Samantha 'Sam' 13-045

Profile

Our newest foster pup, Samantha, doesn't look much like a Golden, but she has the sweet Golden personality! She's so sweet and wants to be around us all the time! When she's not around us, she's wrestling with out resident dog. She's scrappy, our resident dog is much bigger than she is and she doesn't seem to mind. Samantha spent the first months of her life outside on a farm and got into some trouble for chewing things up and running away. When she came into RAGOM's care, there wasn't a foster to take care of her so she spend a few months in boarding. She is very happy to have a foster home, but there are a few mysteries that we are trying to figure out. First, she lost some weight in boarding and no one can figure out why. She still has plenty of muscle tone, but needs to gain a little weight (she should be about 15 pounds more than she is now). The other mystery is her vomiting. This may have caused her weight loss, but we don't really know for sure. We've been working closely with the vet to help her stop vomiting and hopefully gain some weight and it's working slowly.

Her health issues haven't really slowed her down. She's got puppy energy and could play and wrestle all day long. She loves walks and we are working on "walking etiquette." I don't think she spent much time on a leash before we got her, so we've got some training to do! She also loves to be outside and guards the yard from squirrels and rabbits (apparently birds are ok). A couple times she chased a squirrel right over our fence. We got smart and fixed the area in the fence where she was escaping. Lucky for us, she loves her people and came running back when I called her.

Samantha is a sweet pup, with a lot of energy. She's great with kids but we have watch her and make sure she doesn't jump on them and knock them over! Her previous owners said she doesn't do well with cats and judging from her squirrel and rabbit chasing, I don't think Samantha and cats would be a good mix. She also has some food and toy guarding issues (with my resident dog not with people) and we are working on that. Unfortunately, my resident dog has toy guarding issues too, so I have to take all the toys away when they are together. My kids take Samantha outside (without the other dog) to play fetch and she LOVES it!!!

She's a very sweet pup and hopefully her medical issues will resolve soon (or at least we can figure out the cause of the issues). In the meantime, we will continue working with and snuggling with this sweetie. Check back for updates!!

Updates

Samantha (Sam) has been living with us for a few months now and is loving life. As soon as she gets up and eats her breakfast, she waits by the back door to go outside to chase animals and chew sticks. Sometimes she runs laps, especially when she has a lot of energy to burn and our resident dog doesn't feel like playing. If he does feel like playing, they wrestle like bears!

As Sam has settled in, we've decreased her medicine. She's only on one medicine to help with her vomiting and we are hoping she won't need this medicine forever. She gets one pill one hour before she eats. We've gradually switched from prescription dog food to a puppy food, hopefully she will start to gain weight. She hasn't gained weight since she's lived with us, but has maintained her weight which is great (she's still underweight, but we're working on it:).

In addition to loving the outdoors, she loves to go on walks and we are working on her walking manners. She still pulls on the leash but is getting better every day. We took her hiking and she LOVED it!! When we got to a lake, she jumped in to retrieve a stick. She loves the water and didn't seem to mind that the water was completely over her head!

Sam stays in her kennel at night and when we are gone, we did an experiment and let her stay out for a few hours when we were gone. We came home to the couch pillow shredded all over the living room. Needless to say, Sam stays in her kennel when we leave now!

We're happy Sam isn't throwing up so much anymore and she seems really happy living the RAGOM life! We are going to keep working on her manners and hopefully her health will continually improve! She's a sweetie and we are happy to have her as our foster!
