Sam (Booster/Sam 11-269)

Profile

Sam is an 8-year-old, gorgeous Golden Retriever mix (his surrendering owner stated that he is mixed with Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever)! He has such soft fur with beautiful markings on his chest and feet and gorgeous feathering!

Sam was adopted from RAGOM 5 years ago, and recently returned to RAGOM after the SO's (surrendering owner's) young daughter climbed on him and he mouthed her, leaving a scratch on her cheek. For this reason, Sam will be adopted out to a family with older children.

Sam is about as calm as they come! He loves to lay down and chill for hours on end if you will let him, and LOVES to snuggle. On the flip side, Sam gets really excited when he gets to go on his daily walks and run around the back yard. He does the most adorable little “pounce” when he gets very excited. Sam knows basic commands (sit, shake, lay down, heel) and is very much a people pleaser! Sam also has free roam of the house during the work day and is always waiting by the door with tail wagging when we get home! He does great in a crate if needed and respects baby gates. Sam is house-trained and will let you know he needs to go outside by nudging you with his nose, and if that doesn’t work you might get a couple dog kisses to get your attention!

Last week while mowing the lawn, Sam would make his way around the house to “watch” through the windows – he was very intrigued by what was going on.

Sam and our RD (Resident Dog) have not warmed up to each other yet. The SO (surrendering owner) stated that Sam would sometimes have aggression issues with other dogs, but not all. We are hopeful that the two will come around soon!

Sam is UTD on all vaccines and is in great health according to his vet visit! Sam is such a great dog and will be a great addition to your household!

Our sweet Sammy passed away in February of 2020. He was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoma early in 2020 and did not have much time after that.

Sammy was the joy that graced every space he entered, and time stopped when he passed, life inched along in slow motion and the only thing that came quickly were the tears from losing the physical presence of our best friend. There is no relationship better than the canine human bond – it surpasses words, for sure!

Sammy lives on in our hearts, minds and guts, and not a day goes by that we don’t think about that super soft, chilled-out, gorgeous boy! Sam, my husband and I were the three amigos and had such a wonderful life together.

He was a big lovable sweetheart - we adored him and his personality. And we worked around his issues with other dogs, always keeping him comfortable, happy and so so so loved! Life was complete with Sammy. He rescued us more than we rescued him, for sure. I can still feel his fur on my cheek :)

Aside from having fun in the backyard, walking and hanging out with us at home surfing every plush surface, Sammy loved traveling up North and spending time at our lake cabin. I swear one of us could simply think the words ‘car ride’ and ‘up north’ and Sammy would be hopping around with excitement, ready to pack his ‘go bag’ full of bones, treats and boots (depending on the weather) and hop in the car.

We could never get him to jump in the water, but he did absolutely everything else fun there is to do at the lake in every season of the year. His favorite was running around the property playing tag and chase with my husband (his BEST friend), then resting while chewing on a nice, big delicious stick! He loved that cool, up north fresh air and activities.

Sammy’s golden life lives on and we know he has met up with our other golden boys, and all three are romping around together unfettered by ailments, free of disease. We can feel them keeping a close eye on us as we continue to rescue their golden friends. Their loving spirits go on in our hearts!

Thank you, sweet Sammy, for loving us, sharing your life with us and making us better humans. We love you and miss you! We will be together again someday…

It’s been over ten months since we adopted Sweet Sammy, and this update is long overdue!  Sam is napping with us right now as we type but has given us a basic outline of what to include here.   Sam is a total sweetheart who is a mellow fellow, but energetic at all the right times – a perfect balance.  We are so blessed to share his Golden Life with him!  Sam has full reign in his new home and takes complete advantage of resting on every plush surface.  Surfing from couch to couch and bed each day, he sleeps in bed with us every night leaving us little room for our own bodies, but we love it.  Sam is a heavy snuggler who loves being with us, and the feeling is mutual!

We frequently work from home, and on those days, Sam brings his bone to work, under the desk.  He is a hard worker!  On the days we are away, when we return, Sam always meets us at the door with great exuberance, and then runs to his toy box to grab a bone or a stuffed buddy.  Often, he’ll let us know how much he’s missed us with a long howl.

In Sam’s leisure time, he enjoys longs walks, sniffing and playing in the backyard, digging up gopher tunnels (a true U of M fan!), car rides where he often lets his flow fly, eating tomatoes fresh from the garden, carrots, treats, and chewing bones.  Sam LOVES sitting on the couch looking out the window always letting us know about perimeter activity.  He’s a big fan of movie night when we all enjoy popcorn.  He also loves going for trips up north to the lake where he goes for boat rides, nature walks and wades in the water.

Sam even loves trips to the vet for his wellness exams.  The vet and vet assistants love him commenting on how chill he is.  He’s a very calm, excellent patient and is in great health!  He still gets very excited when we see other dogs or bikers on walks, and we continue to work with him on that.  While Sam tolerates a shower every now and then, he RELISHES being brushed often – he just loves being petted, rubbed and brushed.  He is the softest buddy known to man – severe touchability!

