Profile
This lovely gal has settled into the most loving and delightful companion. After 2 weeks with me I don't see the anxiety issues, although there has not been a storm. Firecrackers caused her to become nervous and stick very close to me, but as soon as it was quiet, so was she. When she encounters a new experience, she pants, but stops as soon as she realizes everything is cool. She even went along through a car wash and was curious, craning her neck to watch the process. I wonder if she became anxious left in a cage during storms or for long periods by herself. The vet says her teeth have been worn down and perhaps have a crack or two from chewing the cage.
Shelby does not need a cage. She loves car rides and sits in the back like a regal lady. She was tethered to the bed the first few nights...not a peep. Had to wake her one morning to get up for work. I have left her for 2+ hours free roam in the house and no problems. Shelby does not like to be alone and follows closely from room to room. She enjoys the kitties and respects the baby gate. Other dogs are very interesting to her. She wants to sniff and be friends.
From Shelby:
Yesterday on our walk I met the most handsome Golden named Riley. He is a PIN-UP boy...that's how gorgeous, and a RAGOM calendar star. I sure hope we run into him again. Speaking of dogs. I sure have met lots. It is fun to say hello with a good sniff. I played with 2 Jack Russell's...happy when FM took me home...I was pooped.
Our week at the cabin was wonderful. I went to Lake Superior and can you imagine...FM threw a stick into the water, I guess she expected me to get wet and retrieve it. No way am I going in any deeper than my paws. I'm not a fish. But I loved walking the beach every day. One day I saw a deer. I am so happy being a RAGOM dog. I'm not worried about anything now, except when I get the next treat. Life is good.
Shelby update from FM:
Shelby is a true companion. She loves being with humans and has blossomed into a loving, happy Golden. Today she even retrieved a tennis ball 2 times. She is so gentle and allows icky things like tinfoil to be removed from her mouth without any fuss and loves to be scratched, rubbed and groomed all over. She is sitting for longer periods and we are working on stay. If a treat is held in the fingers she grabs for it, but if held on a flat outstretched hand takes it ever so gently. She would be a safe and loving dog with children. But a rowdy household might bring on some nervousness. She has really calmed down being in a relaxed atmosphere.
She prefers to do her business off leash and so a fenced yard would be ideal. She does not run, comes when called, but does not want to be outside on the tether without a human nearby. She will sit in the screen porch and look through the door and seems happy as long as she feels there are humans in the vicinity.
Shelby weighed a full-figured 81 pounds 2 weeks ago. She now is trim looking from all the serious walking we've done. She loves to walk and has a spirited gait with her tail wagging and head up, ears perked. She is enthusiastic about life and some family will be so lucky to be her forever family.
Shelby says:
I had such fun with the kong...there was a treat inside and I worked at it for a long time, but finally got it out. FM gave me a new chewie rope toy which is fun to toss around, but I love the fuzzy squeeky toys best. FM says they have to go into the washing machine soon. Guess I'll have to hide them so she can't find them.
Off to the cabin today after work...yea, good times up north.
