Welcome Suzy 09-248 into the RAGOM family. Suzy is 8 weeks old as of last Friday and fostered in North Liberty Iowa. Suzy is the sibling to Hank and Sam.  She received her vaccinations and worming at the same time as the boys. As with her brothers, Suzy will essentially be blind and require a family who will work hard to keep her safe.   Like all puppies she will require puppy and obedience classes.

Suzy has been to the vet and had her wellness check-up along with her microchip and poop exam. All is well.  According to the Dr. who saw Suzy she will not be spayed until she is 6 months old per their preference.

Suzy is a player and very rough. She loves to bite and of course chew, even if it is your ankles or the furniture.  I think she must of given her brothers a run for their money as she can be relentless at times.  We are working very hard on appropriate behavior which includes potty training, chewing on only appropriate items, walking on leash (my RAGOM mentors let me know a harness is best so off to PETCO we went), and crate training.  What is going well:  crate training, now goes up and down stairs very well, eats solid puppy food (fish and potato Natural Balance), knows the door we go out to potty, comes to her name almost consistently (if you have ever had a puppy they sometimes cannot be distracted from what they are doing), and learning to ride well in the car.

Suzy enjoys being outside and attacking my flower garden as well as pulling up the grass by the roots.  I found she does not mind the rain (for all of you in IA that seems to be pretty much every week) or even laying in the wet grass.  She does not like the garden hose when I clean the patio.  She has gnawed on raw carrots and seems to enjoy the challenge and I will add other raw vegs slowly in the future. She sleeps all night which for our house is about 11pm to 7am.  Suzy went with me to a family outing on Friday evening and tolerated the attention well. My nephews had fireworks and for the most part she did not mind them except for the really loud ones. I helped control the noise by cupping her ears with my hands which helped and she barely noticed the big booms. Needless to say she did not sleep well that night and we got up at 2:30 to potty and reassure and back to bed we all went.

We met my sister Sammy, my friend Katie, and a neighbor's dog which was loose without a collar. Plus, a big dog that did not appreciate when he turned around and there you are in their face without warning. Suzy took all of this in stride.

Updates

RAGOM,  just a quick note to update you on Suzy.  Today she turns two and is celebrating with her forever family for the first time.  Suzy is doing wonderfully with us, to know her is to love her.  Suzy is so smart and beautiful, it is easy to forget that she was born with what most view as a disability (lack of sight) and many that meet her do not immediately realize that she does not have sight.   We are delighted that she is ours, or are we hers?  Suzy loves to play ball, chase her fur sister Ashley, her twice a day walks and of course snuggling with us and her fur brother George (she is a hand holder and bed warmer).  Now that the weather is nicer she has discovered that she has a nice yard to run around and investigate.  We are grateful for the breeder that surrendered her to RAGOM, for RAGOM for taking her in, for our vet suggesting RAGOM to us and for her foster mom for raising her until we found her.  You can be assured that Suzy is living the golden life with much love and attention.

Thanks to all the RAGOM volunteers for their dedication.

Suzy went to the volunteer RAGOM picnic this year.  I took her with my Gracie and Katie 09-005.  They all were superb in their behavior and Suzy was introduced to one of the wading pools available for the dogs to cool off in.  I did not think to take my camera so alas I can't share any pics of her first dip.  She did not seem to mind when I put her front feet in and readily allowed me to guide the rest of her in the pool.  To my amazement she just plopped right down like it was the most natural thing in the world.  Suzy just had fun wandering around in the fenced area making friends where ever she ended up never intimated by the new environment at all.

Suzy is now a year old and her last weight was 76 lbs.  Although for the most part her behavior is great there are some puppy behaviors that come out when she is playing and excited like jumping and mouthing.  She responds well to a vocal noise and stops mouthing immediately but the jumping is a work in progress.  She likes to pick up clothes or shoes if you leave them on the floor but never seems to chew on them.  They just get carried  to where ever she ends up usually in the TV room.  Its just those golden genetics to retrieve and return coming through.  We are trying to see how she sleeps out of the kennel or at least with the door open at night but like the pup she is sleep is a waste of time.  Last night I finally got up and put her in the kennel with the door closed always telling her it is bedtime.  With the door closed she settles right down and goes to sleep.

Enjoy the pics I have included.  I love the one with the big stick.  Its as if she is carrying a prize to mom saying "Look what I found ma!"  "Aren't you proud of me".

