Sugar (Bobbie 07-252)

4-29-2007: Bobbie arrived in Minnesota last night after a long journey from a puppy mill in Missouri. She was rescued along with 20 other adult dogs and several puppies. Bobbie spent the night at another volunteer’s home, since we were unable to meet the transport crew last night.

Bobbie is 1.5 years old and is on the smaller side. She is absolutely adorable! She has curly hair and her tail is bobbed (that’s where her name comes from). Apparently a bulldog chewed it partially off when she was a young puppy. As expected, she is still quite timid. However, she is very curious and has spent most of the afternoon out of her crate exploring her new surroundings. I think she’s being quite brave for all she’s been through. We will continue to let her become acquainted with us and teach her that only good things come from humans. We will take Bobbie to visit the vet this week and will keep you posted on her progress!

Our lovely, gentle, beautiful Sugar/Bobbie girl was adopted today. She has a new golden sister, Zoe, who is the same age as Sugar/Bobbie. Another great note was this family traveled 4+ hours to meet her and it is a totally beautiful day out! How great this is, considering we just got 7" of snow and a blizzard this past weekend (4 days ago)!!! Hard to believe!

The S family will be wonderful parents for Sugar girl and so very understanding of her as well. Zoe and Sugar already have had a walk and romps in the back yard and how nice for our girl she has a companion sister her own age. This was a heartfelt, warm and wonderful match to a beautiful golden girl by such a great family.

Again, it is always a little ‘bittersweet’ when we adopt out these lovely golden babes, however, I totally love what I do. We also know there are so many more great dogs to bring into rescue and help along and foster so they too, get the best fur-ever home.

Sugar Bobbie, we love you and know you will be very loved and well taken care of now, for the rest of you golden life.

Miss you.

Well we are getting through the last of the spring snow storms now I think, finally! Obviously our foster lady, Sugar-Bob LOVES the snow and LOVES to play! She is doing so wonderful, just cannot ask for more in a golden girl! She is more confident, fun, relaxed, joy each and every day. She is really enjoying the car/truck rides now. She looks forward to our daily walks – her and Maggie. We use a harness and she has never pulled. She walks right by you on your left-hand side.

There will be a few ‘outside’ sounds that may startle her, such as really loud trucks, etc. but they scare my Maggie too. I have yet to see her potty on the leash yet. But like the others, loves to go ‘in and out’ when I am home....we need a revolving door! She puts that little curly butt up in the air and ready to go! She loves her ‘daily banana/apple’ snacks. Yep, like the doggie snacks too, and patiently waits. We are still working on the ‘sit’ thing.....she just really does not care......but she will stand up on her hind legs like a dancing bear and wait and watch for her snack. I cannot say enough what a doll she is. Her gentle face, and eyes, and well...... just all of her. She likes to be brushed and is getting more calm about when the brushes/combs come out and that it is nothing which will hurt or scare her. These are things which will make her feel ‘good’. She loves to sun on the patio with the others.........just soak it up and hang out. She has went to where I work and did just fine with everyone. You go slow, and she was great and handled people and new surroundings very good. She even did the big ceramic steps to the lower level with no problem. I don’t know which makes you melt more with this baby, her face, that stubby curl butt or what.......she is wonderful. We absolutely love fostering her. We of course are still working on ‘coming up to us’ when called, depends on HER mood....but she eventually does. A game perhaps? She will come and lay by me nice wherever I am, watching TV, computer, or sitting and enjoying all the rest of the troops in a group gathering. She even goes up and sniffs the cats and all do just fine.

She is all ready for when Tim comes home from work at night, her little curly butt going.........all ready to greet. It is SO CUTE. Sugar-Bob really enjoys all other animals. She enjoys looking at birds, squirrels, deer .........not chase, just stare and hope to watch for a while. Toys, she loves them. Ok, the retrieve thing isn’t the best, but boy is she great at running after one (or multiples) that you toss out in the yard! To ‘keep away’ and ‘play’ is a hoot with Sugar-Bob. Sometimes I will toss out a bunch of doggie toys and see what she wants to do..........she has no clue.........just having a bunch to choose from is really fun. She is quite calm now with all the household noises and we have not seen her really get startled at all now. Loves her food.........and very respectful...eats very well every time. We sometime mix in some ground cooked turkey, chicken and/broth, or a real good moist (Merrick) food with the dry kibble in the mornings. She is always ready for her supper/breakfast. Sugar-Bob has a lovely ‘gate’ and ‘stance’ just beautiful. Whoever does end up adopting this girl is one super lucky family, very very lucky, that is all I can say! Ahhhhh, what a ‘babe’.

