Sally (Honey 07-479)

Profile

Meet Honey.  She is a beautiful 6 year old honey colored Golden Retriever.  She is one of five dogs rescued from a puppy mill in Missouri.  Thank you to all the volunteers involved in her rescue.  She is due to have her last litter of puppies around Labor Day.  We went to the vet yesterday and she is currently being treated for worms and got a dose of Frontline.   She is UTD on her vaccinations and weighs 71 lbs.   We are waiting on the heartworm results.  She is very gentle and allowed me to bath her, brush her, clean her ears, clip her nails, and pull multiple wood ticks off of her without any complaints.  She is not housetrained yet and that is something we are working on.  She is also learning how to walk nicely on a leash.  She is very smart and will have no problem learning how to be a real dog.  It will just take time.  More to come on this special girl soon.

Honey has been in her foster home for almost a month now and is doing very well.  I think we have finally figured out the potty-training problem!  We have been crating her during the day and that has taken care of any problems she has had with accidents. I still like to get up fairly early in the morning to make sure she doesn't have to hold it too long outside of her crate where she might be tempted.

Honey absolutely loves to go for walks so we have been enjoying our morning and evening walks every day.  She is definately used to the routine and knows when to sit and wait by the door.  She still gets a bit stubborn with the gentle leader while we are walking, but she fully accepts putting it on to go out.

There were a couple of times when we first got her that she growled and barked at the cats but I can happily report that she has no reactions to the cats at all anymore.  She actually sat next to one of them on the couch last week while they enjoyed a good petting together!  That was a sight to see.

Honey has an appointment to be spayed tomorrow, October 10.  She visited the vet last Friday and we were told that her false pregnancy had run its course and she was now ready to be spayed.  We ran into several cats and dogs at the vet and Honey didn't react at all.  She certainly loved the attention she received from everyone in the waiting room.

Honey continues to be a joy in our home.

Honey has a new foster home.

She arrived at our house last Wednesday, September 12, and has been a joy to have.  She is an absolute gem.  Her personality is very sweet and docile. She would be very content to sit all day and be pet on the head.  In fact, she will not leave our side and if we stop petting her for a moment, she will gently place one paw on our arm to notify that she would like the petting to continue.  It is adorable!

We have been walking her twice daily (unless it rains) and she has done a fantastic job on the leash.  She struggled the first couple of times with the Gentle Leader, but as soon as she realized that she was going to go for a nice long walk, she accepted it and now doesn't struggle and is actually excited to put it on.

Last Sunday we took a ride to Petco and she had a bath.  We didn't even notice her in the car because she laid down in the backseat and slept until we got there.  Her coat is so soft and looks so nice after being cleaned.  I think she knew it too!  She seemed to be strutting her stuff on the walk that night.

She has enjoyed jumping up on the couch with us and watching TV and getting the petting and attention that she has deserved for so long.

In the first day or two after coming to us Honey growled and barked at our cats.  We let her know that wasn't acceptable by gently scolding her and she hasn't reacted since.  Now she pretty much ignores them.

She has had a few accidents since she has been with us, but she is getting better.  It could be due to the change in location and schedule, or we think it might be due to the false pregnancy.  She seems to know what to do when we let her out, she hasn't had an accident when she is crated, and she hasn't had an accident in our presence.  There have been a few days when I have come home from work and she hasn't been able to hold it.  Once again, we are working on this and I think it will be very soon that she is completely trained.

She is a great dog. She will make someone a very special companion.

Honey is doing great.  She seems to be recovering quickly from her false pregnancy.  She is adjusting to the routine of family life, taking frequent walks, and enjoying the company of her new foster sister Pudding 07-522.  Honey has been at our house for almost three weeks now and she has come a long way in that short amount of time.