If you are interested in meeting Suzy let your placement adviser know.  Suzy's sight impairment does not prevent her from being adopted.  A home with a dog buddy and a fence especially the fence is a must for this girls safety.

Suzy here knocking at your door: Life is good.  The weather is great except for the few days of rain.  But, the farmers have corn and oats in so the rain is a must.  Everything is so beautiful and green.  Aaaachoo!  Well, except for the allergies this year are the worst ever.  Once we get past all the buds popping out it will be a little better.   FM got me a special ball.  She called it a kickball we can kick around the yard to play with.  It has bright colors I can't appreciate but it is big enough not to get lost when it flies past me.  We had two but that darn Katie my foster sister put one of her teeth in it.  It made a funny noise and then all the air went out of it.  So Katie is not allowed to be outside when we play with my ball.   Just me and FM having quality fun by ourselves.  FM says she is going to a previously used sport store to get some heavier kick balls that will be sturdier for playing with.  They sure are fun.  FM has included some pictures so you can see me with my special ball.  Enjoy!  A big sloppy kiss and Thank You to my sponsors Carl and Mary. Hope you are enjoying the beautiful weather.

Suzy here:  Did you see my new web picture?  Don't I look marvelous!  FM says I need to start earning my keep and doing my own updates.  Huh?  What is an update.  Isn't one day just like the other.  Eat, sleep, play, nap, and pester FM.  Then we start all over again.  OH!  I forgot the poop and pee routine then we pickup.   At least FM get to do the pick up. HEE  HEE.  She specially likes it when it is wet and thawing outside like it is now.

Monday we went for a very long ride.  I kinda whined because I don't quite get the moving car thing with my lack of vision and not being on my paws.  We met a new family that wants to adopt from RAGOM and join our BIG family.  They want to volunteer like FM does.  They were super great even though I spilled a big bowl of water all over the floor.  How was I to know it was right there in front of me.  The lady there was so patient and understanding you can tell she is a "golden lover" just like FM.  I was very very good except for the couple of times FM told me to get my paws off the kitchen table.  I was just showing them how far I can stretch.  I could tell they were impressed.  Katie really enjoyed all the attention she got from the Mr. in the house plus checking out the entire  yard.  Last week we went walking every day even though it was only mid 20's with the wind chill but the sun was shining and it was beautiful.   I got to plow through all the snow in the yards and make dog angels.  This week it rained and all the snow is gone.  YUK is all FM can say when we come in from the sloppy yard.

FM says to remember to say HELLO to my sponsors Carl and Mary.  Bet you are as ready for spring and summer like FM is.   Thank you every day for thinking of me.  Wish we could get together so you could get kisses in person.  I would come visit it you want.  Just let me know.  Tongue outLaughing

Suzy is doing well.We went on a home visit for a new applicant this past weekend.  Suzy was superb in her behavior with the family and their 2 year old golden mix.  I could not have been more pleased to see how she reacts with other pets and humans.  As far as her jumping behavior some days are better than others but slowly she is getting the idea that if I sit I get lots of affection.  Still some oral mouthing but she is still a pup so that is a work in progress.  She had one accident last week when I was busy and missed her signal so foster mom was the bad girl for not paying attention.  She is such a delight and so full of affection.

I have included some new outside pictures with her ice/snow cubes that she so loves to crunch on or take all over the yard when she can find them.

Let your placement adviser know if you are interested in Suzy. You will be surprised just what a normal dog she is just looking for a loving home with companionship and fun.

Thursday, January 7, 2010

I have sent a couple of new pics of Suzy.  I finally got one with the snow cube in her mouth but this one is not nearly as large as some she picks up.  She enjoys searching for any chunk she can get in her mouth.  She doesn't really play with them but enjoys eating them.

Suzy and the girls got some new beef bones for the holidays and boy did Suzy get an upset tummy.  I thought she had eaten something out of sight but when I talked with the vet tech she said some dogs don't tolerate the richness of the protein in raw bones.  I'll say!  Getting up when the temperature was below zero several times a night for the poopies was the most unfun I have had in a while.  After three to four days (I lost count) and removing the bones her tummy settled down.  She was such a good girl to persistently let me know she needed to go out and never a mess in her kennel.  I was a proud mama.

