Shadow was picked up from a shelter last Saturday where he had been waiting for weeks for someone to claim him. What a great dog! Since he was such a good boy, some of the shelter staff had taken him home for overnights. He was reported to be great with kids, cats, and other dogs. I have to agree with everyone that Shadow gets along well with all. He has obviously been well trained in most areas. He takes treats very gently. He rides in the car like a perfect gentleman.
We took a walk along the lakewalk in Duluth, and Shadow was not at all phased by bicycles, rollerblades, or other dogs racing by. He sat right down in Lake Superior and declared the water temperature to be just about perfect. The one thing Shadow needs to learn is not to pull on the leash! He likes to show off his strength, I guess, because he is so laid back other wise.I will be working with him using the Gentle Leader collar and soon he will be perfect!
We all wish Shadow could tell us about his past. He understands sit, come, and wait/stay. He appears to be housetrained, but wants to be outside a lot. He was either trained to stay in certain parts of the house or else is afraid to snoop around. It took four days to get him to come to the lower level. He chose his own sleeping spot by the patio doors. He does not chew on anything, except the rawhides he gets. No countercruising. No resource guarding.
Shadow saw the vet today and he is in good health, UTD, and neutered. He is about six years old and weighs 88 pounds. He does need to lose some weight, so he will need a home where he is fed high quality dog food, measured out, so he can't overindulge. He loves to play ball, but doesn't play for a long time. I think he would love to have someone to take him to a dog park so he can run or amble along at his own pace. As he gets a bit more settled, I can tell a little more about him. For now, he is sure an easy guy to live with!
