Meet Snowball!! Or Snowie as I prefer to call him:) Snowie is a Golden mix, possibly English Cream Golden, but a beautiful dog for sure!

Snowie was rescued by a good samaritan named Kitra. Kitra worked her magic and convinced the owners of Snowball to turn him over to her care. Snowball had been chained in the back yard with nothing but a rough plywood box to live in. By their own admission, the owners said they rarely fed or watered him and were actually thinking of letting him go in the country or just shooting him, but thankfully Kitra gained their trust and she was able to save Snowball. Thank you Kitra; Snowie is now on his way to living a golden life thanks to you!

Snowie arrived after a long journey and a ride from RAGOM volunteers Jan and Mary. He rode very well in the car and is very sweet. He met my resident Nala with no problems, although Nala wants to play with him and, unfortunately, I do not think Snowie knows much about other dogs as he doesn't seem to understand the playbowing and the attempt at Nala trying to get him to wrestle. He just runs away from Nala as she tries to play and he looks confused and comes looking for me. Other than not knowing how to play, he so far has done great with my two dogs. Since he arrived, he has gotten to know the house and yard and had two small meals. Snowie is quite skinny and really needs to put some weight on. His coat is bushy but his ribs are very prominent underneath his coat. He has come to the right house to get some weight on him. No dog leaves here without gaining some weight:)

So far Snowie has displayed the best temperament. He was very good as another RAGOM volunteer Kelly and I cut out his matted hair and gave him a bath. I actually just held him while Kelly did all of the work, so Snowie owes Kelly a lot (or rather Snowie's foster owes Kelly a lot!)

Snowie has an appointment at the vet on Monday and then I am going to bring him to a professional groomer. Snowie has a beautiful coat but because of bad nutrition and no care, it is in bad shape and really needs a professional to get all of the mats out. The hair on his tail really should be shaved off - it's that bad. Once he gets groomed, he will be neutered and ready to go to his forever home. Whomever adopts this special boy will indeed be the lucky ones. So far, he has just been so good. More to come as we get to know him.

Guess what!  I turned 3 yesterday!  I graduated from obedience one and I passed the Canine Good Citizenship test.  Now I am earning my associate degree,  class is harder this time, but I listen well while I am there.  I can be pretty strong willed sometimes at home though.  I love the cooler days and love to lay in the yard in the shade, that is til a big truck or school bus comes by, then I have to bark a lot, don't know why I don't like them but I am very protective you know.  I guard the house well and don't let strangers near, but once my mom says it's ok, then I am your best friend. I love playing with the cats now, can you believe it, they are actually fun, we take turns playing chase.  I never touch their toys and they don't touch mine though.  No problems here with the cats anymore.

I don't like lightning, but I just go hang out with my mom or in my "safe" room and I am ok. I am also attaching a picture of my cousin "Buddy".

He came from another local rescue group.  This is what I must have looked like as a puppy.

Snow

Friday, March 27, 2009

Hi to all my RAGOM fans from Snowie,

I am so glad the winter is almost over, but my favorite thing to do was to eat snow, maybe this is how I got my name.  I could never get enough of the fresh snow to eat.  I have been outside a lot just running around. I finally met the neighbor black lab, Shawna, but she is 14 and doesn't run as fast as I do, but she does let me open the gate between our yards and run. The orange kitty, Snickers, and I are now good friends (Tracey you wouldn't believe it!).  I even let him sleep on my bed. I have been going to "school". Wow, that is hard work, but I am doing well.  I am going to earn my "Good Citizenship Award"  I listen very well when I am at school, but it sure makes me tired, even the puppies that are there are taking a nap after 30 minutes.  My mom signed up to be a RAGOM volunteer, so maybe I will get to go with her sometimes to events. My favorite thing to do still is to go for rides.  Today I finally let my mom take a picture of me to show you how happy I am, I am even smiling!!

Snowie

Hi, this is Snowie,

I have lived in my new house since Oct. 2008.  I have 2 feline friends here.  One is great (the orange one), the other one doesn't care for me much.  That doesn't bother me though as long as she stays away from my toys.  It has been a long winter, and I can't wait for it to be over, my paws can't stand anything below zero.  I am doing well here, I have earned the title of the neighborhood "Guard Dog".  I understand I am registered for "obedience" school in April, so I can learn to be an even better dog.  I still tend to get along best with the ladies, but if men bring me treats I warm up to them fast.  I want to thank my previous family for teaching me all that I know, and for taking me in and keeping me warm.  I also want to thank RAGOM for being such a great organization and helping so many dogs in need.

Snowie has been a member of our family since December and we have loved every minute with him. We are very attached to Snowball but he has become too attached to me and begun resource guarding me from my young daughter, so we will be looking for a forever family that does not have young children. Snowball has storm anxiety and since we just began the storm season, we are trying different approaches to help him during a storm. When Snowie first arrived, he was skittish in new situations and afraid of men (I believe he was abused by a man before arriving at RAGOM). Overtime and with lots of positive experiences with men he seems to have overcome that fear. We still introduce him to new situations slowly to give him time to adjust. His confidence has been great over the past five months until about three weeks ago when we had a storm. He is very frightened of storms and wants to hide. He seems to be stressed for a day or two after the storm as well. When this happens, he is quiet and wants to be left alone. Given the number of storms we have had in the past few weeks, it has been a stressful time for him.

Now for all the wonderful information about Snow and what he is looking for in a forever family! He is normally very affectionate, playful and beautiful. He just turned two on June 7 and is in perfect health, current on all shots and neutered. He loves attention, being brushed and sometimes thinks he is a lap dog. Snow and his fur-sister Mia are best friends! They love playing, chasing each other in the yard and playing tug. He gets along with most dogs but is a guy and prefers the ladies! Snowie would love another fur-sister in his forever home but would be fine without a dog too. He is crazy about cats, but they don’t dig him! Snowball does need to have a fenced yard as he was tied outside for the first year and a half of his life. He is very gentle with treats, and walks well on a leash. He will need a family that can provide a stable home for him, will appreciate all the wonderful qualities and work with Snowie on situations that scare him.

