Sam 10-117

Profile

Sam, who is nine weeks old, arrived today. The surrendering family had three young boys who thought they needed a puppy. Sam added more of a burden to the daily chores than they ever thought he would. They just couldn't handle the load.

Sam has a couple of different kinds of internal parasites so is on the last few days of medicines. These cause him to have slightly loose bowels. We think that is the only reason that we've ever had a "mess" to clean up and only in his crate at night when he can't let us know he has to go potty. He asks to go out when he needs to "go", either by pawing at the door or barking at the door. There have been no daytime" accidents".

When he goes into his crate at night he will make a little noise or two and then settle down for a good night's sleep. During the day if we need to leave for a short time he also goes into the crate but there isn't even a "peep" until we get back.

Sam is a good little boy.

Sam is also a bit headstrong. He knows what he wants and isn't afraid to let you know about it. He'll definitely need some good boundaries and obedience training when the time is appropriate.

Sam's color is toward the red end of the Golden Retriever spectrum. Judging by the size of his feet he'll be at least an 80-pounder as an adult. And looking at his profile he's going to be a really good-looking dog when he grows up.

So, let's recap: nine-week-old purebred Golden Retriever puppy who is basically house trained and who is drop-dead handsome. Who wouldn't be interested? Are you?

Sam is now being fostered in Princeton and met our two resident goldens with no problem. He is an energetic and curious little guy! He also met our resident cat and has been working to make “friends” with him every day. Sam is determined to play with the cat!

Sam is just about 13 weeks old now. He spends his days playing with the big dogs, napping and loves, loves, loves toys. He loves to chew on his rawhide and discovered that nyla bones are great too. Most of all Sam loves dog beds and blankets; he likes to have a blanket to lay on where ever he is. He is especially fond of the dog bed in our bedroom because he can dive in the blankets and snuggle in!

Sam loves to be outside; he likes to play with our dogs in the grass. When we go for walks in our fields he is in heaven. Sam loves to follow his nose and listen to the birds. He is a smart little pup who is very interested in everything around him.

What did we learn about Sam this week?

Well, a couple of interesting things, actually.

We began to walk Sam around the neighborhood on leash. He does quite well for a puppy.  But one interesting development: he is leery of curbs, unpainted curbs mostly.  He seems to be fine with yellow-painted curbs.  He didn't like to go up a curb, and he didn't like to go down a curb. With some prodding and some experience, we've been making progress on the curb "thing".  It'll be fine.

Another surprise is his reaction to the vacuum cleaner.  We've had a lot of dogs go thru the household, and none of them has been friendly with the vacuum cleaner.  Some actively don't like the device; it scares them.  Others just prefer to be in another room from the vacuum cleaner.  But I've never had a dog want to be involved in the vacuuming process ... until Sam.  Normally a dog doesn't (much) slow the vacuuming chore, but with Sam's help it took about half-again as long.  And he almost got stepped on a couple of times.  But he wanted to be up close and personal to the machine and around each corner he'd approach it with tail wagging.

There have been no "accidents" in the house for days. When he wants to go outside, he'll go to the door and bark.  Just one bark.  If you don't arrive in a timely fashion, he'll give you another little bark.

Keeping the dog toy box full is a problem.  He likes to have quite a few toys strewn about.  I guess that's so he can jump from one to another without any wasted time.  The toys that he seems to spend the most time with are the ones that have been "de-fluffed" by other dogs.  The ones that are pretty much floppy and flat and should be thrown away.  That's not to say that he won't "de-fluff" the occasional stuffed frog with the best of them, but he just spends more time with the "pre-flattened" ones.

Sam learned stairs this weekend.  Until today he stayed in the lower level, and that was just fine. The resident dog went up and down, and Sam stayed down. This afternoon when the resident dog went upstairs, Sam followed.

On Monday Sam goes in to the Veterinarian to be neutered. He has had a second fecal test and everything is good. He's fit and ready to move to a Forever Home.
