Please welcome Sonny 13-033 to RAGOM. Sonny is an 11.5-year-old Golden/Lab mix. He has not had an easy life. He was adopted from a shelter in Duluth several times. He came back to the same shelter in November very close to starving to death after being dumped in a grocery store parking lot. His fur was falling out in large clumps. Thankfully, the people at Animal Allies Humane Society were able to save him. Sonny was brought up to date on vaccines and had a bad tooth pulled. The rest of his teeth were cleaned, but due to cost, no other dental work was done. Sonny is still unable to chew, so there are more dental issues to deal with yet. Sonny walks with a little bit of a limp. That is thought to be arthritis. It apparently doesn't bother him too much as he is able to walk 3+ miles without a problem every day he's been here. Sonny's blood work came back great. Everything is working as it should. Very surprising after what he went through. He was just very slightly low on iron, but that may be good by now. Sonny's hearing isn't the best. It takes a whistle or a very loud noise to get his attention.

Sonny is just a very mellow senior. He has had no problems at all with the other 3 dogs here and no problems with the 2 cats and 2 kittens. He will let the kittens eat out of his bowl while he is eating. The kitties will cuddle with him when he is napping. I believe Sonny was a outside dog for most of his life. It took a few days to get him to pee outside. I figured out his signal that he has to go is pacing back and forth. It's been a few days now with no problems since we both learned. Sonny isn't a cuddler yet but likes to be in the same room with me. Unfortunately, Sonny isn't able or doesn't know how to climb stairs. He hasn't followed to the bedroom upstairs yet. Once he gets his leg strength back, I think he will be able to climb more than a couple of stairs.

From what I know at this time, Sonny's forever home will only need to have lots of love, a soft bed, food, and daily excersize. If Sonny 13-033 sounds like the dog for you, please contact your placement advisor.

Updates

Thursday, February 21, 2013

Hi, Sonny followers, Sonny here.

First off, thank you to Suzy 07-255 and Deb D for the valentines/donations for me. It is very much appreciated. It is great to have people thinking of me that have never met me.

Since my last update, I have gotten more used to my new surroundings. FD (foster dad) has been really pouring the food to me. I get dry food that is soaked to soften and canned food along with glucosamine, chondroitin, and fish oil. It all seems to make me feel and move better. I've been putting weight back on. 6 lbs have been added to me the last time I was checked last week. FD says my spine isn't sticking out nearly as far and I'm starting to fill out some. I continue to walk more than 3 miles just about every day, except when it's nasty out. My legs are getting stronger. I still have a slight limp.

I went to a different vet last week for a dental exam. She said my teeth were stained but didn't see the need at this time for X-rays. She gave me a tasty hard dog biscuit and I ate it. FD was a bit surprised since I wouldn't hardly eat dry dog food. FD now brushes my teeth and puts a rinse in my mouth to help my gums out. I really don't like having that done but have tolerated it.

I get along great with all the other foster brothers and sister here. I'm friends with the kitties also. I let them eat some of my food if they want while I'm eating, and they will cuddle with me and sleep with me also.

I haven't really figured out stairs yet. The couple of steps going in and out of the house aren't a real problem, but the stairs to the basement or second floor are more than I care to tackle at this time. Maybe when my legs get a bit stronger.

I've been getting more affectionate to FD. I go to him for pets a few times a day. They have to be very light, gentle pets. FD tries to give me massages, but I haven't really gotten used to them yet. It does feel kind of good.

FD says I need a little work yet on the housebreaking. I get up during the night sometimes and forget I live inside a house now. FD is feeding us a little earlier and making sure things get done when we go out for the last time for the night.

My wishes for a new forever home are pretty simple: good food, some excersize, a nice comfy dog bed, and a bit of attention. Other dogs and cats would be great but not necessary. I just like to hang out with my people.

If I sound like a good match for you, please contact your placement adviser. Thanks again to Suzy 07-255 and Deb B for thinking of me. Without donations, none of this is possible.
