Sassy 06-211

Profile

5/29/06: Sassy is a 7 year old, spayed purebred Golden, medium gold in color with a white face. She really is a sweet girl, and has a very playful spirit for an "older" dog. She walks amazingly well on leash with a Gentle Leader, is very trustworthy with free reign of the house, doesn't chew anything inappropriate, and loves her toys. Sassy came to RAGOM from a loving family that travels a lot and lives part of the year in a place that doesn't allow dogs, so they wanted better for her. Sassy has been to the vet and is up to date on shots.

Unfortunately Sassy and my resident dog didn't hit it off. Due to our shortage of foster homes, she had to go to temporary boarding :( until we can find her a new foster home. Note that I do NOT blame Sassy entirely for the conflict between the 2 of them, but it was creating stress for all of us, and they didn't appear to be "working it out". The good news is that, while she was definitely a bit "sassy" with my dog, there were never any fights or bites, just a lot of growly warnings. If you're like me, and not a dog behavior expert, you might not realize that growling is considered to be using "good communication skills", the dog world equivalent of "using your words" instead of getting physical.

So, I have no doubt that with the right family -- certainly as an only-dog, and maybe even in a multi-dog household (I'll leave that determination up to the behavior experts) -- Sassy will be a wonderful addition to a loving family. She is used to being in a fairly calm environment where she gets a lot of human attention. She loves being a part of family activities, riding in the car, playing with her stuffed hedgehog, rolling around in the grass and loves loves loves the water!!! (Sorry she is wet in all the pictures I took, but it has been HOT in Minneapolis!)

More soon on this sweet girl with a sassy side...

Time for a new update! The Sassy girl has come a long way in the past week… she is definitely feeling at home here and she and her foster brother have “worked through any issues” and are in a good groove (they are both laying at my feet under the desk together… never thought I’d see that a few weeks ago!). Sass continues to be fun, playful and full of spunk, but we see very little diva attitude these days. An occasional “you’re bugging me” from Sassy and a “whatever…” from Mason and then they go play some more. Needless to say, I am no longer convinced she needs to be an “only-dog”, although I know she’d still love to have all the attention to herself.

More and more, I think Sassy is the ideal “middle-aged” Golden… she’s very active, loves her walks and playtime, but also happily entertains herself with toys and sticks in the yard. She loves her pets and belly rubs and actually purrs like a kitten, but also is content to take a little cat nap between activities. She sleeps through the night without a peep and I don’t think she’s ever asked to go outside for potty (although my yard is fenced so I let them out often), and never any accidents or bad behavior when left at home alone. She has free reign of the house and nothing has ever been disturbed. The only bad habit I can think of… which really doesn’t even count as BAD… is that once in a while she will pick up one of my shoes that I leave by the back door and “hide” it from me. Usually she just carries it into another room, no doubt so she can laugh at me while I look for it. Sometimes she’ll hide it under her blankie (which she also drags around with her) but she doesn’t chew them or even slobber them up… and she always only moves ONE, never the pair.

Truthfully, I’m surprised this girl is still around… she is at that perfect age for the family who wants an active dog but none of the trials and tribulations of the puppy or adolescent years. I know that 4-6 is a popular age group, but I wouldn’t rule this one out b/c she is 7. She has the energy of a 4 year old and the disposition of a 7-year old, which is a GREAT combination in my book! Plus she just turned seven in April!

She’s a very sweet, happy, healthy, spunky girl who has been well loved and has had a good life thus far. My job is to make sure the best is yet to come!!! Sassy will be at PetCo this weekend if you’re interested in meeting her… but if you REALLY want to meet her, email placementatragom [dot] org to make sure she isn’t already spoken for by the weekend.

Sassy is back!!! We couldn't bear the thought of her being in a kennel so we had a behavior consult (thanks Linda!) and now we're good to go. No more "unavailable" status... she's looking for her very own forever home!!!

So, what did we learn? Turns out Sassy's name is fitting... she is NOT an aggressive dog, but perhaps a little "set in her ways" and maybe even a bit "full of herself" at times. Think "Princess Sassafrass", an only-child who has always gotten her way, never had to share her parents' attention, and is suddenly thrown into a new situation with a new foster mom and an immature younger brother... all at the age of 49 (in dog years, of course). So, we're working on an attitude adjustment, and so far it's going very well. Sassy gets lot of attention (which is what she wants!) when she is "nice" to her foster brother, and not so much when she is "in one of her moods". Hey, sometimes we all need a time-out.

So now I've painted this total prima donna picture of her, but that's not entirely right either... (can you blame a girl for being complex?)... Princess Sassafrass LOVES to play with other dogs (even the dreaded foster brother!), and in fact they play really well together, no snapping and growling whatsoever during play time, and "very appropriate signals" from both dogs, according to the expert. She can drop the diva act and within seconds be acting like a 2-year old herself, with the moves and everything! No "senior" couch potato here.

If you're looking for a "sophisticated" older girl who is young at heart, has a lot of personality and a zest for life, and yet the manners and calm nature of an older dog, she just might be the girl for you! From what I know so far, Sassy does well with kids, but also appreciates her quiet time, so she'd probably do better with older kids. Lastly, if you don't have another dog, but want a social butterfly who can hang out at the dog park and make friends, but come home and have the family all to herself, you just might be exactly what she's looking for. I know her ideal family is out there! Let placementatragom [dot] org know if you'd like to meet this little princess.
