Sam arrived today from Minnesota.  He is a 6yr old, neutered male.   He is also house broken and crate trained.   He is one of the most loving dogs we have had as a foster.  I don't believe there is a mean bone in his body.  He is average size but he has a big head, and a big tongue as you will see in the photos (that just means big kisses - which he loves to give!).  He met our resident and foster dogs without incident (lots of kisses) and has shown no interest in cats.  I don't think this guy will encounter anyone that he does not love.  He loves to sit close to (or on) people and always wants his hand held.  If you are looking for a big love bug you will find it in Sam.  More info as we get to know this guy!  Please let placementatragom [dot] org know if you are interested!

As a foster, many dogs come through our home on their way to their forever home.  Each one touches us a different way and a piece of them always remains with us.  When we picked Sam up to bring him home I will never forget his giant tongue hanging out the window getting it all slobbery.  Sam had spent quite some time in boarding having his heart worm treated and by the tongue you could tell he was happy and stressed to be out of there.  While it has not always been easy with Sam behavior wise he has come a long way.  When he first arrived he would chew up picture frames from the wall, things on bookshelves, and anything else he could get to.  We finally Sam-proofed the house with gates in front of everything he could get to and over time removed them to test what he would do.  He still on occasion dumps the garbage can for leftover Chinese or corn on the cob but we have finally found a Sam-proof garbage can so we are safe for a while.  Somewhere in between all his crazy antics he not only stole our dinner but our hearts.  He has welcomed every foster dog that has shared our home temporarily, travels with us to Kansas City, and spends weekends camping with our two resident dogs and us.  On normal days at home he spends his time wrestling with our resident goldens Daphne and Junior (07-102) and daily pins Daphne down to lick her ears clean.  We are pleased to say Sam has found his forever home with us.   Thank you so much to his sponsors for supporting RAGOM and Sam through his journey in foster care.  Without generous people like you what RAGOM does for dogs that end up without a home would not be possible.  Our journey as fosters does not stop with the adoption of Sam.  We know he will welcome all dogs that come through our home with open paws and lots of ear cleaning.  We also know that no day with Sam will be ordinary because Sam is not ordinary – he is extraordinary.

Sam made the trip to Kansas City for the 4th of July and did well.  Fireworks are legal there so it was very loud!  He was not brave enough to watch them out the door but I could see him sneaking a peek from time to time.  Here are the things Sam needs in a forever family:

  • Sam loves small kids but I would not suggest toddlers.  Sam tends to jump and get very excited and could easily knock someone over.
  • Sam can be a counter surfer so a home where things are kept put away is best.  Same with garbage.  He does not get into it unless there is something that smells extra good.
  • Sam will need a home with a fenced yard.
  • Sam tends to have bouts with colitis so his family will need to keep an eye on that.  It is easily treated with antibiotics.
  • Sam will most definitely need another dog who loves to play.  He loves to lick other dog’s ears, wrestle and play chase in the yard so he must go to a home with another dog.

Attached is a new photo of Sam in the car on the way to Kansas City laying on his favorite foster brother.  He spends half the time in the back seat with the other dogs but also wants to spend half his time in the front seat on my lap looking out the passenger window.

Sam had an eventful weekend!  He went to Grandma's for a few hours while we went camping (see her write up below).  His foster brother Harley (09-035) had a hard time at the camp ground so they swapped places and Sam spent the weekend camping.  Sam did great.  He spent his weekend sleeping on the picnic table, chasing birds, trying to get into the lake to get the geese (tie out was too short) and pouting through the camper window when he had to go in so we could eat.  He found his fair share of trouble this morning.  When they went out to go potty he stuck his head in the fire pit and found the foil from last night's dinner.  It, of course, still had some remnants in it so he went to town!  :O)  He is an exuberant guy!

I have attached a few photos!

Just a few words from the "grandma foster" about Sam.  He spent time with us this weekend and I have to say that someone is missing out on a fantastic dog!!  He gets a little excited in new situations but settles down very quickly and is a great boy.  I am so surprised that he has not found his forever home!!  Maybe the fact that he had heart worms makes people nervous but it shouldn't.  He has gotten a clean bill of health and has the same life expectancy (what ever that is) as other dogs.  He is great with dogs, kids, cats and every person he meets!!  He might have a couple habits that need to be addressed by his forever family, but what dog doesn't??

Please consider this wonderful little guy if you are looking for a great addition to your family!!  You will not be sorry!!

Sam went to the Petsmart event yesterday and did pretty well.  Lots of jumping on people which we are working with him daily to correct.  He met all the other dogs fine and gave lots of kisses.  Sam would still do best in a home with no small children, and one with nothing at his level (including his level when he stands on his hind legs!).  He also needs some work with leash walking so he would need some obedience training for sure!  Here are some new photos!

Well, the big lug continues to do well.  We have "Sam-proofed" the house now which means baby gates galore when we leave.  His forever family will need to be one who doesn't have a lot of things at his level because he will get them when left home alone.  This is not a problem at night as he won't leave the bed as long as you are in it.  He is a snuggle bug for sure.

After all this time getting to know Sam we believe he would be happiest in a home with another dog who likes to play.  He pouts when no one will play with him, and so much enjoys the companionship of people and dogs.  Here are some new photos!

Look into my eyes... you want to adopt me! :O)

Chillin in the chair! A lap dog for sure!

Carefully watching and waiting patiently for a bite!

It paid off! A lick of Mac n' cheese!

Must always have my bone close by!

I thought I would give a list of the things Sam is looking for in his forever home.

  • A physical fence
  • Someone who will take him on a walk a day
  • Someone who loves to snuggle
  • He would be happier with another dog so he had someone to play with.   He is not a huge dog but he is strong so someone who could handle his play would be best.
  • He is fine with kids
  • He does not bother cats but will put himself in between two cats if they are spatting :O)
  • Someone who can understand the need to keep things off the counter, floor and keep the garbage can out of his reach.

He is a wonderful boy!  Don't miss out!

Everyone watching foster dad eat dinner.
Do you think they know they might get something
tiny if they wait patiently?

Making sure my foster brother Junior's ears are nice and clean.

Just lay still buddy, I will clean em up!

First of all, THANK YOU so much Mary and Carl S for sponsoring Sam in memory of their sweet Loki.  Prior to coming into foster care Sam had to undergo heart worm treatment.  Your generous sponsorship will help cover Sam's medical costs, and shows how wonderful you are to sponsor a dog in foster care!

Sam has had a pretty exciting weekend.  First of all, his partner in crime came back to visit for a few days - Hope!   Here are some photos!

Then he got his first Frosty Paw Ice Cream!

 Had another small visitor...

And last but for sure not least... IT SNOWED!  A LOT!!

He loves to eat the snow....

Loves to roll in the snow (we don't have to shovel once he is done!)

And loves to watch the snow fall from the trees!

Sam continues to do well.  He is a grunter and a groaner for sure!  So far no accidents.  Tonight will be his first night being out of the kennel and sleeping in the bedroom.  We will let you know how that goes!  One thing we have learned about Sam is he will destroy any toy he is provided with as you can see by the fuzz and string in all the photos!  He sure has fun doing it (and does not eat any of it) but we are switching to bones from now on. Here are some new photos.

Sam has settled in well and continues to be one of the sweetest dogs I have ever fostered!  He knows sit, shake and lay down.  He is totally housebroken and loves to play!  It doesn't get any better than this guy!  Here are a few new photos now that he has settled down from his transport!
