Samwise 09-062

Profile

Samwise 09-062 says Hi from the woods and water of northern MN! Samwise prefers to be called Sammy so that's were doing! Sammy is a 3 year old spayed Female Purebred Golden Retriever who arrived to us from South Dakota thru the efforts of a whole bunch of RAGOM volunteers. Sammy's previous family had some life changes occur and a big thank you to them for contacting RAGOM as we now have a super girl that's going to be a great dog to adopt!

Sammy has been here a few days and was a bit cautious when meeting us and spent a day getting used to her new surroundings. Sammy is a beautiful red color, weighs about 87 lbs (she needs to lose a few lb's), and knows all the basic commands. She has had the complete run of the house since arriving and there's been no problems with her. Sammy walks great on a regular extended leash with some pulling which only takes a small tug to correct. She's getting better at coming when her name is called, and does all her duties outside in the woods. Sammy was originally a bit hesitant on the leash as she was looking at all the places she can play in with a "is this all for me?" look and with a hand wave she was playing in the snow, which she likes to roll in as most GR's do. She has some interest in the little critters such as squirrels and didn't know what to do at all when she sited her first deer....we don't think the deer had anything to fear. We do have timber wolves around and we're pretty sure she caught the scent of one as she bristled at something in the woods and she needed a reminder that she goes wherever the person holding the leash goes.

Sammy's previous family noted that she can be very timid of strangers and stairs, and does great with children (her former home had 5 kids from 1.5 to 13 years), and decent with most other dogs. We've been introducing Sammy to neighbors and other dogs and while she is still cautious at first she's been great at following our lead and within a couple of minutes allows herself to be petted by her newly made friends. She's been playing well with neighbors dogs even though she's still leashed to us and we're sure she'd play more if she was off-leash. Sammy does get startled by loud noises but seems to settle down afterwards.

Sammy visited our good friends at the Garrison Animal Hospital in Garrison, MN yesterday and Dr. Katy checked her over and said that it appears she may have had some allergies previously, which is not unusual for GR's. Dr. Katy went thru Sammy's meds that accompanied her and has been adjusted to just 1 pill a day, and we'll give her a bath soon. Sammy did have some dandruff type flakes on her when she arrived which have pretty much disappeared as she's enjoying being groomed a couple of times a day, and we'll keep watch on this.

We've earned Sammy's trust over the past few days which will likely be the same for others she meets. We've been working on her food to come up with the right mix that she'll enjoy and help her skin and coat. As she has full roam she can sleep anywhere but has now selected our room to sleep or hang out in. She'll let you know when she needs to go out and is always looking around to make sure we are around. She will gently take treats from your hand and she owes me one fig newton which disappeared while I was tying my boots. We have not seen any signs of counter surfing, garbage digging, or climbing in an open dishwasher.

Sammy's going to need someone(s) who will be patient with her at the start and slowly integrate her into their lives. Today she was playing outside and inside like a pup - she needs a bit of work on that retrieving thing. She has a couple of toys that she's beginning to share with us but doesn't appear to have the need to carry something around with her. Not sure if she's a velcro GR yet as she's still keeping an arms length away and is just beginning coming up to us to be petted and praised. We'll learn much more about Sammy in the upcoming days - her previous owners said she likes the water but we might have to wait a couple of months to find out.

Sammy/Samwise/Sam-Sam/Sam I Am/I am Sam/Sam AM I has found her new furever family, the L family in Mpls. Sammy likes her new home a lot and thanks everyone who wanted to know more about her.

We thank Sammy for the opportunity to watch her transformation the last few weeks - she's truly an awesome GR who won over everyone she met.

We will definitely miss her.

Samwise #09-062 also known as Sam, Sammy, Sam-Sam, Sam I Am and I am Sam, is truly a remarkable GR! We've had Sammy for a couple of weeks and she is a real sweety who has re-discovered her GR trademark traits while bringing fun and laughter to all she meets. Sam-Sam has a wonderful mellow personality that allows you to cuddle up next to her on those cold nights, and then go play in the snow like a puppy. Sammy's a super GR who has taught us how to develop trust with each other and then spread the trust with patience to others. Sammy loves to walk anywhere and has lost about 5 lbs. already in spite of the many well-earned treats she has received!

