Sport 06-512

Profile

11/23/06: Sport is an UTD, 8 year old, neutered purebred Golden. I was surprised at our first meeting - Sport is a gentle giant at 92 pounds. He is very gentle and sweet. He spent the first part of his life as an outside dog on a farm. He has been a gentleman here without any accidents and paces by the door when he wants to go out. We spent some time brushing his wavy coat and he loved the brushing. Sport does urgently need vet care and will be going into the clinic first thing Friday am. He has a mass above his right eye that was first noticed two weeks ago and needs to be treated. The mass is growing very fast and our hope is that it is an abscess or something similar that is easily treated. Sport made friends with our resident Golden and has been only mildly curious about our cats. We will update as soon as we find out more about the lump/mass above his right eye.

Just a quick note from a tired ex-farm boy. It was fun seeing ya at PetCo and in case you didn't get there I am including a picture of me. A special thank you for the chew stick. It was so darn good I convinced mom to pick up a couple so Aster and I could have one at home. Time to say goodnight!

Sport is responding to the antibiotics again. He will be going in to the clinic on Wednesday to have the stitches taken out. Hopefully, we will have some more news regarding what we are going to do with the infection that keeps coming back. We were so hopeful that this time we had won the battle. Sport remains wonderful through all of this. He and Aster have been playing under our watchful eyes to make sure we don't have a problem with Sport's head. When play gets a little too much we distract the two towards something else. I did catch a couple of pictures, but had problems with flashes and Sport's eyes. One is Sport with his well battered collar and another a fair shot of his head. Don't let these pictures fool you, Sport is very handsome and has a regal way of carrying himself. Sport will be an awesome addition to a lucky family.

Sport is recovering from surgery. The vet had to remove a large area of tissue that was just not healthy fro Sport's abscess. To facilitate healing a drainage tube had to be inserted. I think I have counted twenty five sutures on Sport's head. Sport does very well with the cleaning and hot packs. He hates to take his pills. We have to coat them in yogurt now so he can't cough them up after he swallows. Sport has figured out pills can be hidden in treats and pulls all treats apart before taking them. Sport also wears a cone these days. He hates the cone but for his own good he has to keep it on. We did find out that Sport will need surgery on his back knee after his head heals. Sport remains very sweet through all of the work we have to do to take care of him. I do think he is looking forward to not needing the cone and medicine. Got to run, we need to take care of Sport's head for the night.

Hey, have you heard the good news? Sport is responding to the antibiotics and he is "Sporting" a new look!!! The lump is all but gone and all is left in a slightly red area, in the middle of area that was shaved. The fur is growing back and life is good for Sport. We went to PetSmart and people didn't recognize him at first. We are working on his potty breaks. When Sport first arrived he needed to go out almost every hour to hour and a half. We are up to three or four hours. Foster mom watches how much he is drinking to help time things. Sport came from a farm and never had to worry about waiting to go. We have had a couple of accidents but mom wasn't paying close attention to his subtle requests to go out. He is making his needs a little clearer now but he is still on antibiotics and needs to drink a lot of water and frequent trips outside. Sport loves to be with people. He snuggles, and sleeps on the floor next to the bed. Sport will be going to see the vet this week to check his head and a knee that we noticed was a little tender. If you want to meet this gentle lovable sweet guy, contact placement.

Sport has been with us for three days now. The good news is, with the hot packs and new antibiotics the lump on his head seems to be going down. We can really see his right eye now. We spoke with the vet today and said that we hope to have results on Tuesday or Wednesday on what type of infection we are dealing with. Sport got in on bath day. He and our resident Golden made it to the tub and shower. Sport's coat is so much softer but I can't believe the curls. He has ringlets on many parts of his body and he loves to be brushed. We did have a little scare with Sport. He slipped out of the house and we had to follow. He did not come to us once he was outside. He was more interested in touring the neighborhood with us right behind. On the farm he was able to go where he wanted and when he goes to his forever home, a fenced in yard would be a plus. We will update again when the lab results come in.

We did aspirate some from the mass today. It was full of puss and bacteria. The vet feels that we may be dealing with an anaerobic bacteria from the history provided. A sample was rushed off to the lab to do the testing and we should know more next week. Clindamycin was added to Sport's antibiotic list. Clindamycin works well on anaerobic bacteria and with the other antibiotics, we are hopefully getting a jump start on the infection. If it is anaerobic, Sport may have surgery next week to open the mass, insert drain tubes and clean out the dead tissue. The good news is that Sport's mass does not look like a cancer or tumor and can be successfully treated. Sport was a champion through all the tests and is resting quietly at my feet as I write this update.

Sport's head is healing well. He has hair growing in and is looking good, he is sporting a crew cut instead of the bald look. We thought we should send a few new pictures in before we make it to PetCo. Sport is a very happy go lucky guy and easy to work with. He has come a long way since Thanksgiving. Sport no longer needs to be crated and has free reign of the lower area of our home while I am at work without accidents. He has learned to come when called, sits, lays down, and shakes. Sport is catching on to leash walking without tangling up in the woods. Looking back, he is one smart boy who wants to please. Sport leaves the cats alone even when they are at his water bowl and enjoys playing with our resident Golden, Aster. We are anxious for him to come off his antibiotics in a couple of weeks to see if the infection has cleared completely, keep your fingers crossed.
