9/30/05: Good morning everyone!

Attached are pictures of Sophie and her pups, which were born this morning; the first one at 12:58am, and the last at 5:50am. 'Sophie' (no name on her tag) was rescued from New Orleans, along with numerous other dogs, by a group of animal rescue volunteers who went down a couple of weeks ago to offer their help. When the group got back to Minnesota with about 10 dogs who needed foster care while their owners were searched for, they called RAGOM to see if Sophie could come into the program (since she looked part Golden!). Pregnant, bones showing through her rough coat, and heartworm positive, she was taken into RAGOM with open hearts. Thank you Nancy A. for bringing Sophie to Minnesota and entrusting her to our care! Jeanette D. was able to take Sophie until I returned home from out of town. I picked her up from Jeanette's yesterday, and we decided to just get right down to it and have the puppies right away! :-)

Labor started almost immediately after we got home - nesting, whining, restlessness, and then the pushing started about midnight. Labor and delivery went smoothly, Sophie was initially a bit unsure and anxious with the first new pup, but has now settled in very comfortably and is a great mom!

All of these pups will likely need homes (unless the owner is found and takes them all home!) - so put out the word! Of course, if no one claims Sophie, she'll need a loving forever home too! Applications will be taken through RAGOM at www.ragom.org.

As you can see, two look light golden in color (boys), one is a medium golden color (girl), and two are beautiful black babies - (one boy and one girl, the black boy has one white shoe!) :-)

We may post pictures on my site (www.goldenacresdogs.com) as well as the RAGOM site - keep an eye on both (until we figure it out!) if you're interested!

Now, we're all going to get some sleep!

Sophie continues to feel more comfortable in foster care and around the other dogs. She has initiated play with Dakota 05-214 as well as the resident dog. Sophie has even started to play with toys!!! I call her my little shadow, she follows you were ever you go. Heartworm treatment seems to be going good, she now only coughs occasionally. She will be tested next week to see if she will need any more treatments and if all looks good she will scheduled to be spayed. Sophie has a strong prey drive. She would so love to chase squirrels or any small thing that runs! I took a picture of her trying to climb a tree to get to a squirrel!

Hey,

Sophie here; how ya doin'? I am doing much better. I have gotten a lot of energy the last few days, and I have even wanted to play with my foster sibs. My foster parents won't let me though, for about another week on account that I have heartworm. I have to tell ya that I am feelin' much better. I am not even so growly with my foster brother Dakota! I have free run of the house cause I haven't had any accidents.

My foster parents say I am a snuggler. They have never seen such a cuddler...and they have had a few dogs come through their doors. I know sit and shake, and I also come when called. My only desire is to be next to people. Attached is a latest pic and you can see that I am much perkier now; Chow-baby!

Hi everyone.

Sophie is fostered in Alexandria now. She needed a home without cats. She has been with us about 24 hours now, and what a sweetheart!! Since she is being treated for heartworms, we are keeping her quiet and on her lead, and she does not mind it a bit. She loves to snuggle! She slept with us in bed last night, however she was kind of a bed hog! More later this week as we get to know this little girl!

Wow - I went away for a couple of weeks and came back to great big puppies! It's amazing how quickly they grow at this age! Mom and all pups are doing just great! Little Rita joined her new family today! Tommy, Chandler, Sasha, Mickey, and Mom, Sophie, are all anxiously waiting!!

All is well - pups are 3 1/2 weeks old and really starting to play now - lots of fun!

Well, all was going swimmingly until today! Rita's lymph glands have swollen up out of the blue, and so she's not eating. I've started treating her, but your healing prayers are welcome!

Mom and the rest of the gang are doing well, although they seem to be developing a bit slower than I'd expect - no eyes open yet (Sasha's are just starting to open), and that usually happens between 10 and 14 days of age (they're 15 days old today). They're not moving around as much as I'd like to see either, although they're gaining weight nicely and otherwise seem to be in good health. Will keep you posted!

Rita (orange collar) - 323 - 15 oz!

Mickey (blue collar) - 321 - 16.5 oz.!

Sasha (yellow collar) - 325 - 14 oz.! Sasha is starting to develop some beautiful brown-ish red undertones on her legs - cute, cute, cute!!

Tommy (green collar) - 322 - 15.5 oz.!

Chandler (red collar) - 324 - 17 oz.! Chandler's white keeps becoming more apparent; in addition to his white 'tennis shoe', he has white under his chin, and is now sporting little bitty white toes! What a doll!

Growing like weeds! Mom's finally starting to gain a little weight too - tough to do with 5 hungry babies, but she's getting there!! Two-day-old picture attached!

Hi again!

Ok, details and updates...

RITA #05-323, is medium golden colored, and was the first born, at 12:58am (on 9.30.05). She was 11 oz. at birth, and 13.5 oz. this morning (10.01.05 - 1 day old).

MICKEY #05-321, is light golden colored, and was the second born, at 2:11am. He was 12.5 oz. at birth, and 14.5 oz. this morning.

SASHA #05-325, is black, and was the third born, at 4:25am. She was 11 oz. at birth, and 12 oz. this morning.

TOMMY #05-322, is light golden colored, and was the fourth born, at 5:20am. He was 12 oz. at birth, and 13 oz. this morning.

CHANDLER #05-324, is black with one white tennis shoe! :-) He was the fifth born, at 5:50am. He was 12.5 oz. at birth, and 15 oz. this morning.

All are cute as bugs in rugs, so soft and sweet and smell so good!!

And mom is doing GREAT too - she's such a little trooper!! It's hard to imagine what it would be like to survive the disaster in New Orleans, be separated from her family, packed into a parking lot full of lost animals for days without enough food to go around, put on a horse trailer with a bunch of other lost dogs, hauled all the way to Minnesota, poked and prodded by a strange vet, moved from foster home, to foster home, to foster home, and then go into labor and give birth (for what appears to be the first time, based on her reactions to everything), and then to still be wagging her tail, trusting, and loving to both her pups and everyone she meets. Amazing creatures!