Suzy has one more person to say  Thank you! to for a her holiday token  That would be Shayna.  Thank you for thinking of my special girl.  Suzy is sending warm (and I mean warm) thoughts to Carl and Mary her sponsors.

As my foster Katie 09-005...  Suzy also wants to find her special forever home this year.  Don't let her being sight impaired intimidate you.  Suzy is every bit the golden and fun to be with and available for adopting.

Wow! I am sure glad the weather has improved and the wind chill has come down.  When it is -10 to -20 it is even too cold to go walking.  Outside time is kept to a minimum and you know when they have had enough when they won't put all their paws on the ground.

Suzy doesn't seem to mind the cold and the snow doesn't seem to intrigue her as much as I thought it would.  What she does like is the snow cubes.  She is always searching out the ones she can break loose and carry around in her mouth.  Some are quite large but that doesn't stop her.  She finds the right angle to pick it up and move it around the yard when she is not chomping on it.

Although the jumping has improved it still continues which I expect given how young she is.  She is very receptive when on leash or when I am holding her collar but not so much when she is loose.  When we approach the door to go outside (there are two) I now leave the leash off so she will respond off leash as well as when on leash.  I wait until she is calm, stops jumping, and even sometimes sits before the door even opens.  I have decided she has heard the words enough to know what I expect so now I skip the words and wait until I get the behavior I want.

I have included some new pictures.  Her favorite position is on the couch over Katie's back or cuddled up against my leg with her head on my lap.  Yes, sometimes she wants to be too excited on the couch especially when I have food but I keep pushing her away and say "NO".  After about three pushes she settles down or moves off to play with the girls.  She is a very loving girl that wants to cuddle but only for short periods as there is too much in life to be doing and only so much time for cuddles.  I can tell she is maturing as the rambunctious puppy that would run headlong into space now shows a more cautious manner when something in her environment is changed.  Once she figures out where things are she has an innate sense as she approaches that area maneuvering around an object.

Enjoy the pictures and a big Thank You to Lori, Kerry, & The Mutts for the Christmas token.  A big  "Hello" to Suzy's sponsors.Hope you have all your shopping done for Christmas.

Suzy had fun this morning with the fresh snow.Tuesday into Wednesday is supposed to be even bigger and I hope to take some new pics of the girls.  Suzy now weighs 67 lbs.  She went with Katie just so we could see if she is at her best weight based on her petite size and the vet says she looks good.  She is suggesting a small cutback on the amount since she is now spayed plus you know how we all become slugs during the winter months.

Suzy met an overnight guest when I did a transport on Friday.  All the girls were exceptional in welcoming this new girl into RAGOM.  Suzy thought what fun there was someone new to tackle, wrestle, and check out.  Suzy got her first food bowl warning from the new girl and I was impressed she backed off and respected the warning since she still has the puppy in your face behavior at times.

It is amazing how much instinctive behavior she has being a golden and blind.  She approached the computer when I was typing and bounced my arm in the air with her nose just like the other girls.  Suzy has the disadvantage of not seeing any of the girls’ behaviors but never the less she is learning.  She is now vocal at the patio door for which I am forever grateful because my only warning was when she would disappear and I would have to check for her.  Now she goes to the patio door, sits, and I hear this little humming from the back of her throat as if to say "Hello I need to potty".

When it comes time to say good-bye to this special foster I know it will be very difficult because she has become so special and it has been so rewarding to have her in my home.  Someone will get a great golden when she is adopted.

Suzy has sponsors and a Christmas Token too!  Carl and Mary you are so special as I know you sponsored one of my other fosters and many other RAGOM pups.  You are the best and I feel lucky and privileged you have chosen Suzy.  Suzy sends Christmas and New Year wishes your way and to all of RAGOMDOM.  Snowball, my Suzy says you are the greatest and you even have the same last three numbers.  Bet you thought she would never notice.  Nothing much gets by our little Suzy. Thank-you for the Christmas Token.

FM here:

Suzy is improving every day with her no jump training.  She listens much better when she is on leash then when running about the yard.  Responding to "come" is a real challenge.  I have paired it with the dropping noise of small amounts of food in her metal bowl which entices her to come with lots of praise.  We sit each and every time we go out the patio doors paired with the command wait.  Her ability to sit and wait gets better each time.  I do this when we exits the kennel also as this is when she likes to be real excited and jump for attention.  There have been times when I thought she was having an identity crisis and thought she was a jack in the box.  Its like she has a spring attached to her butt.  OH WELL puppies are still fun especially when they are looking for hugs and kisses or lay their head on you just to be close.