Sam has a special indicator – his tongue!  We know just how relaxed he is by how far it sticks out of the left side of his mouth.  See one of the pictures as an example.  The more tongue you see, the more relaxed he’ll be!  Sam also knows just what to do when one of us is under the weather – he sticks right by our side suspending any requests for attention, making sure we are well cared for until we’re 100%.  As soon as he knows we’re back to normal, he’ll resume gently pawing us for rubs.

Sam has brought us so much joy and love!  We are so grateful for RAGOM and thank all of the volunteers who helped Sam come into our lives to continue to live the Golden Life.  Sam will be one of the many ambassadors at Goldzilla 2017.  Please find him and say “hi!” as Sam loves humans so much!

Sam continues to delight us during his stay at our home and has taken a liking to his Foster parents' bed during the day while we are at work and loves finding his spot on the couch. His SO (surrendering owner) stated that he got to sleep in bed with them, so it must feel like a special treat during the day!

Sam got to go on a couple of car rides this past weekend and absolutely LOVED it! He sits so nice in the car and loves to rest his head on the center console and nap when the drive gets too long. He got lots of smiles and waves from cars next to us at the stop lights!

Sam attended Meet & Greet event at Chuck & Don’s in Shakopee last weekend and loved all the attention and seeing other RAGOM dogs. He was very calm and sat down very nicely during the event. While he enjoyed the company, he still is warming up to other dogs (including our resident Golden).

Sam has been loving his daily walks out in the country (he gets about a 2 mile walk) and enjoys all the smells and sights. He does get really excited when he sees other dogs but is easily re-directed and will heel for the duration of the walk.

Sam is eager to settle down with a family to call his own to share his snuggles and company!

Original bio - August, 2011

Meet Booster!  A HUGE thanks to Elwyn, Sue O., and Christi T. for bringing him to me all the way from Fargo, ND.  Booster is a 2 year old male golden mix, who was surrendered to RAGOM by a family that loved him very much.  Unfortunately, they hit a bumpy road and due to a job loss, they had to move to an apartment where they weren't able to take him with.  RAGOM is happy to step in and help this sweet boy find a new Furever Home, and I am thrilled to be able to help him out!

This beautiful boy is a light honey color with white markings on his head, nose, chest, and feet.  I'm not sure what he's mixed with, but he has a big blocky head, and he seems all golden to me.  He has the cutest crimpys on his ears and has the softest fur!  Booster weighs 75 lbs, which is a good weight for him, and he's tall, long, and lean.  And he is sweet sweet sweet!  He will lean into you for pets and snuggle with you in bed!  He loves to be next to you and will lay down underneath the desk when I'm at the computer.  He is such a happy boy and his tail is always wagging and his butt wiggling.

Booster appears to be housetrained because he hasn't had any accidents in our house.  He's crate trained and will go into his crate without an argument.  I suspect he might be okay with free roam when you're gone, but we haven't tried that yet.  He walks on leash just fine but gets really excited when we walk by other people or dogs, so a gentle leader is very helpful on those occasions.  He knows some commands and is so far very well behaved.  He gets along fine with both my dogs, big and small, but I don't have cats so I'm not sure about that.  We don't have kids either but he lived with kids in his previous home and he takes treats very gently so I think he will be okay with kids.  I'll have to introduce him to some kids and see though.

Booster (or Boostie as we sometimes call him!) doesn't seem to have any fears.  Thunderstorms didn't faze him and I had to tell him to move when I was vacuuming.  Some fireworks went off outside and he just barked.  He barks when someone comes to the door, but he doesn't seem to be a barker otherwise.  He is a slow eater so I have to stand around him while he eats because my dogs will hover around like vultures!  I'm told he was free fed at his previous house (that would never work at my house!) so he will step away from the bowl even when he isn't finished.  He hasn't exhibited any resource guarding - in fact, he hasn't really exhibited ANY issues so far!  Either he's a really good boy or he's just too shy still to act out, only time will tell.

For such a young guy, he is surprisingly mellow.  He likes to play and loves his walks, but he'll settle down and lounge around when you want him to.  He is starting to play with toys and tennis balls some and he loves the nylabone.  He plays and wrestles with my old golden boy and he happily chased my little min pin around the house when she got the zoomies!

Booster went to the vet and is up to date on all his vaccinations.  He did test positive for coccidia, a parasite in the intestinal tract, but is asymptomatic and on some meds for that.  It should clear up in a couple weeks no problem.  He was heartworm negative and is on Heartgard and Frontline, has been microchipped, and he has the cleanest ears I've ever seen!  He is very clean and in all around good shape.  He will be neutered on 8/25 and then should be good to find his forever home!

I will write more as we get to know this guy better.  Please contact your placement advisor if you are interested in meeting or learning more about Booster!
