Sebastian 07-087

Profile

3/4/07: Sebastian was found as a stray and when he was turned over to Whipstaff Rescue in Northern Minnesota, he had about 4# of very old, worn chain attached to his collar. The staff at Whipstaff provided background information that Seb didn't appear to have any health issues, his teeth were in good condition, he was slightly underweight, he got along fine with other dogs and ignored cats. They also said that he was extremely timid and had probably been abused.

This morning, I met Seb, a beautiful Golden Retriever/Shepherd mix, and although he cowered in fear when we approached him in his outdoor kennel, he did fine during the basic evaluation. I fitted him with a bright red collar (for courage) and RAGOM ID, and then told him how lucky we were to be starting his journey to a new Golden life together. He wasn't crazy about being leashed, but we finally made it to the van where he just flat dug in. Finally, we lifted his 60# or so aboard and away we went.

When we got home, I was pleasantly surprised when Seb found a bush and a snowbank to do what came naturally. And every time we go outside, same (poor) bush and same snowbank.  Good boy!

This afternoon, I found out that Seb is food motivated so he's been easy to lure with offers of dried liver and cheddar cheese. It's very funny to see him stretch out his whole body so he doesn't have to get too close to take his treat...then he gets lots of praise for being so brave. The resident dogs are in heaven because they're included in this "get in line and sit for free food" extravaganza...little do they know (or care)that they're playing a part in re-teaching Seb to trust his people.

Tomorrow, I hope to see Seb wag his tail. This is how we start...little step by little step.

Sebastian died last Wednesday of bloat complications at the age of 8. We only had Sebastian for 7 months, but during that time we had seen a significant change in him for the better. He loved to play fetch and roll in the snow. He always was excited to greet the kids in the neighborhood.

He was a wonderful dog and a good friend. Sebastian - You will be missed!

Hi Everyone,

I am starting to do much better in my foster home.  I am eating better and I have put on some weight.  As you can see by my new pictures I am doing well with the baby and my foster siblings.  More than anything I want to be in a loving home that will be patient with me.  It may take me a while to warm up to you, but once I do, watch out!  I also don't mind the cats here, even the one that hisses at me all of the time, I just ignore her.

I love to be outside and go for walks. I get a little anxious and sometimes I pull, but my foster parents are trying to teach me.  I am go to the vet this week for a follow up, I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks for checking me out. Come back soon!

Sebastian has come back to RAGOM in hopes to find him a home that would be a better fit for him. Sebie is a very affectionate and gentle dog. He is skittish in new situations but warms up quickly. He is doing very well in his foster home. He is enjoying our two resident dogs. He pays little attention to the cats and has no problem with our 6 month old son. Sebie is not available for adoption at this time. He needs to gain some weight and we want to make sure he is in tip top condition before he goes to his forever home. Please check back on Sebastian's story as he will undoubtedly have something to say.

Hi All,
Sebastian is doing well during this transition.  He is still reserved with males, but does well with cats, dogs and females.  He is non agressive and will warm up quickly to males. We went to the vet today and all is well.  Then Sebastian went to his foster grandma's to run in the yard and play with his new dog friends.  He loves his rawhide, his teddy bear and taking us for a walk.  His appetite has been lacking, which may be due to nerves.  He ate from my hand today so hopefully we are getting better.  Sebastian is skittish about loud noises and paces when he is nervous.

Sebie is like a completely different dog this week.He is definitely feeling 100% better. He has a lot more energy and a better appetite. He even jumped up on our couch for some love. He kept burying his face into my arms so I had to pet him. It was so adorable. He learns very quickly from our other dogs. He hasn’t had any accidents in our house except for the first day we got him. His swelling from the neuter went down drastically. He is only on 1 medication and will be off that in about a week. Last night when we went to bed, we tried gating him in the kitchen instead of our laundry room because he feels better. He started to whine and whimper for us. Then after about 5 minutes he started to bark very quietly. This is the first time he has made any noise. It was really cute. He loves being around people. He eventually stopped and slept all night just fine. He is not aggressive with food or toys with our other dogs at all. We haven’t had him around children yet but I’m sure he would be fine with them because he is very laid back when it comes to other people and dogs. He is timid at first but then warms up quickly. He saw his reflection today on the TV and a mirror and started growling at it. That was pretty funny. He wags his tail all the time now so that is good to see.He is going to make a family very happy…I wouldn’t pass this guy up!

Sebie is doing a lot better. We were supposed to get his tubes out yesterday. However, we took him to the vet and they said they were still leaking too much fluid so we have to wait another three days. They shaved him underneath because they said his hair was getting in the way. I was really excited to get the tubes out so we could start working on getting him more socialized.

I am happy to announce that Sebie stood up all by himself with the E collar on this morning and wagged his tail. That is the first time he has moved and wagged his tail with the collar on. He still shakes when it is on but not as bad as he was. He has a lot more energy and finally has an appetite. He is feeling much better. We are still giving him his medications. I cannot say enough how much of a sweetie Sebie is. He gets along great with our other two dogs. He comes to us now and seems a lot more alert. We are looking forward to seeing Sebie continue to progress. He is a beautiful dog with black and golden markings. He is long and lanky and could gain a few pounds. Sebie would make someone a wonderful companion.
