Sam 08-380

Profile

Here is Big Sam boy. Using the words of a good friend of mine “He is a big hunk a love!” SAM IS A DOLL. A GENTLE GIANT. Sam came to us a few days ago--- he rode well here to South Dakota from central Minnesota. Sam did fine meeting the crew we have here. (3 dogs and 3 cats). Sam has a wonderful soft coat (which had been shaved a while back and is coming back in nicely). He will be a medium/darker golden color with some lighter highlights I think. Some of the basics we know thus far:

  • Sam was born in April 1998 and is 10 years old;
  • Sam is a big boy, about 96# at the current time;
  • Sam has been fully vetted and we have not witnessed any physical problems;
  • Sam is very friendly boy with good manners;
  • Sam is doing great with other dogs;
  • Sam likes to ‘give chase’ to a couple of the cats, however, he is not that quick!
  • Sam walks wonderful on a leash and does just fine and has not pulled;
  • Sam is fully housetrained;
  • Sam loves water and to swim (according to prior home);
  • Sam rides fine in a car/truck and needs some help getting in (big!);
  • Sam is on good food now and needs to lose weight;
  • Sam sleeps all night, quietly on the floor, by the bed, on a big blanket;
  • Sam did come with a crate which he will go into once in a while to lay down;
  • Sam has no aggressions nor any problems with foods or guarding;
  • Sam does great with young children.

    Sam I am……..

Mr. Sam was a great boy at the vet office and is completely current on all vaccinations and is micro-chipped. Obviously Sam is a BIG boy and needs good exercise and diet. He is on Eukanuba Adult/Senior food with glucosamine/chondroitin and some chicken broth. He eats at his station along with the other dogs with no problems at all. Sam takes (good) treats very nice. Sam has huge shoulders, is built almost ‘lion-like” I think. He is such a good boy and Sam is really enjoying the ‘freedom” of a fenced in backyard. He will stand at the door to let you know he wants out. Otherwise he just goes out with everyone else.

Sam has a totally wonderful disposition. A gentle guy who of course loves to be pet, brushed and fed! He really enjoys his walks (they are not real long yet as the weather here in South Dakota has not cooperated very well!) so we have only gone about a mile at a time. Sam has his crate which he came with here in the kitchen and if he chooses, can go in. We have not ‘crated’ him yet. The plan is to ‘baby-gate’ while at work and see how we do. Sam will carry a stuffed toy around but not tear it up. He loves to lay by you and be where you are. Sam will lay by your feet and with that body, sure keeps them warm!

Sam is totally incredible for 10…… just incredible. Other than the need to lose weight, he is fine.

Sam was a one-owner dog for the last 8.5 years of his life. So therefore, we really want to try and make him welcome with a good schedule and lots of love of course. Sam came to RAGOM due to severe storm anxiety issues. He was fine hunting and with holiday noises. Apparently just thunderstorms wherein he pants, drools and has been destructive. Of course this is the time of year we probably will not see any of that? (Hard to say at this point.) I do think the ‘calming’ affect our other senior dogs have he really enjoys. He did come from a ONE dog home and really is enjoying his “friends" here. Sam is very familiar I feel with people food but does not beg. This ‘big bear’ is a total delight to have! Sam is going to make a wonderful companion and in a short time, has become trusting and patient. Perhaps Sam will need someone who is home MORE due to prior storm anxiety and to learn to deal with them emotionally and medically. Again he really enjoys the freedom of the fenced back yard and loves the snow too. We have another senior golden girl and they look so similar, it is a blast. Again, this is one ‘hunk-a-love’ big boy……A big ol’ teddy bear babe! We truly enjoy fostering Sam……..ONE SUPER SENIOR! Yeah……….Sam I am…..

It is with great happiness and warmth--- for Sam and the “F” family ---that they have found each other forever! “Sam I Am” was adopted yesterday. Let me first say, this is one of the most wonderful families. This is a family who checked out RAGOM, went to the picnic, met other RAGOM fosters and dogs, and really did their homework. This is a family who waited for the right time for hopefully the right dog to come into their lives. This is a family who truly understands and researched the needs of the ‘dog’ , what they can offer and the meaning of Rescue. This is a family who traveled with their family several hours to meet their new senior boy! This is where rescue efforts and communication really works great and also, I have to say, why we really LOVE what we do as fosters!

A family who went through the application process, the home-visit, etc., reviewed and read the web and went to RAGOM events. All in making sure they choose (or the dog did) the ‘right’ rescued golden from RAGOM! A SENIOR rescued golden! Sam is in a family with young children who were so ready for this addition of a golden retriever, and a golden boy who was more than elated about his new family! I must say this is such a great feeling-----for Sam first of all, for the “F” family and for me, as a foster. This family had great questions all ready and listened very well to answers, did their research, got their children up front and personal with this dog and to really understand the ‘needs’ of a rescue dog, a rescued SENIOR dog.

These SENIORS dogs are well trained, easy going, loving, and so ready to capture the heart of a family who will love them forever. Here I must also add, there are no guarantees on ANY age dog who is adopted, and that the autumn years of these magnificent dogs are just the very best there is! What you see is what you get! Here is a BIG golden boy who is so happy to be with a young family and some pretty great children who deserve him! (Yes, Mom and Dad are great too!) Thank you “F” family for being so great, for being such good listeners, and for searching out a senior golden! This is what it is all about! Why RAGOM is there to take in a (senior) rescued golden(s) and so that they will have the very best we can do/offer for them not just medically, but emotionally and truthfully and how we as fosters, can sit back in awe at the wonder of this great breed and how goldens continue to be one of the best breeds in the world.

I hope this story touches more of you folks out there considering a RAGOM golden and just how wonderful they ALL are, especially those SENIORS! Applicants: thanks to your research, time and efforts, donations, opening your homes and offering your total love, that is what makes RAGOM a great running ‘golden retriever machine!’ From BIG SAM: Thank you “F” family! I am ‘home’ now, and ready to live happy ever after………
