Shadow 08-111

Profile

Allow me to introduce my friend Shadow!

Shadow is a 9 year old male Black Lab/Golden Retriever mix that weighs 70 pounds. He has been at our home for the last 6 days and we have been getting to know each other.

The first thing I'd like to say about Shadow is that he is a real gentleman. His manners are awesome! He waits before going through the door, waits to be invited on the furniture, walks like a dream on a leash, and knows some basic commands like sit and stay. He does not beg at the table, jump up on people, or counter surf. Why is this dog in rescue you ask? His family had to move into an apartment and Shadow and his mom Lacee 08-110 could not go. You can see the family resemblance in their pictures. Shadow is good with our 2 resident female dogs and ignores our cat. He has been around children as young as 6 here at our house and has been his usual mellow self.

Shadow loves to snuggle. He is typical of a golden retriever in that he wants to be where the people are. He is up to date on all of his shots, his teeth look great and overall, is in good health.

Shadow is looking for his forever home. I believe he will be happy in a home either with or without other dogs.

Updates

Hello everyone!

Just checking in to post an update for Shadow. There's nothing new really to report but we just want to say hello, post a couple of new pictures, and let every one know that he continues to do well. Shadow lives up to his name. He is my shadow and companion. I may have mentined this in an earlier update but it's worth mentioning again. I have never met a more devoted dog. He is always by my side and gives me adoring looks that make me want to become the person he thinks I am. A more agreeable dog is not to be found! If you would like to meet this charming chap, please contact placementatragom [dot] org

PS. We thought we had found a home for Shadow but unfortunately we were not able to set up a time to get together. If you had been previously interested in Shadow but were told that he was out to a family, know that he is now open to meeting approved applicants again.

Hello All,

Here's Shadow wishing everyone a Happy Mothers Day! It wasn't quite warm but the sunshine felt marvelous. Shadow has had a nice relaxing week and we hope everyone else did too. We made Banana Rama Kong treats yesterday and learned that Shadow likes bananas mixed with wheat germ and yogurt. Yum Yum!

He is my friend and constant companion. Are you looking for a dog that will be your shadow? Look no further. He's right here in Burnsville! Enjoy the new pictures!

Shadow had a good time at Chuck and Don's this past Saturday. He got lots of pats on the head from lots of different people and was very well behaved. He was the only black dog among many golden retrievers and I have to admit, I was proud to be with him. He is wonderful company and is such a loyal dog. We fed him several ginger snap cookies (the ones with REAL ginger in them) before the car ride and he did not throw up! I was happy for him. We may have found the answer to his car sickness but will need to test it some more before being certain of it. We learned that Shadow is not afraid of storms. We had a storm here a few days ago and Shadow's foster sister was afraid but he was not.

I wanted to tell a short story about a day last week when I was walking Shadow and his 2 foster sisters. We were accosted by a loose dog. It came charging up to us barking, growling and its hair standing on end. The 2 girl dogs and I were frightened, but not Shadow. Shadow, retaining his cool demeanor, just lowered his head and walked straight for the loose dog. If Shadow could talk I certain he would have said "Don't worry. I'll take care of this." The dog ran off when Shadow headed toward him and so Shadow returned to my side. Shadow's body language alone was enough to deter the loose dog. He protected us!

I have always felt safer with Shadow around and even more so now. I think I mentioned in an earlier update how deep his bark is. When someone comes to the door and Shadow barks, my goodness it sounds like the walls are going to fall down. His bark has alot of depth to it. He is right beside me as I type this. Whoever adopts this dog is going to be very blessed indeed. It's going to be hard to let him go but he deserves his own family who will dote on him and make him #1. He has been with us for almost 8 weeks now. He is welcome to remain with us as long as it takes to find his forever home. We so enjoy his company.

Hello all!

Shadow has been with us for 4 weeks now and he continues to be a wonderful house guest. Such a gentleman! He has not had a single accident in the house and he has not harmed anything. He's completely trustworthy. He does not beg, counter surf, dumpster dive (even when the garbage can is accessable) or jump up on people. He does not get onto the furniture or bed our unless I prompt him to. He's even nice to the cat! At first I thought Shadow only tolerated or ignored Tiger the cat, but Tiger would not allow himself to be ignored. Tiger purposefully rubs himself on Shadow's nose, under his chin, and licks Shadow's mouth. Shadow does not react at all. It's like they've been pals all along.

I took Shadow to the vet this past week to get a Bordatella booster, heartworm tablet and a Frontline application. We learned while we were there that Shadow has gained 5 pounds! My goodness! I had better watch how much I'm feeding him! He's up to 75 pounds now but I'm hoping to get him back to 70 pounds. He's not a picky eater although that's probably obvious.

Shadow's coat is super soft and shiny. I don't think his pictures show just how shiny he is. His ears are wonderfully soft too. He does not have a coat as long as a golden retriever but it is longer than a labs. Overall, it is easy to care for and does not snarl.

Shadow does need to learn one thing. He needs to learn how to use the stairs. He will not go down the stairs to our basement. I have had foster dogs in the past who had to learn to use the stairs so I know it's not terribly uncommon. They usually learn pretty quickly.

He's a dog that wants to be in the company of his people. He likes to be in the same room that I am. He's gr-reat company. When I'm at the computer, he often sits right beside me and leans on me.

He's healthy and up to date on all of his shots. If you are an approved applicant and would like to meet Shadow, please contact placementatragom [dot] org

Hello everyone!

I want to give a quick update on Shadow.

He has been with us for 3 weeks now and continues to be a wonderful house guest. He and I were playing fetch recently and I can tell that he has played this game before! He energetically chases the ball, brings it back and drops it at my feet. Wow! I wish he would teach my dogs how to return and release the ball. My dogs think the game of fetch means "keep-away-from-Mom"!

We have realized that Shadow gets car sick on occasion. I recently brought him with me to St. Paul, about a 30 minute drive away, and he threw up just as we were arriving. Good thing foster mom is prepared for these things! I had a blanket on the car seat and a baggie for quick clean up. His paperwork shows that he also threw up on his long ride to the Twin Cities from his hometown in Wisconsin. It seems to be the long distances that he does not do well with. Our quick 10 minute drive to vet has not caused him any trouble. All said, it is a minor thing but significant if someone wanted to adopt him for a traveling buddy.

Shadow enjoyed making snow angels in the snow while it was here but we are also looking forward to the warmer temperatures of spring and longer walks! He's so pleasant to walk with! A sniff here, and sniff there but always alert to what's going on around us.

More to follow later! If you would like to meet this fellow, please contact placementatragom [dot] org

Shadow went to the vet yesterday to have a fecal check (which was negative) and to be microchipped. Dr. T remarked on what good health this dog is in and said he can hardly believe that Shadow is 9. Shadow is at his ideal weight and very little tartar on his teeth. He has no known health issues and was a good boy at the vet's office. He was friendly and tolerant.

Shadow has free roam of the house during the day when we're at work, along with our 2 resident dogs. He is completely housebroken and has not had a single accident.

Shadow's original family allowed him free roam outside. I didn't think I would ever say this about one of my foster dogs, but I think he'd be okay without a fence. He enjoys rawhide bones and really enjoys his walks. He makes me smile when we walk because he looks like he struts. He has a bounce in his step and carries his head and tail high. If you are looking for a companion to accompany you on nice walks through the park, here is your guy. He will be by your side day and night. He has a deep, masculine bark, quite different from our female dogs.

We have really enjoyed having him at our home as he is very easy to have around. He sleeps on the floor on the side of our bed but will jump right in bed with us in a second if invited. He is ready for his forever home.