Having a puppy in the house is like a small child who constantly asks why in that your vocabulary seems to shrink to the same phrases each and every day.  Like children consistency and routine provide opportunities to teach mutual respect for each other as well as becoming familiar with basic commands.  After awhile it just becomes a normal routine to see them respond automatically even without the command being said.  Suzy will get there in time with lots of patience and love.

If you are interested in meeting Suzy let your placement adviser know.

Can you believe how fast this year has gone?!  Suzy will be 6 months old on the 3rd of November.  I have scheduled her spay for next Friday.  I hope this is the only issue or concern potential families may have in regards to her being adoptable.

Suzy is a very confident pup.  She runs and plays like any other pup.  She learns the layout of your house very quickly and even if she bumps into something she just keeps right on going.  Since human years to dog years is 1/7 Suzy is about 3 years by human ages.  She is much like a toddler being a busy little bee playing with the girls.  She exhibits her independence by ignoring the time to come in command and when I go to get her she hops side to side like were playing dodge ball.  It is very hard not to laugh and interact when she is this cute. I know it just reinforces her behavior but pups just got to play!

Suzy was surprised early this week when we had enough snow to stay on the grass.  It was too funny when she stuck her nose in the grass first thing in the morning and made contact with the cold wet snow.  She jumped back as if she had been stung by a bee but that did not slow her down exploring more patches to see if it was the same each time.  It has been as cold and wet here in IA as it is in MN and of course YUK! to the wet dog smell and wet muddy paws.  Oh well here comes winter and then of course spring so might as well get use to it.

Suzy I think is growing up to be a cuddle bug and really enjoys her time on the couch with FM.  Often, especially at the end of the day, she jumps up next to me and sits so her chest is up against my left shoulder.  She then puts her chin on my shoulder so her nose is up against my neck just under my ear at the hair line.  It is funny to feel her warm puppy breaths and she looks so comfortable.  When it comes time for bed I just tell her it is bedtime and find her kennel.  She follows me off the couch and walks to the bedroom right to her kennel.  The only time she is reluctant is when I need to kennel her for a short period during the day when I am off doing errands.   She is not difficult about doing this but shows she would rather be out of the kennel like most days so she can be one of the girls.  I have attached some new pics with my other foster Katie 09-005.  Their play time is less rough or rambunctious.  Often they both lay close together and play the oral, vocal, biting game endlessly.

Suzy is learning the ways of the golden.  While I type she comes up under my arm and bumps me to interrupt my typing.  it is not subtle.  Where do they learn this?  I have no clue.  Certainly not learned from Katie as Suzy cannot see their behavior to mimic them.  Must be something in the genes.

Well that all for now.  I hope you will consider what a positive addition Suzy could make to your family.  I do think she would do much better in a family who already has an established dog.  This would be beneficial in many ways for Suzy's transition into a forever family.  If you would like to meet Suzy with no strings attached talk with your placement adviser.

Suzy is a very happy and energetic youngster. All evidence of being a puppy is gone and she looks more like a miniature golden with her curls, hair hanging from her tail and only a small evidence of feathering around her butt area.

Suzy's retrieval instinct and bringing items to FM is growing. It can be anything from a piece of clothing, toy, or whatever is handy including shoes. She loves to chew on my crocks and they do show a few teeth punctures and chewing on the edges as I teach her what is appropriate and inappropriate chew items.  Suzy will chew on anything if the need arises when left to entertain herself without supervision.  She is very much the typical puppy with it comes to chewing, tasting and exploring her environment.

Sitting to command is consistent as well as no bite. The no bite needs frequent reminders as she has alot of puppy behavior to grow out of yet. She still loves to play, have her belly and chest rubbed, and at times can be quite rambunctious. Quiet down time is becoming more frequent as the frantic needs to play becomes less evident with maturity. She often jumps on the couch to lay along side my leg and tease Katie who is on the floor next to FM's legs. They play the oral vocal game for quite some time until Suzy jumps off the couch.  Did I say she is fearless. She takes a flying leap into the air and can land at least 3 feet into the room hoping it is on top of my Gracie.

