Sam/Brandy 07-620

Profile

Samantha/Brandy was found as a stray in Northern Minnesota and the Good Samaritans who found her did everything they could to try to find the owner. She was not microchipped. Someone called the people who found her and said she sounded like their dog, Brandy. That was the last time they were heard from – they never came to see if it was their dog. The Good Samaritan’s daughter called her Samantha and contacted RAGOM because she had adopted one of her dogs from RAGOM. When we picked Samantha up to foster her, we tested the name Brandy and found that she responded to it every time – thus the name change.

The Vet estimated that Brandy is approximately 3 - 4 years old. She is now UTD on her shots, but tested positive for Lyme’s Disease. She is currently on antibiotics for that and was just spayed this week, so we are keeping her quiet for the next 10 days. She weighs 52 pounds and is very petite. She is trusted with the run of the house with no problems while we are at work. Brandy loves people and attention. She gets along GReat with our resident male dog and is good with our 2-year-old grandson. This dog is a real sweet girl.

Brandy is back to normal and is available for adoption. We hate to see her go because she is very affectionate, loves to cuddle and she is very well behaved. She’s had the run of the house since the second day we’ve had her and she has never had an accident or done anything inappropriate in the house. She doesn’t need to be crated. We are very attached to her. She loves sleeping next to us on the bed and also likes lying next to us with her head on our lap when we sit on the couch.

Brandy does feel threatened by dogs that are larger than her and she acts aggressively towards them until she gets to know them. She listens and comes most of the time except when she is distracted by something, like another dog. I’m sure she has never had any real obedience training. She would do best if she were the only dog in the family. Whoever is lucky enough to adopt this sweetheart will have to promise to take her through an obedience school. She needs to learn how to meet other dogs and also learn to come every time when called, even when she is distracted.

Brandy (Samantha 07-620) was spayed 15 days ago. Besides being sore from getting spayed, she had a false pregnancy and then a couple of her exterior stitches got infected. So poor Brandy had to go back to the Vet to get it lanced, tested and get another penicillin prescription for the infection. She had to wear a T-shirt for a few days to keep her from licking the incision area. That’s all healing nicely now and she’s free from infection and the T-shirt. She is feeling better now and is about 70% of how she was, but she still has some false pregnancy behaviors. She has regained her appetite, and is acting more normal most of the time. Brandy is playing some with our resident dog but has also gone after him when she thinks he is threatening her babies. She also went after a couple of the neighbor dogs without being provoked. She is always very sweet and gentle with us, but resident dog is a little wary of her now. Our vet suggested Brandy remains unavailable for another week or two until we know for sure if she is other dog aggressive or if this is still her hormones influencing her.

Brandy (Samantha 07-620) was spayed a week ago and she is having a tough time with recovery. She is going through a false pregnancy besides being sore from surgery so she doesn’t want to play with our resident GR. She doesn’t want any other neighbor dogs to get too close to her right now and will snap and snarl at them if they get too close, too fast or attempt to play with her. She is eating, drinking and eliminating normally. She does come down and will lay next to us or on our lap to get petted and comforted. Brandy sleeps at night between us and loves to cuddle. She stays on our bed most of the time this past week because that’s her safe spot and she is mothering a couple stuffed animals and tennis balls. I talked to the vet about her again today and he thinks she will just come out of it naturally in a few more days. She is currently unavailable until she is feeling better and is acting normal again.
