before going into a dog park and waits for her meals in a sit.  Cesar Milan has nothing on this doggy girl.  I now call her "Sadie the Lady" because she has such good manners.  I think she could pick up on anything you wanted to teach her.  She would be good at agility - boy is she fast :)  Any of the dog sports, obedience, you name it, I think she would work at it until she could please.  Another big plus that I noticed happened today.  Sadie went outside (accidentally) with my 4 year old (who wasn't supposed to be out there).  I was a bit panicked but when I went outside to start looking for her, she was right there in the garage and hadn't ventured out to the unfenced yard.  She came right when I called her, I don't think she had any plans to go anywhere without us.  She has blended into our family and routine without a problem.  I really believe that if you are looking for a new member of your family and don't call on Sadie, it would be a big mistake.  She really is that good :)

Hi there,  my name is Sadie Mae but everyone just calls me Sadie.  I was reading all the other dogs bios and some of them got to write their own so I decided to sit down and pen my own, too.  I have been with my foster family for a week now and have been such a good girl (I would be good at your home too, if you adopt me).  My fur sister and I got to go to the park yesterday and play and we played really hard.  Foster mom said she trusts me at the park 100%.  I met lots of new friends and was really popular with everyone (even a 12 month old baby).  I tried on my Gentle Leader and it works wonders and I don't pull!!!!  My mom's getting me used to it slowly but already I'm walking much better :)  I came home from the park and had a bath and let my mom flush my ears because I was a swimming fool (I love swimming).  I let my foster mom do whatever needs to be done without ever complaining.  She says I'm an easy dog.  I'm not sure if I like the way that sounds but I guess it's a compliment.  I never wake up my foster parents, I just wait till they get up.  My foster mom said she really appreciated that because she needs all the beauty sleep she can get :)  Speaking of beauty sleep, I think it's about time I go lay down and get a little of my own :)Remember, if I sound like I would be a good fit in your family (I can't imagine that I wouldn't be), please email placementatragom [dot] org and you and your whole family can meet me    Have a good weekend and think about me :) Love, Sadie Mae

I want to give you a little backgroung on Sadie Mae.  Her owners were moving to Texas and they could only bring one big dog so they decided that Sadie would be easy to have adopted and then kept their senior Golden.  She is a Golden/Lab mix and gorgeous! They loved her very much and it shows because Sadie is a love bug!  I'm still waiting to find out what her issues are.  I starting to think she doesn't have any :)
Sadie went to the vet yesterday and seems to be very healthy :)  She was very polite when getting all her shots!!! The lady Sadie is a charmer:)  The vet tech wanted to bring her home with her.  She weighed 66.5 lbs. The vet wants her to trim  her figure down 5 to 10 pounds though.  Her previous owner told me she would feed her 5 cups of food a night!  The vet said to start her at a total of 3 cups and then reassess and maybe cut to 2 - 2 1/2.  She should be looking "good" just in time for swim suit season.  She met a cat at the vet and seemed to really like it.
I could go on and on about how good, sweet, loving and smart she is for days......I love this dog!  She is going to make some family sooo happy and they will wonder what they did before she became part of their pack.  She is fully housetrained - she whines at the door to be let out, she know some tricks and commands - shake, beg, sit, come.  Sadie doesn't talk much but my resident is trying to teach her to growl when playing tug. She now waits patiently for her food (I make my dogs do a "sit and wait" for their food).  I have given her full run of the house because I really trust her not to destroy anything - that's more than I can say for her foster fur sister Harmony.  She sleeps next to my bed with her head under the bed :)  She hasn't tried to jump up on the bed or other furniture - very good manners!  She gets excited when there is a new person and goes up on her hind legs and hops near them but not on them.  She loves to cuddle, too.  She will - when invited - crawl up in my lap.  She is still small enough to fit.  I love it!!!  My resident pup doesn't seem interested in being a lap dog :(
I tried the Gentle Leader on her and she sat there patiently while I tried to figure it out :)  She let me put it on with no problem.  She is one of the most gentle dogs I've met.  I took her on a quick walk with it on and she did much better, but because it was so new she did hop around a bit.  With a little more practice it will be natural to her.  Of course with some obedience classes she could use any collar and be a good walker.  I really don't think she was walked on a leash at her last home because they said she was a "self exerciser".  I'm not sure exactly what that means but I'm pretty sure it means they didn't go for walks.
As far as what I believe would be the best forever home for Sadie, I really think she would fit in anywhere :)  She has always been with kids and another dog and does seem to like a little action.  Her previous owner mentioned that a fence would be good because she likes to be outside and has broken her "tie-out" to get to another dog to socialize, but from what I see, if she is exercised and isn't bored she would do fine without a fence, too.  She definitely wants exercise and play time :)  Tired dogs are good dogs!  Bored dogs get into trouble - I learned that lesson the hard way :)
My kids don't want me to say it but....Sadie is ready to find her forever family now.  If you are interested in this wonderful dog, email placementatragom [dot] org and we will set up a meeting :)  You won't be disappointed!