Potty training is going well.  Suzy has at least one accident a week (urinating) and no more which is more my fault for being inattentive to her signals.  She eats raw vegetables and enjoys the treat when the girls get theirs.  She sleeps all night though we were up at 2:30 am to potty which is very rare. I suspect something she chewed on in the yard gave her the poopies and she let me know without a doubt her need to go outside. I was very grateful she was so emphatic about the need to potty and very proud she ignored my "quiet" and "go to sleep" commands.  Suzy is crate trained and rarely objects to going in when asked.

Adoptive home needs:

*A fence would be great since she is sight impaired.
*A family willing to take her to obedience classes and include her in their lives despite her visual issues.
*Ideally it would be nice if she were only kenneled about 4 hours and someone to let her out to potty and play to keep her energy level under control. She is at an age with a need to be active and not crated for long periods.

Well Suzy continues to grow fast.  Standing on her hind legs her head now reaches the counter and when she twists it just right she can snag food that is close enough.  Needless to say I have to watch what is on the counter.  My big girls are pretty good about not counter surfing but having a pup in the house certainly changes routines.

Don't ever let anyone tell you walking a pup is not exercise.  I am so pooped by the time we get around the block.  Sometimes we just have to stop and rest or have a little fun so she can be redirected on the task of learning to walk on leash.  I stopped using the harness as she walked like a drunken sailor and weaved from one side of the walk to the other.  I have started using the flat collar and Suzy tends to use her muzzle or shoulder to come into light contact with my leg.  This way she stays fairly close instead of surging ahead.  She is making great progress.  I always use the word forward during the entire walk and say it frequently.  When we get to the street or have to turn or change direction I say "stop" and "sit" and redirect her forward as we continue down the sidewalk.  She is getting very good at these commands.  I hope to add right and left as she become more comfortable.  Suzy is a very confident pup.  She is very courious about her world and being sightless does not even come into play.Suzy enjoys her play time with the big girls.  Sometimes they are so loud playing on the wood floor or being vocal the volume on the TV can be quite loud.

I have included some new pictures so you can see how much Suzy had grown.

Monday, July 20, 2009

Hi Everyone-

Hope you have had a great weekend.  This is the longest number of days we have not had rain in my area but alas it is supposed to rain at the end of the week.

Suzy is growing like a weed.  It is a challenge to get her to slow down enough to eat her meals.  She doesn't like to eat at lunch so she no longer has that nursed puppy fat appearance but more of a lean look.  Suzy thinks the food in the other dog bowls is better than hers but it is the same thing just more raw vegetables because of their diet.  I have put small pieces of carrot and celery in Suzy's bowl which she loves but I want her to eat more of the dog food to maintain her weight for growth.

Potty training is going ok for a puppy this age.  Yes we have had accidents but her kennel is always dry and clean and she sleeps 7-8 hours each night without a peep.  We are working hard on the potty training but my mentors tell me they do not begin to connect outside to potty until they are about 12 weeks.  So.......we go out often when she is loose with the girls to play.  Suzy is very good about going to the bathroom every time we go outside and she is a great pooper and we go out right after she finishes her meals.

Suzy is also learning boundaries with Katie and Gracie.  Suzy knows Katie is the least tolerant for nonsense and rough biting where as Gracie is more patient and seems to enjoy the challenge within reason.  I have included a picture which is mostly a blur as they are in the middle of free for all play and biting.  Suzy has also discovered her voice which comes out when she is in full play with the girls.  It is as if she is saying "Come on this is fun" or "Come get me here I am".

Outside Suzy enjoys typical chewing on most anything that comes her way.  Needless to say my daylilies, mulch, and anything upright gets pounced on and smashed as she makes her way exploring the yard.  It is very funny to watch her jump around the yard and she is so much better sensing where the girls or I am standing.  Often she lays in wait like a cat and then springs up to attack.  She is also getting very good a avoiding being caught when it is time to come in.  Guess I will start to work on the come command soon.  Our walks with the use of the harness are progressing well.  We do better without the big girls when we go it alone.  We continue to work on the no bite command which she is showing a good understanding of what I mean though with puppies you find yourself repeating the command as they push their limits.

Thank you for reading about Suzy and any of our dogs.  They make great companions, walkers, joggers, or just couch potatoes if that is your pleasure.

If you are interested in Suzy or any of the dogs on our web page and are approved to adopt please let your placement adviser know you want to set up a meeting.
