Sage 08-256

Profile

Sage has arrived here in Minneapolis after a trip with three great gals who brought him down from the Range! Sage is a GORGEOUS 10 month old male, red with beautiful blond highlights. He looks like he's wearing eyeliner around his gorgeous eyes, and he's got a great blocky head. He's a rambunctious guy, a little underweight, in need of learning some boundaries and some obedience training but this guy is going to be a jewel! He was rescued from a farm where the owner was going to shoot him; he hand been dumped there by the owner's brother, and the owner had three small children and no desire for a wild young thing on four legs. A good Samaritan saved him from being shot, and, thankfully, he's now in the lap of RAGOM. He arrived this afternoon, and he has wanted to mount all three of the resident dogs, but he has been "corrected" by Moe, the boss, several times and has responded well. He seems to be getting along fine with all of the dogs. He caught a glimpse of the cat here, and didn't react much, but we'll continue to see how that goes.  We're going to the vet for an exam and shots tomorrow and he'll be getting neutered real soon. He seems be a really happy dog, a little hand shy, but I'm guessing he'll be a prize for someone real soon!

Well, Sage has bounced back from his surgery like he never left the house. THe vet said to keep him quiet for a couple of days--fat chance! He was after Moe again as soon as he got in the house! I've kenneled him a bit just to keep him a little still, but he's in such great spirits, it's hard to contain him. He gave one whimper during the night, and Moe came downstairs to check the kennel and make sure he was okay. At night, when the rest of us traipse upstairs, Sage barks like crazy--he's just MAD that he is separated from Moe, but then he quickly settles down and doesn't usually make a peep. He doesn't mind being kenneled. This afternoon, the pack of four were racing around the yard, wearing themselves out, so I put him in his kennel for a while to rest and threw in a squeaky toy for amusement. Up wil now, Sage hadn't noticed them. This time he did, and it was adorable to watch him play with it! When he got out of the kennel, he was picking up every ball he could and collecting them by the dog bed. He is SUCH a pretty boy, and still such a puppy. His fur is still soft like baby fur, and his energy is definitely that of a pup. He will occasionally give these not so nice sounding growls when he is playing with Moe, and he does some rough play, but he hasn't shown any aggression at all. He let me take the toys from him, and he let me take his food dish away. He's a chow hound--when I shake the kibble in the dish, he is ready to go! And since he's a little skinny, I'm trying to feed him a bunch. He knows how to sit, he does answer to his name and comes when I call him (if Moe isn't too near), he might even know how to lay down. He knows what "no" means, he responds well when scolded (meaning he uses those big brown eyes to tell you he knows that he has been naughty!). He'll need a home with someone who will make sure he gets some badly needed obedience, someone who can teach him some manners and some boundaries, someone who is patient and who has a sense of humor. He'll also need a fence; he was a runner before he came into RAGOM, and I sense that is still there, wild thing that he is. He has been okay with my cat, although as he settles in a bit here, he has also given chase a few times. His abundance of energy would probably not make him a good match for smaller kids, as he would knock them over--at least until he learns to behave. But with someone who can give him the things listed above, I am quite sure that he'll be a gorgeous, fun-loving companion. He's a really sweet boy--even in this tornado stage he's in!

Sage visited the vet this morning, got his shots, his heartworm test, his microchip and an appointment for neutering. He weighs about 60 pounds, and is a little underweight. He's a really pretty guy--his ears are blond and fluffy and he has a dark ridge of fur running down his red muzzle. For the past 24 hours, he has been fixated on one thing: mounting the resident dogs. He's narrowed his pursuit now to Moe, the leader of the pack. Sage is OBSESSED with him, follows him everywhere, tries to climb on top of him every single chance he gets, will not give the poor guy a break. Even when Moe lies down for a nap, Sage is right there, 3 inches away, panting, staring. Moe keeps "correcting" him, sometimes quite strongly, but Sage doesn't seem to get it. He is going to be a great dog. He's very sweet, loves pets (when you can distract him from Moe), loves to play (there were some great rounds of canine wrestling in the yard this morning), but he is also a handful. He has spent his first 10 months tied up in a farmyard. He's  in great need of socialization, of training, of learning boundaries. He's teachable, but he's a project! He needs some taming and some bonding. He's very dog-oriented, so another dog in the house (who can put up with his pestering, which should begin to disappear after he is neutered) would probably be a good thing. Right now, because he's so rambunctious, small kids would probably get knocked over by him, so probably not a great thing for his prospective home. I'm going to continue to investigate how he does when I take food from him, but I have seen no signs of aggression; I'm also keeping a close eye on what seems to be some fascinating dog-dog dynamics. Sage won't be available until after he recovers from his neuter on Thursday, but if you're looking for a sweetheart dog who is going to require patience, diligence, exercise, a fence, and some concentrated work on training, I'm quite sure that Sage is going to grow into a great, sweet, happy, playful companion. Not to mention, having a looker like him around is a real bonus--he's adorable!
