Skipper 14-408

Profile

Introducing Skipper, RAGOM's newest distinguished gentleman! Skipper is a purebred Golden Retriever whose main goal in life seems to center around love, both giving and receiving. He comes to us from a very devoted and loving family, and it definitely shows in his super sweet personality! His family is returning to their homeland and sadly, are not able to bring Skipper along. We've promised Skipper and his mom and dad that we'll find him another wonderful family to call his own.

Skipper had a checkup with his RAGOM vet yesterday and the results are in...he's as healthy as can be! Skipper weighed in at 69.9 lbs and could stand to lose just a couple pounds. FM wishes that was all SHE needed to lose! He does have some tartar buildup on his teeth so we picked up an elk antler on our way home from the vet. Skipper loves it and has been giving it a good workout - hopefully all that chewing will help put a little sparkle back into his pearly whites. He's also a bit itchy so we've started giving him a couple Benadryl and a fish oil capsule with his breakfast and dinner and he snarfs everything right up :)
Skipper did not have a physical fence in his previous home and was trained to his boundaries. We have a 6' privacy fence here and would prefer his adoptive home have a physical fence or secure tie-out in order to keep Skipper safe. I'm happy to say he hasn't shown any signs of bolting out an open door or gate since he's been here! We haven't been able to test Skipper with other dogs or kids yet, since we have neither in our household. We'll try to meet some dogs soon. Skipper's family reports that he just sniffs other dogs and calmly walks away and is good with kids ages 5 and up. Until we've seen him interact with younger kids, we'll stick with ages 10+ just to be safe, but he's such a lover that I think he'd also do fine with younger kiddos. We do have a resident cat who has become quite adept at putting dogs in their place, as in "bottom of the food chain". After an initial chase the first day, I'm happy to report that Skipper has passed the cat test. I still watch them closely though, only because I don't trust the cat!

Skipper loves loves loves.... treats, walks (does well on a flat collar), car rides, more treats, kisses, ear scritches, belly rubs, catnip toys (oops, had to put those away!), a few more treats, destuffing dog toys (oops, had to put those away, too!), his bully stick and elk antler!! Oh, and did I mention treats? Tomorrow  we'll see if he's a fan of a frozen peanut butter Kong!

Skipper has yet to try out the furniture and we don't invite him up in case this is something his adoptive family doesn't want him to do, or prefers he uses only specific pieces of furniture. We've let him choose where to sleep at night and so far he likes his dog bed in the dining room. He's more than welcome to sleep on the dog bed in our bedroom, but so far has chosen not to. That darn cat may have swayed his decision somewhat.
Skipper is just the biggest sweetheart ever! If you're looking for a guy who's young enough at heart to accompany you on whatever adventure you have planned for the day AND mature enough to chill out with you at home when you're feeling like a couch potato, Skipper's a perfect match! Updates

Dear RAGOM,

We have now had Skipper for nearly 3 years. He has been in outstanding member of our household.  Here is a selection of photos over the last couple years.  Some with other RAGOM adoptees that we have had.  Also included is Skipper out on his many adventures, wearing a silly captains hat, and doing one of his favorite things which is being a registered therapy dog.  He is looking forward to attending Goldzilla in a few days with his current adoptive brother Boika.

Pictures of skipper with his adoptive brother and sister, Scotty and Jade.  Also doing his therapy work and just looking cute.  Included is one shot of him enjoying a ride on the Lake Harriet trolley car.  He continues to be a perfect therapy dog and a wonderful companion at home.  He just turned 11 this summer.  His health has been just fine.

Skipper is now a Perfect Ten (years old) and a registered Therapy Dog.  He visits health care facilities pretty much every weekend and some weekdays, too - in fact he has put in almost 25 hours of visiting since June 2015.  He even has his own photo ID volunteer badge.  After visiting hospitals and nursing homes, he enjoys going out to lunch with mom & dad at one of the many dog-friendly restaurant patios in the Twin Cities.  He is always on his best manners of course!

Here he is with RAGOM siblings Rufus and Jade, waiting for dinner.  When mom says, "dinner is served", he sits down by his placemat and waits until his bowl is put before him.  What a good boy!