Some new pics of the girl; does the ‘golden roll!’ Sugar loves to be outside, play with her toys and just enjoy. She is absolutely lovely. She sure looks great after her grooming too. Her energy level is getting a little higher now that the weather is so much nicer (as the rest of the crew). She does wonderful on our walks and is getting better each time as far as sudden noises (still gets startled of course); other vehicles (loud and big) going by; things blowing around; and is fine going by other dogs. She is just a curly little angel girl. She is getting more inquisitive around the house, wants to be where the rest of us are, and has fun dragging her ‘babies’ around. She does not chew them up but must take them and move them someplace else (while I am at work). She is absolutely fine in the house while we are at work. She is left from 4-5 hours a day and she is right there to meet you when you get home (with the rest of the crew). Sugar has that ‘hoarse, almost non-existent’ bark from being perhaps de-barked. It is quite odd at first to hear this ‘different’ bark but after a while, it is almost cute---they just ‘talk different’ than other dogs. All part of her great wonderful personality and the other dogs don’t notice and she doesn’t either!

She is just a true joy to foster. So well behaved. Sleeps at night on the floor by my side of the bed then ready to run outside with her sister Maggie (border collie mix) for potty/run early in the morning. Everyone gets a long just great. She ignores the cats (unless they bolt by her and she just watches wondering what the cat nut cases are doing!). Sugar enjoys laying by the front door which outside door is all glass and watch the world outside........birds (loves to watch them) and anyone else who happens to walk by. She is so cute to watch. Her little stubby tail wags and it is so cute to watch....so curly too. She is noticing the robins come now and has a lot of fun watching the birds and giving a small ‘chase’ in fun. She is so pretty to watch. Sugar is a gentle girl and very mindful. She loves to be pet and will do the ‘golden thing’ and come up and nudge your arm/hand until you start petting and petting. Here is a gentle, small, curly, loving beauty of a golden girl........a very very special little lady!

Our lovely curly girl had her vet visit and groom yesterday. She was fine. She is completely UTD now and groomed and trimmed! Lots of scraggly curls and knots behind her ears and we are all clean and smell good! So we have a trimmed up rear and looks so cute. She feels good too.

The vet check came out great. She weighs 56#. Everything checked out good. She handled things pretty well. She has been doing very good on her walks. I just use a harness on her and she walks on your left side, and is now sniffing and checking things out. I am pleased she is not overly afraid or scared. If there are sudden noises (kids running out of the garage playing, etc.) then she will stall. Otherwise she is in super good shape and really enjoys her walks. She is getting very good at going for a ride in the car too. With or without another dog. Preferably with I think. You just fall in love with that stubby tail! When you think of her past and what she must have and did go through, just amazing how well she is doing and you cannot help but love this little curly angel girl!

She like goldens, pet and pet and pet! Roll outside in the snow. She really enjoys it outside and really likes to play. Quite outgoing. Loves her stuffed toys (does not chew them up either); enjoys her nyla bone; takes treats nice........really likes her apples and bananas!

Sugar/Bobbie is perfect with free roam of the house with the other dogs and cats. No problems at all. She sure is happy to have you come home and looks forward to running outside with the rest of the troops to run and play. Sugar/Bobbie listens very well. She will sit up on her hind legs to get her treat too if you ask her. She has picked up and is already comfortable with our schedule and is not nervous hardly at all. She is perfect with the cats. This is such a lovely curly girl who loves the outside, other dogs, walks and oh my gosh, petting. Her hair is just beautiful and soft now; and she has a face to make you melt and totally confirm why we love goldens! We so enjoy and love to foster this great little curly-sue!

A lovely small, curly girl called (formerly called Bobbie) Sugar now, arrived here for fostering on Saturday the 7th of March. Her trip here went fine. She met the pack and everyone was fine. Definitely needs other dogs of course. She has already really enjoyed the fenced yard (prior home had fenced yard too, so Bobbie/Sugar will need a fence).

She obviously has come a very, very long way since her original rescue into RAGOM from a bad puppy mill situation in Missouri in 2007. She has been surrendered back to RAGOM due to family changes and they are sad to have to surrender her back to RAGOM. She was well taken care by her previous adopters.

We are very happy to have her. So far she eats fine, goes in and outside potty fine, takes treats nicely (but you need to move slowly), and walks very nice. She is a sweetheart of a girl and so pretty. Sugar/Bobbie needs a good bath, trim and groom and will be just beautiful!

She is a small girl, I would say around #58 or so. You can tell of course she is a PM girl but again, she is doing awesome! She follows me all over, loves the other dogs and has just observed the cats, does not care what they do. So cats are fine as far we know , no problems. She will startle somewhat at new noises but not horrible. However our home is not real active either. She fits right into the pack and is quite comfortable. She is one honey of a baby girl that is for sure.

We really enjoyed our walks today and we received snow overnight, so that made for some real good rollin’ around this morning too. Sugar/Bobbie has such a tender face, demeanor and really wants to trust and so far, with encouragement, we are doing just that.

