Scarlet arrived in our home last night, late. There were ice storms near Chicago that made transport difficult. She came up from Kentucky near the West Virginia border. It turned out to be a challenging transport. When we took a short walk before bedtime she was intrigued by all the snow. It was interesting to put her nose into and even for a little rolling around. But after a while it made her feet cold. I think that she was wondering just, exactly, what she had gotten herself into by coming to Minnesota.
She went right into a crate to go to sleep and, after a couple of little "peeps" we didn't hear anything else from her until morning.
Scarlet is a mixed-breed; she looks mostly Golden but has a small build, some white on both back paws and a white spot on her chest. But, so far, she is all Golden in her desire to please and be loved by people. Once she settles into her new surroundings she will be a "foot warmer" for sure. She wants to be near if not actually touching someone whenever possible.
On a sad note, Scarlet has obviously recently given birth to a litter. She was in the Kentucky shelter as a stray and no amount of searching on the part of the shelter staff or concerned rescuers ever found the puppies. Her milk appears to be drying up so we are hopeful that the pups were weaned and were able to survive on their own.
We took Scarlet to our Veterinarian today to bring her up to date with treatment and to have her thoroughly checked. Someone at the shelter in KY guessed her weight to be 60 pounds but she is nowhere near that heavy. She's a slight little thing. The scale at our Vet said 33 pounds. She was given shots, prodded, chipped, examined from stem to stern and even with all that, every time the Vet walked into the examining room he got a tail wag from Scarlet. He thinks that she is 2 years old and she's healthy; a little regimen of good, regular, food and she'll be in the peak of health.
She's mellow, cute as a bug's ear and a complete sweetheart.
