Sonny 07-446

Profile

Sonny is a sweet, gentle, loving, Teddy Bear of a dog. Did I mention gorgeous? After some confusion, we have determined he is between 2 and 3 years old.  Like most rescue dogs, Sonny has had a tough few weeks.  First, he was surrendered by his family to a Humane Society in Iowa. Reason – “they didn’t want the dog anymore.” Then he was in a kennel for more than a week, then neutered, and then driven all the way to St. Paul.  But on July 21, he arrived at his loving foster home and has settled in fine.  Upon arriving, he was given a new toy, which he loves to death. We’re not sure if he ever had a toy before, but now he carries his Hedge Hog everywhere, even when we go on walks. Supposedly, he was a farm dog and from the look of his fur coat, he clearly is used to cold temperatures.  But he is housebroken, does not chew or get into the trash and he immediately jumped up on the couch upon arrival. Sonny is a big boy, at 78 pounds with a fur coat to match. But he has the classic easy going, blocky head, gentle Golden personality that we all love.

Sonny has been with us for over a year and a half. He is such a sweetheart. Sonny still loves to carry his toys around (and sometimes de-stuff them), but he prefers to just be with us.

He is one of the gentlest dogs I have ever seen.

Unbelievable to think that he was only a day away from being euthanized before RAGOM rescued him. He was best friends with our other golden Goldie, who we lost in November.

Goldie and Sonny

Now he is getting along great with our new addition, Pringles (08-603). Thank you RAGOM for this wonderful dog!

Sonny was adopted by Tom and Nancy B. last night. The B. family have a fenced in yard, Nancy works at home, and best of all they have Goldie, another Ragom rescue.  Both dogs got along fine and will be best of friends in no time.  Sonny is such a special dog, and we thought about keeping him (of course we do that with every dog we get) but our sadness was quickly replaced with joy when we met this wonderful family.  Both Sonny and Mr. Hedge Hog will have a great family.   8/4 Adoption follow-up We got a call this morning from Nancy who said as soon as the dogs got home, they proceeded to run around the yard and start playing with each other. Also Sonny met the family cat and both are now good friends.

Today Sonny went to the vet and had his sutures removed from his neuter. The vet also took an xray of his lungs since he seems to still be short of breath at times. Her opinion is that he was around people who smoked and/or he was around a lot of barn dust (or maybe ammonia) and this has affected his lungs a little. Nothing requiring medication oranything else.  We did take a blood test in order to check thyroid.  We should the results back in a few days. But his heart is good, his lungs are good, and he was a wonderful patient.

We continue to learn more about Sonny and it is all good.  While walking through the park the other day, we stopped to meet Bear.  Soon as Sonny put his hedge hog down, Bear took it and quickly ran behind his Mommy to hide it. Not a peep from Sonny. He has gotten along with every dog we have met.  Even when the little, yappy ones try to get in his face, he is patient and when fed up, he just walks away as far as his leash will allow. He is equally loving of every person we have met and we have not found anything yet that seems to really bother him. We do have a problem with the vacuum cleaner.  We have to vacuum around him. Talk about laid back!. He had a mild interest in a bag of trash last night but after sticking his head in it, he just walked away. (Of course he knocked the bag over first).

He is very comfortable with us and just loves pats, naps, belly rubs, and a visit to the fire hydrant several times a day. This dog is just a special creature.  By the way, we made sure he got his hedge hog back from Bear.

Sonny has been coughing pretty regularly and seemed to have trouble getting comfortable. So off to the vet first thing Monday.  We were afraid of kennel cough but the vet said it was an upper respiratory infection and prescribed a dose of antibiotics.  He also had lost 3 pounds and was at 75 lbs. We have not yet seen the full Sonny since it is obvious he doesn’t feel well.  He gets up several times a night to change his position. He has no interest in chasing balls or going for long walks. A short walk to the park, several stops for petting along the way, then back home for a good nap. At first he didn’t eat his food, but now gobbles it down with no problems. The vet suggested that we may need to do a thyroid check since he is a little overweight, he is very lethargic, and he drinks a lot of water.  Soon as we get over the respiratory thing, we will decide then. He has no interest in the tennis ball but loves to have his Hedge Hog nearby. Sonny will be with us until he has his sutures removed, gets over his respiratory problems, and we figure out if his has any thyroid issues.  Should take about 1-2 weeks.