Here is a photo of Snow playing outside last night….beautiful night and he and Mia had a blast!

Uncle Phil bought us new rope toys and I have finally mastered playing tug! Mia the resident dog thought she was king of the hill, but has learned she has some competition! I love the snow….it feels so good to be out running free and you can hardly see me. Mia and I have a blast together and I met a new puppy this week. She was so much fun and I didn’t even mind those razor sharp puppy teeth:) I’m still doing great and the kids were soooo happy to see me. I am loving life and am looking forward to meeting my forever family! Interested in learning more about me? Great! Please contact placementatragom [dot] com

Here are photos of me after playing outside, “helping” with housecleaning and then taking a snoozer with Mia!

Snowball went to the vet on January 2nd, was neutered and had his last set of shots and is doing great! He has gained a few pounds and has done great with house training. He is a happy, healthy, confident, affectionate and gorgeous dog. Snowie tosses his toys at our resident dog if she isn’t paying attention to him – they are so funny to watch and are great buddies! His enthusiasm for life is contagious, and when he looks at you with those gorgeous, adoring brown eyes your heart will melt! At night when he sleeps, Snowie places his front paw over someone – me, foster dad or our dog. I have never seen a dog that is that affectionate! Here is a picture of Snowie and our resident dog hanging out –

First of all, thank you to Mary Schroeder for being my sponsor!!

I have been so busy I haven’t had time to write! I went to the vet this weekend and had a few more puppy shots and the vet checked out my frost burn which is healing nice. I’ve also gained a few pounds and am doing great! I will be back at the vet on January 2 to be neutered.

On Sunday Mia, the resident dog and I went to have our hair done. I loved it and let me tell you how handsome I look. All of my matts are gone, I smell great and the groomers thought I was just about the most handsome dog they have ever seen.

This morning Santa left lots of goodies for me, then we had lots of visitors, I played with the kids, dogs and then out to the backyard to play in the snow. I had so much fun and everyone told me what a great dog I am. My foster mom can’t get many pictures of me because I love to run to the camera, and if I am playing outside, it’s hard to capture me in pictures because I blend in with the snow!

Let me tell you about me and what I am looking for in a forever family. I am a very smart, social and affectionate dog and love to be with people. I’m a great listener and am learning how to sit, stay and come, and have already learned to shake. I get along great with kids, and the resident dog Mia. I don’t make much noise as I hardly ever bark. I’m learning about the joy of toys and just starting to walk on a leash… still need to figure out how to walk without pulling on the leash. I’m doing really well with learning to go potty outside and have not had any accidents for 4 days. I am in a crate during the day when my foster mom is at work, and I don’t mind it too much – usually sleep when she is gone. I like to sleep in either a people or dog bed.

I need to live in a house with a fence. I cannot be tied out on a chain again… I lived like that for too long. I would be fine with or without another dog, and am good with kids. I’m not sure yet what I think about cats. I have made so much progress and now trust people and know they will be nice to me. My tail wags all the time and life is great! My forever family should know about my past and introduce me slowly to new situations such as new dogs because I am a little scared at first, but warm up very quickly. If you are interested in meeting me, please contact placementatragom [dot] com .

Hi, it’s me Snowie. I have moved to a new foster home, and my previous foster mom Tracy was so good to me I have already made lots of progress! I’ve settled into my new home nicely and am already a part of the family. There is another dog here and I love playing with her. She has taught me the joys of toys, and we have tons of fun running in the back yard. You see, I was chained up outside for my entire life, and I can never do that again, so I really need a big fenced yard at my forever home.

There are two little people here (3 and 6 years old) and I think they are pretty fun. They are always moving and noisy and they are crazy about me. I have not figured out how to bring them toys, but I am pretty smart so it shouldn’t take me too long! My foster mom thinks I am smart and gorgeous and so affectionate… I love hanging out with people.

Because I have lived outside my entire life, I am still learning that I am supposed to go potty outside. I’m starting to make the connection and do better each day. I get lots of exercise outside and when my foster mom goes to work, Mia the resident dog and I hang out together in crates. I’m not too excited about that but I guess it is one of the house rules! No worries though, because when foster mom gets home – I get to play outside and get lots of love until I go to bed!

Gotta go rearrange the presents under the Christmas tree, so I’ll catch up with you later!

Snowie's first night went very well. I let him have free roam during the night and he was super good and slept all night on the comforter on the floor. I invited Snowie up on the bed to sleep but he was unsure of that option, so chose the comfy bed on the floor. The good news is that Snowie didn't get into anything and didn't have any accidents!! This morning when the alarm went off, he happily jumped on the bed for a big good morning greeting!

Snowie is skittish in new circumstances and would do better in a home where he can learn from a confident resident dog. He is still unsure of coming in the house right away, even though we have been in and out probably a gazillion times since he arrived. If Nala comes in first, it's much easier. He doesn't necessarily need a dog that wants to play, but just a dog that likes having other dogs around that he can mimic. I also think finding a home for Snowie with a fence is best. Snowie already spent so much of his time chained to a plywood box that allowing him the freedom to run in a fenced in back yard would be wonderful. The way he runs around in my back yard is so wonderful to see; you can truly see how much he appreciates this new found freedom and I would love for that to continue. While he doesn't 'engage' with Nala in play, he certainly does enjoy running around with her. Stay tuned for more updates as we get to know Snowie much better.
