Tonight is Silas's first night with me in his new foster home. He was found running loose with another dog (Danno) and rescued from a kill shelter by caring volunteers in Ft. Madison.

Happy to be in foster home!

This very handsome boy is a gorgeous golden blonde and will make a fantastic companion. Maybe between 7 and 8 years old, Silas seems in general good health and is neutered. He does have a gunky left ear. He has a vet's appointment on Wednesday to really check him out.

Silas is a true-blue Golden Retriever with all the wonderful attributes of a GR. He rode beautifully in the car. (He was crated from Ft. Madison to Coralville and rode in my back seat from there to eastside Iowa City.) He ran around my backyard with my young male Golden and was appropriately respectful and submissive to the queen of the house -- my Golden Chow.

He had a good supper of Taste of the Wild and showed no interest in the other dogs' food or guarding issues. Nor has he shown any interest in my cat (but that's still to be watched). He has tried to pee in the kitchen and upstairs, but I caught him pretty quickly, and I don't totally blame him. (Previous owners' dogs peed in the house, and my Remington has on occasion, also. So, I expect Silas is getting the smell impression that it's okay.) I expect he'll be a quick learner.

He's a real cuddle-bunny and totally happy just snuggling up close. He did jump on the couch, but that's not allowed here, so he had to get down. He's very responsive to doing what he's asked and appears to know at least "down." He's adjusting super quickly and settling in just great!

Silas is adjusting wonderfully to his foster home. He is getting along great with his foster brother, Remington; foster sister, Emma; and foster cat, Bella.

Silas and Remie

He loves just sitting at my feet or poking his head into my lap. He's a very happy-go-lucky guy that doesn't get bothered by much of anything. He didn't react to thunder or the high winds of the blizzard. He stayed away from the vacuum cleaner but did not bark at it or seem fearful.

Happy Silas

I've only heard him bark once -- when Remington got to playing a little rough. Silas thought it was time to let Remington know that he was coming on a little strong.

Snow is a treat for him. Today he was out in the back yard making snow dog angels!

This guy is truly adorable.

Silas had his intake vet visit today (12/19). He was a perfect gentleman and charmed everybody! He was afraid of the dog scales, but eventually got everything on except for part of his front paws and his nose. He weighed in at just over 80 pounds. Dr. H said his weight is almost perfect; he could afford to lose a few pounds, but doesn't really need to. (Having him on good dog food should take care of that -- no problem.)

Silas at Tender Care

He's in really good health. His left ear needs attention and will be getting daily drops and some good cleaning -- but no antibiotics. Yay! And the right ear is fine.

He has an epulis on the lower left side of his gums, which Dr. H believes is a fibromatous type. The epulis is a benign tumor that arises from the gums. There is no need for surgery unless it causes eating problems or becomes painful. If it does get removed at some point, it should be biopsied.

Silas received his rabies vaccination when he came into the community shelter, so all he received today was bordatello and the first of two distemper shots. Once he gets his second distemper booster, he'll be up-to-date on his shot series. He also got his microchip.

Heartworm and fecal test results will be reported as soon as they're in.

Silas was a very good boy through the whole visit. Dr. H fell in love with him, as you can see from their picture together.
