2/23/06: Shadow has arrived in Marion, Iowa! He was relinquished by his owner who could not keep him when he moved. Shadow is a big, beautiful light colored Golden that is possibly a mix - but all Golden in personality. He is about 7 years old and will be neutered and up to date as of tomorrow. He's had a bath and been brushed and looks so nice! He didn't want his toenails clipped so we'll ask the vet to do that while he is under for his neuter.

Shadow is really well mannered. He met all four of our resident dogs and handled that stress like a trooper. No growling, no big deal. He is good with my kids thus far and very much enjoys treats. He sits, shakes, speaks and lays down on command. He'll give you a big sloppy kiss if you ask!! He doesn't appear to care much for his name at this point. In the backyard, he ignored me when I called him. He slept very quietly in his crate last night and has gone for two long walks. He is good on the lead except he marks everything he sees. He is strong, so when he wants to "go" he pulls. Other than that, it appears he's spent some time on the leash. He played outside in the yard this morning for over an hour with the other dogs and they played an intense game of peekaboo, pee on a tree, peekaboo, pee on a tree. They were all too funny. When he had enough and wanted to come in, he barked at the door. Very smart!

Shadow appears to have some soreness and stiffness in his hind legs. It is most notable when he is coming up the steps. I'll ask the vet about that tomorrow. Otherwise, he is handsome, sweet and will be ready for his forever home very soon.

Well, the poor guy did not get adopted. Not only that, he had to have a tooth pulled. And not only that, he had to go to the groomers.

But look at him NOW! He's a giant ball of fluff and gorgeous! And his pearlies are so white! He was sooooo sad last night after coming home from the vet. He sat at my feet and gave these little whimpers of pain and I could have just died! He was much better this morning, and now after his spa day, he's better than ever. Here are a couple of photos showing off his fluffy blond coat, as well as a
shot with him and his fellow sun worshippers enjoying the day! (Notice that even Bismarck 07-194 on the right, is out and about--he's gradually crawling out of his puppy mill shell!)

With all the nice weather the last few days, it was time to get the hammock out of storage. Once it was set up, seemed to remember it from last summer. When my neighbor (Shadow's godfather who has taken such good care of him when I have long days) flopped down in the hammock for a trial run,
Shadow jumped right in there with him! He's ready for summer! Before that, however, he gets to meet a prospective adopter tonight (yea!), then a tooth extraction tomorrow (yikes!), and a grooming session on Friday (yippee!) He'll be even more good looking for the weekend! And maybe he'll even score a permanent home by then!

Shadow's still working on that stick! (See picture.) That thing has provided entertainment for quite a while now... We also got a cute picture of him with his foster buddy, the ND puppy mill guy, Bismarck 07-194. They're kind of a good looking couple! Shadow's lick granuloma is looking much better, thanks to the antibiotics. He's waiting to hear about when he gets his tooth pulled, but we just don't talk about that much. The good thing is that he'll get the canned food after something like that--and he LOVES the canned food! He's waiting to meet a prospective family with hopes he might find a permanent home!

Shadow's looking forward to going to Petsmart tomorrow. All the focus this past week has been on the poor guy who just blew in from North Dakota, so Shadow is looking forward to scoring all the pets he can out in Plymouth! He had a bath this week, but wouldn't let me brush him out completely, but he's looking good and fluffy. Come and meet him!

Shadow guarding a valuable treasure!Shadow waiting patiently for his new home.

Monday, January 15, 2007

Shadow LOVES the snow this morning! He was happy as a clam, romping around the yard with the two resident dogs, when he got out the door this morning. As you can see from the attached photos, he is still waiting patiently (mostly on the couch) for his new home. Occasionally, he moves to the floor, where you see him stretched out next to the buffet, in his favorite "long-term" waiting pose. And I managed to capture him doing "his trick," when he sits up and begs, which is just adorable and somewhat impressive for such a big guy. We're going to the dog park today and I'm sure he'll have a blast. He's ready for a date if you want to meet him!

Not much new to report here from Shadow's end. He had a date to go to the PetCo event in Woodbury last weekend and he had a ball! Of course, he had a nice lady and three lovely girls to accompany him. He even got to enter the pet trick contest and show how he can sit up and beg--quite a thing for a big guy with not great hips! He had so much fun, and was exhausted when he got home. There was a family that seemed to be interested in him, and he was SOOOOO hoping that someone might want to take him home for good, but he's still stuck here in his foster home--which isn't all that bad. He's lost weight since he'e been here, he's almost looking trim. He's gotten SO much better with his "guarding issues"-in fact, he's begun tossing the Kong around to get someone to play with him. Everyone who comes to visit loves him--he's better behaved than the resident dogs. Too bad none of the visitors are looking for a canine pal. He's a great boy, and he'd be a great companion. If you're interested, zap an e-mail to placementatragom [dot] org!

