8/9/06: "Reddi" is a calm, petite, 45-pound, dark red unspayed female who is approximately one year-old. She turned up as a stray at a farm just before the 4th of July, and was connected with a woman who was looking for a Golden Retriever to train as a service dog for herself. It turns out that Reddi was too small/short to act a service dog for the woman, so she contacted RAGOM to find her a good home.

Unfortunately, Reddi tested positive for Heartworm and has not yet begun her treatment. I will be verifying the information with one of RAGOM's vets, hopefully this week; she will need a clean bill of health before her spay surgery can occur.

She is a wonderful dog with some good manners on her; she does great with people, children, dogs, and cats. She was very calm in stores she visited, was calm at the vet's office, took treats well, whined at the door to go out for duty breaks, sat on the car seat/bench nicely during rides and loaded and unloaded nicely. She does pull on leash when walking (quite hard), but I used a Gentle Leader and she did quite well with it on. She really loves her tennis balls- loves to tease you with it as well as shred it.

We'll write more as we get to know Reddi better, but the way she's calmly made herself at home in the last hour has me convinced that she is one Sweet Golden Girl.

Monday morning at the vet's office was a fun game of "...How old do you think Reddi is?" Some records indicate Reddi as being 21 weeks old, which is not possible given her Heartworm positive status (nothing alive in the dead of winter to infect her). Other estimates have been as much as four years old, in considering the accumulation of tartar on her teeth and enlarged mammary glands (possible false pregnancy or recent litter of pups).

Regardless, Reddi now weighs 48 pounds and has been micro chipped and brought current on her vaccinations. Her Heartworm positive status was confirmed, and I am in the process of arranging the treatment plan for Reddi.

Reddi continues to be a sweetheart of a gal and has been no trouble to care for. She and Thomas 06-174 have LOTS of fun sparring with each other and she takes Thomas' hoarding of bones and toys in perfect stride. Reddi has a very gentle temperament that even the vet noticed this morning while inserting the microchip; Reddi had the perfect motive and opportunity to give a warning nip this morning but did not do a thing about it - which is just a wonderful indicator of Reddie's temperment.
