Sydney 09-089

Profile

Sydney has been with me for 48 hours now and she has settled right in like she has always been here. She is sleeping at my feet as I type this. She isn't what I would call a velcro dog but she does like to be in the same room with me at all times. She goes into her crate without a problem. The first night she slept in the crate with the door open all night, last night she slept in the crate until about 4am and then she decided to join the resident dogs and me on the bed, where she slept until a little after 8.

I took her to the vet on Friday afternoon, so now she UTD on all her shots. She is heartworm negative "Yeah" and seems to be in good health for the most part. She has a little skin infection that is being treated with an antibotic and should be gone shortly. And she seems to have a hip problem. I dropped off her x-rays on Friday and the vets office will get back to me with what they find. She doesn't seem to be in pain but she also doesn't run around a lot when she is outside either.
Syd is 15 months old, she had a litter of 11 puppies a little over 7 weeks ago and they are weaned, she is housebroken, crate trained, she gets along with cats as well as other dogs (even 6 lbs. snarkey dogs) and she is quite petite and only weighs about 55 lbs. She is just adorable!! She seems to need a lot of attention, she has no qualms about pushing the other dogs out of the way for pets but when you tell her that she has to take her turn she does listen. She appears to have some training as she sits, lays down and comes when called. However, she really pulls when on a walk; so I will be trying to use a gentle leader and see how that goes next time.

She has free roam in my house when I'm home, even at night; but I do put her in a crate when I'm gone. It's not so much her that I worry about it is my little resident dog that takes it upon herself to be the boss when I'm gone, and sometimes she gets a little power hungry and goes too far bossing everyone around. Until she realizes that Syd is here to stay for awhile I'll be crating her when I'm gone.

Syd met my 9 month old granddaughter yesterday and was a bit curious but didn't seem to be too bothered or interested for that matter by her until she started bouncing in her jumperoo - Syd took off down the hall like a bolt. She eventually came back little by little to see what she was and what she was doing. Otherwise she just ignored her after giving her a good sniff at first.

I'll write later as I discover more about her. One thing I know is she loves to destuff stuffed animals.....

Here are a few new pictures of Syd.  She likes to stand guard at the front window, making sure that nothing suspicious comes around.  She's not much of a barker, I've only heard her once or twice, but she does get excited when someone comes to the door.  It's like she thinks that they came just to see her.

This weekend I will try to take her out with the Gentle Leader and see how she does.  She pulls pretty hard with just a flat collar so I'll try the Gentle Leader.  She is one of the sweetest puppies that I have ever had the pleasure to know.  She has awesome recall, I think she is just so excited that you call her that she comes running as fast as she can to get a pet or two.  She also is completely  housebroken, she has never had an accident at my house.  She kennels easily when I go to work everyday.  I did try leaving her with free roam last night for about 5 hours and it didn't go so good - she chewed a corner off my couch, so she will be kenneled while I'm gone for a bit longer.  She has free roam at night and when I'm home during the day and she has never even tried to chew anything inappropriate.  Actually I have left her with free roam in the evenings before and she has never gotten into anything - not sure what the deal was last night.

She is getting better about grapping my sleeve when she wants attention and also jumping up on me.  Not perfect yet, but she is working on it.  If you want a sweet, young, energetic, beautiful golden that wants nothing better to do than adore you, Sydney is probably your girl.  She likes to be in the same room, almost in the same space as her person.  She prefers to be touching actually.  And how can you resist when she looks up at you with those beautiful sad eyes and all she wants is someone to love her like she loves you.

Monday the vet will be looking at the x-rays that were surrendered with her.  It was thought that she might have a hip problem, but I haven't really seen any signs of it since she has been here.  She hasn't had any trouble going up and down the few steps that I have, she gets up on the couch and bed seemingly without any trouble and she runs around the backyard.  So we'll see what the vet says.  I'll update after I hear what the prognosis is.

Thank you for reading about Sydney and if you think that she might be the perfect companion for your family send your placement advisor an email and let them know.