Shadow just spent a week up in the northwoods and he was AWESOME! He got to free roam on the farmstead, chase the chattering red squirrels, listen to the wolves howling, go swimming in Lake Vermillion. He had a blast! He was SUCH a good dog--stuck close by the house with the other dogs, went swimming for the first time since I have had him, and was a GREAT travel partner in the car. (Well, he LOVES going in any car, even if it isn't mine, but for a 4+ hour car ride, he was fabulous!) I think he's actually dropped a few pounds since coming here, which is good for his hips, and the exercise he got this week was great for him. It was so fun to watch him lope across the hayfield with the other dogs, as well as to watch him spring into action-figure mode when Gus (the resident squirrel hunter) sounded the red alert. There were two awesome moments around his guarding stuff (which has really decreased in both frequency and intensity over the past few months). The first occurred one night after all the dogs were totally pooped out. Shadow had the tennis ball which was sitting on the arm of the armchair that he was sitting in. Moe, the other resident, walked over and simply picked up the tennis ball and walked off with it. Not a peep! (In fact, Shadow has never been terribly concerned about guarding from other dogs-- a little growl here and there, but no big show. But for as brazen as Moe was, I was just thrilled with Shadow for his non-response!) The second moment occurred when we were having a barbecue with the neighbors. Shadow had found an old, well chewed by many dogs, deer bone in the woods on their property, and he dragged it over near the grill and sat down near us to chew on it. When the hostess started walking towards him to pet him, I was just about to give her a warning, but Shadow just looked up at her and wagged his tail--again, not a peep, no incident. I was so proud of him! All three of the dogs got a bath Friday morning, and Shadow did just fine with that (another first since he's been here). That night, we had a picnic on Lake Vermillion with yet another dog, and Shadow did fine with this somewhat feisty Ridgeback. My two, having just totally dried out from their afternoon baths, were in the lake within 30 seconds. Shadow joined them and seemed to love going for a little swim. Also, there was tremendous tennis ball action going on during the swimming and we had NO controversy over who the balls belonged to! He slept in the car most of the way back. We stopped to visit at another farm near Cloquet, and he stuck around, and was very well-behaved while we visited in the house. In fact, when we were leaving, he didn't want to go. He parked himself in the big farm kitchen and seemed to be saying "This house needs a dog." He was totally pooped out last night. This morning I brushed him, and he again was such a good boy--no resistance, even though he had quite a few tangles that would have made me crabby if I were him. I am just so happy at how Shadow has settled in as he has gotten more trusting. Nearly everyone who meets him develops a crush on him. He needs a home with someone who is dog savvy, who won't be ruffled by his occasional growling incidents (note: he has never snapped, ever, at me or the other dogs; he's very polite about giving his warning signals), who wants a big mountain of happy dog who will stick right by your side, who LOVES walks, rides in the car, chasing sticks. He gets along fine with other dogs, has a little too much interest in cats (but again, he's never gone after the cat). He gets along great with my two dogs, and is just a delightful love muffin of a dog! And smart and good-looking! What a package! Call now!

Shadow was SPRUNG from the kennel earlier this week after two months of concrete floors, which can't have helped his hips. He is just as he has been described below, a big bold cream puff of a guy. He's a really happy boy, LOVES to ride in the car and go for walks, and is really a good dog. He has gotten along well with my two Goldens. He does want to chase the cat, but the cat is very dog savvy, so we are working together (the cat and I) to teach him that game is not such a good one. Shadow spent the first night in the crate and did just fine. The next couple of nights, he slept upstairs with the rest of us (although I gated the stairs so he couldn't come down for a midnight cat treat), but last night, I skipped the gate and he slept by the side of the bed all night. He's had free roam of the house with my other guys and there has been no problem. (He does like the couch, but that's sort of the status quo here.)

As indicated below, Shadow's issue is his guarding of bones and perhaps other toys. He doesn't guard his food from me or the other dogs; that isn't an issue for him at all. We have had one incident with a Nylabone where I got a growl, so I just put it away. No problem! I did let him have it when he was in his crate, but for now, all bones and rawhides have been put away. This morning, we had a little test with a tennis ball, and he did fine. I am going to be working with him on this little issue, which I think is totally solvable; he's very smart, he can sit, speak, shake, lay down, and is very obedient, and knows when he has crossed a line, so I think he is very trainable. For now, he's looking for a home with no kids (just because of this issue) with someone who is willing to work on this and take him to obedience classes. He's a very easy guy, and super sweet. He also does this adorable "happy dance" when he thinks we're going somewhere, or when he comes back in the house from outside. I think he's just thrilled to be in a household again, the big love!

Shadow has been doing very well overall in our home. He enjoys his daily walks and his time outside. He listens to my children read to him and has been allowed free roam of the house at night. He doesn't chew on anything he isn't supposed to and is eating better now.

Unfortunately, he has over the course of the last few days been growling at me and my husband and the other dogs. He doesn't seem to be too keen on being asked to do certain things and does appear to have some resource guarding issues going on. He very well could be overwhelmed with my four dogs and three kids since he isn't used to living in such a busy environment. I am trying to set up some time to have him assessed further to determine how we can best help him.