Our sweet Skipper was adopted on Sunday , and we couldn't be happier! Mark and Ruth V are now 6 time RAGOM adopters who will dote on Skipper for the rest of his life. He'll have the opportunity to become a therapy dog alongside his fur-ever brother Rufus and perhaps his fur-ever sister Jade 14-069  (if she chooses to also join in her family's volunteer work). An added bonus is that his new Mom works from home!
Skipper, you've hit the jackpot you so deserve, as has your new family We can't wait to see you at RAGOM meet 'n greets and the picnic in September! Thank you, Mark and Ruth, for opening your hearts and home to yet another lucky RAGOM pup!!

Happy weekend, everyone! Skipper here with my weekly news report.

Firstly...I spent last weekend with another RAGOM foster and his resident dog, Duke. FM & FD would like to give Bentley a shout out of huge thanks for taking such good care of me. It was a four paws up establishment!

Secondly...I met a really nice family a few nights ago, however it didn't turn out to be a 100% love connection, so I'm still on the "Hunka Burnin' Love" available list. Lucky you!! I'm not sure what got into me, but I became a bit over-excited and hugged (if you catch my drift, wink wink) the nice lady. I've never done that with FM or FD, but FM said if I ever do it's a super easy fix :) Just a gentle correction, help me chill out and we're good to go. My absolute favorite way to chill is for someone to ask me to lay down and I'll roll over on my back for tummy rubs. Ahhh, pure heaven!

Thirdly...FM was very, VERY proud of me this morning. You may remember a few days ago I wrote that she doesn't totally trust The Cat? Well. After breakfast today T.C. and I were nose to nose, sniffing each other politely, when outta the blue...WHAM!!! T.C. jumps at me, puts his arms around my neck and tries to bite me. Thick fur is a plus in this type of situation. FM used her stern voice (CECIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and he skittered away. Busted, heh heh! All I did was try to back away and FM said I was sooo pawesome and gave me extra treats :) Me - 1; The Cat - 0. By the way, FM has never used her stern voice and MY name together in a sentence.

Fourthly...I went to the groomer this week. I wasn't quite sure about about all that fluffing and buffing at first. Turns out, having the spa treatment isn't just for the ladies. I feel good! And you thought I was handsome before... :)

It sure looks beautiful outside so I think I'll ask FM if we can go for a walk. I love walks. And car rides. And doing whatever you feel like doing! Contact your Placement Advisor and tell them you need a hunk in your life. They'll know who you're asking for ;)

Skipper here as promised, with an update and more pics! I thought I'd share a brief list of "things I've been able to teach FM and FD about me".

1)  When the doorbell rings, I do not feel it's my duty to answer the door. After all, I'm a guest here. When someone is invited in, I mosey on over and politely greet our visitor with four on the floor.
2)  The vacuum cleaner does not need to be chased nor feared, but keeping a respectable distance between it and me doesn't hurt. Just in case.
3)  Still not too sure about all that hardwood flooring in the kitchen. FM caught on as soon as I arrived and rearranged the throw rugs so I wouldn't slip. Much appreciated :)
4)  Once I hit the sack at night, I'm there for the duration. No need to let ME out to relieve myself at 2am just because YOU have to go.
5)  If you leave a tissue lying around, I'll pick it up and bring it to you for proper disposal, or maybe shred it just a little to get my point across. I like to keep a tidy house.

6)  Just because I haven't counter surfed here does not mean it hasn't crossed my mind. Just sayin'...
7)  I told FM and FD that I'm fine being home alone but they felt they had to test me. I passed with flying colors. Told ya so!
8)  I love snow and I'm quite adept at making snow angels!
9)  I'll let you take my picture wearing your silly hat, but I draw the line at going outside with it on. It's a dignity thing, even with the privacy fence.
10) I tread lightly where The Cat is concerned, as I've heard you don't want to tick him off. So far, so good!

So there you have it. Me. In a nutshell. Until next time, stay warm and snuggle your pups! It's good for the soul :)