We also have gone for some short rides in the truck, and it was great. No sickness, barking or shivering. One time alone and a couple times with another pooch. So far, traveling/riding is fine.

This is a golden who can really win your heart in a short period of time. That curly hair, what a hoot! It is a dusty blonde color. Very thick. I can mess with her feet, teeth, and body and she is very good. Again, she is a PM dog with PM traits and things go slow(er) but wow, again I must say, she has come a very long way from her beginning. We are truly happy to have this wonderful girl and she is going to be a ‘heart breaker’ for sure. Even got kisses!

Does not get much better than that! A “well visit” will be scheduled for next week along with a groom and we will see how we do. More to come......we totally enjoy this baby.

Here are some photos from the first day:

Bobbie at Petco!

Saturday, May 19, 2007

Bobbie attended the RAGOM educational booth at Chuck and Don’s in Cottage Grove today.  I wasn’t sure how well she would do with lots of people and other dogs around.  Once we got her situated in a cozy corner away from the busy parking lot, she did surprisingly well.  She got lots of love and attention and she appreciated all of it very much.  Bobbie met a new friend, Maizy (07-190).  Both girls are puppy mill dogs and seemed to bond instantly.  Bobbie thought Maizy would make a great pillow and decided to take a quick snooze on her.  Two other RAGOM puppy mill dogs, who have already been adopted, also joined in the snuggling.  They all seemed to know they had something in common and took comfort in being close to one another.  Bobbie is worn out from her big adventure and has been sleeping since we got home!  Thanks to everyone that stopped by to visit today!

Bobbie and everyone at RAGOM would like to thank Penny Parker for sponsoring Bobbie.  We are all very appreciative of your generosity!

Bobbie has had a busy week.  Last Thursday she was spayed.  The surgery went well and she is recovering nicely.  She was also brought up to date on all of her immunizations.  The most exciting part of the vet visit was the fact that she walked in and out of the vet office all on her own.  The previous visit she had to be carried.  The vet also said there were no signs of debarking – thank goodness!  I guess she just has a weird bark.  We are continuing to clean and treat her ears for the ear infections.  Otherwise, she is very healthy.  On our trips to the vet, we also learned she rides great in the car!

Last week, I received some additional notes on the Missouri puppy mill dogs.  If this information from the breeder is correct, Annie (07-249) is Bobbie’s mother.  Her father was not one of the dogs rescued from the mill.

Bobbie’s trust of humans continues to improve daily.  Today when we were outside, she came up to me two different times to be petted.  She is still a little hesitant when being approached, but as long as we move slowly and talk to her softly she now cautiously watches instead of running to her crate to hide.   She always melts into you once she gets over the fear of the initial touch.  On a few occasions she has even initiated play with our dog.  It never last long, but it’s a definite step in the right direction.  She has also started a collection of dog toys.  She is hilarious to watch.  She sneaks up to the toy basket when she thinks no one is watching, grabs a toy and then runs for the landing on our steps.  She then keeps her “prized possessions” in a little pile in the corner of the landing.  It’s hard to believe all the progress she’s made in only two weeks.  She is a joy to foster and I know she will be a joy for the family that decides to add her to their home.

Bobbie has made so much progress in only one week.  She likes to be out of her crate and explore the house as long as we don’t get too close to her.  When we do approach, she typically runs to her crate.  We’ve spent many hours sitting on the floor next to her crate talking to her and petting her.  The first few days, she would hide in the back of her crate and look away.  Now, she doesn’t look away or cower in the back of the crate.  We still haven’t been able to convince her to come all the way out to get petted, but we continue to work on building to that level of trust. Once she gets over the initial fear of having someone approach her, she loves to be petted.  We've been letting her snuggle with us on the couch in the evenings and we’re hoping it’s helping her learn how good life can be.  We know we are enjoying it!

The first several days, we had to carry her outside to do her bathroom business.  Now, she is coming in and out on her own.  This morning I didn't even have to hide behind the door, she just followed me right in!  She's been eating well, but not when we're watching.  So far, she won’t take treats from us, but we keep offering!

We visited the vet Thursday evening.  She is healthy other than very dirty and infected ears.  We are cleaning her ears several times a week and treating them with medication.  Bobbie makes a very strange sound on occasion.  At first, I thought it was a cough.  After hearing it a few more times, I suspect she may have been debarked at the puppy mill.  The vet said if this is the case, their will be a lot of scar tissue in the throat.  They will be able to determine if this is true when they intibate her during her spay surgery.  Bobbie is scheduled to be spayed next week.

Bobbie will need a forever home with another dog.  She isn’t interacting much with our dog, but she does watch him closely for cues.  She will also need a home that is fairly calm.  She really likes our seventeen year old daughter, but I think the action and noise from younger kids would be too much for her.  If you are interested in the rewarding experience of showing a puppy mill girl the good life, I’d love to talk with you!  Please contact placementatragom [dot] org