We all wish that there would be many more Sammy's that are looking for their "furever home" (I borrowed these words from another RAGOM volunteer - I just love it!), and it looks like Samwise has found her new family. Sammy thanks everyone who has asked to meet her, and it's very difficult to choose as every adoptive family and persons are just great folks with big hearts. We thank everyone for choosing adoption avenues such as RAGOM, and it's difficult to explain in words what it means to all of us. Perhaps it's best said thru the foster dog's pictures and bio's. Don't get discouraged and please keep checking this web site as there's likely to be another Samwise who needs you to be their lifeline.

Samwise 09-062 aka "Sammy" is a 3 year old spayed female GR sweety who is mellow in the house and loves to play outside in the snow or whatever there may be outside. Sammy has a bit of laid back attitude when she's inside and loves to be around the house somewhere as long as it's not too far from her foster parents. Sammy is starting to eat better and increasingly shows more of her GR traits such as dropping a stuffed toy at your feet to share with you then gives you that little nose nudge which means "let's play". Sammy continues to have full roam of the house and she has been a perfect lady who you can cuddle with on these cold winter nights.

Sammy loves being outdoors and loves to explore the scents as she's got a keen nose or if this isn't enough she sticks her head right into the snow to get a better sniff. She walks great on a retractable leash with an occasional tug and hasn't been too bad about wrapping up all of us by taking the opposite side of a tree. We have not heard Sammy bark at all but then there's not too much to bark at in late February. She does give an occasional growl at something unknown and unseen during our evening walks and she continues on her way. Sammy does all her duties outside in the woods and if it's real cold she'll let you know when she wants to go back inside, which is fine by us.

Sammy has had some allergy problems in the past but so far we really haven't seen that since she's been here. She is on one pill a day mainly for preventive reasons and we'll continue to watch this. Sammy does shed somewhat but it seems less than our previous GR's which is a good thing. She doesn't seem to overly lick or scratch herself and doesn't really roll in the snow as much as other GR's do.

Sammy's personality continues to show and she wins our hearts over and over. Her quiet personality will fit well with an environment that's not overly hectic or loud, and probably one where Sammy is the only dog as she tends to shy away when other dogs are in the home. Sammy will likely not need a fenced yard as she seems to mind the boundaries set for her, but may need to be watched when she's outside. Sammy takes a bit to warm up to persons she has just met and has made great progress from her timidness we first saw. Sammy's not a velcro GR but is right there besides you if want to pet her, or if you need Sammy to lend a ear to and relax with after a hectic day. Sammy is very good with children of all ages and loves to play with other dogs. Sammy really is a sweety who needs to find her new furever home.

Samwise 09-062 aka Sammy continues to show us that she is a great GR! Sammy loves her walks, being outside, playing with her toys and is adapting very well in her new foster home. Sammy has made great friends with the neighborhood dogs and can't wait to go out and walk about a mile to see them, where they play like pups. Sammy has become much better when greeting new people but will stand besides you until she is sure about the situation. She now allows herself to be petted and praised by folks she has just met as long as it's ok with the Foster Parent to do so. Sammy does love to dive into the snow chasing some unknown something, and we've seen her dig in the snow and we're not sure if she'll do the same on unfrozen land - it's something we'll need to keep watch on.
Sammy is a "high road" explorer with a very sharp nose and doesn't seem to mind going thru deep snow to see what lies ahead. We spent some time today on the frozen lake and she seemed to enjoy the experience. Sammy continues to be great inside where she has full roam and we've had no problems at all. Sammy curls into a little ball to lay on your feet or bedside and with a quick nose nudge she reminds you that she's still there and likes receiving praise and petting and the occasional treat. Sammy loves to ride shotgun in the truck and most of the time sits up like a person looking out the window. Her next move is to somehow fit in the seat with her head by your right elbow which is a very convenient position for her to receive more petting and praise.
We're still dialing in Sammy's food which is a low allergen diet and she had been eating better. She does have some dandruff type flakes but they seem to be lessening and we'll closely watch this as she'll be getting her bath this weekend. Sammy likes being groomed so much that she's fallen asleep a couple of times during her grooming.....she must be really relaxed!
Sammy will probably do best in a home where she can receive some extra attention to build her confidence a bit as we've got her to play and such with gentle prodding and praise. Sammy does like to have a kinda routine for things she does including when she goes outside, a preferred way to eat her food - perhaps being orderly fits her personality. Sammy and us are headed outside as there's new snow falling and who doesn't like playing in the snow! Thanks for looking at Sammy's bio and if you are interested in receiving more info on Sammy or another RAGOM GR please email to placementatragom [dot] org.
