A big welcome to Tammy to the RAGOM family!

Tammy is a former puppy mill (PM) breeding mama and she comes to RAGOM with very typical PM characteristics. Tammy has had very little exposure to the outside world so everything in her new foster home is new and scary. I've had her since Saturday and I am already seeing some glimmer of her comfort increasing but we have a ways to go. So far I can tell you she is sweet as pumpkin pie, loves her people and is pretty easily won over, she is a gorgeous girl with great eye contact and a waggy tail. She's already starting to respond to her name and comes very happily when I call her. She likes to go outside and so far has done all her business out there but wants to retreat back inside to her safe spot quickly but she is getting braver and braver.

Tammy is about 6.5 years old and I discovered after reading over her paperwork that we have the same birthday! Tammy will turn 7 on August 24th. Can two Virgos live in the same house? :)

More updates to come and as I get to know her.

Tammy, now known as Tammi Rose went off with her new family today. Below is a pic with her new fursister Brandi and her mom and dad. Ignore the big guy on the right, he's just a picture crasher!

I've already heard from Tammi Rose's mom and she is settling in so nicely. She is in heaven, she has a fur sister, TWO humans with 4 hands to adore her and a big window and yard to watch for squirrels. Doesn't get any better than that for our girl.

Yep, this is what fostering is all about. Another Happy Ending!

Hi everyone from Tammyland!

Tammy continues to grow and just be the best dog she can be! Thanks for all of you who came by to say hello and meet her at Goldzilla last Saturday. I give her so much credit because to her, just about everything is new, so yay for Tammy for being so brave and rising to the occasion!

I’m really surprised Tammy hasn’t had any families come to visit her! She is absolutely the sweetest and gentlest soul! Here is a recap with a list of things to know about Tammy. Please take a look and see if she may fit with your family.

Tammy strutting her stuff at the Goldzilla Foster Showcase

Friday, September 3, 2010

Hello Tammy fans!

Where do I begin on the pure adorableness that Tammy brings to my home? Lately I see her coming out of her shell exponentially and just doing the cutest things. It’s all the nuances that are so sweet.

Tammy celebrated her 7th Birthday on 8/24 with her pals. It was FMs birthday too and I think in dog years we might be pretty close in age! She had a blast having treats, hanging with her friends and watching the squirrels and bunnies.

Mealtime was one of her first challenges when I got her 3months ago. She went from not eating at first, to cautiously eating only if I was beside her and rubbing her back, to enticing her first with a couple of bites from my hand first. Now, I put the food down, she gets up on her feet, walks to the bowl and eats. I can move about and she just keeps on eating and get this: she ate al fresco (outside) yesterday with NO hesitation. Oh my goodness. She also is becoming very treat motivated (for training!). She ALWAYS sits very nicely while she waits for her treat.

Speaking of food, I haven’t updated you on her weight. We finally weighed her again since her first weigh in 3 months ago at 72 lbs. Now she is a petite 58 lbs! Wow, 14 pound sounds like a lot for a little gal to lose, but I think a lot of it was baby weight and her hanging tummy. Now she is toned up, eating right and getting exercise. She is at a good weight for her and is just darling.

Tammy continues to love her luvin’. She seems to be very comfortable going to any human, male or female who will love and adore her. She is also becoming very curious and will take a look around a new area and check things out. One of her favorite pastimes is hanging out in the yard with her gal pal Libby watching for bunnies and squirrels. She does like to chase them in the yard, but she will not do it if we are out and about as she doesn’t want to be far from her pack.

Tammy continues to do well on the leash and does not pull. She loves going for car rides, rides quietly and takes her half of the seat out of the middle so she is usually laying underneath FB Murphy as he stands over her. We have had a number of thunderstorms and she does not react. Last night, as usual she just slept (and sometimes snores) right through it. Yay on no storm-anxiety!

Tammy will be at our Goldzilla event on September 18th! Come and meet her and our other special fosters too!

Below are pictures of Tammy doing her favorites things: Hanging out with her people and pals, going for walks, watching for bunnies and squirrels, rolling in the grass, practicing her retrieving skills and cooling off in the water.

Hello Tammy fans!

Tammy was just so cute last night so it inspired me to do an update. She one-by-one decided to take a toy out of the basket down the hall and pile them up on her bed in the bedroom. She was a busy little bee and stayed on task. This is so significant because she has NEVER done that in the 3 months I’ve had her! Usually, she is right with me in whatever room I’m in and doesn’t leave my side. She was doing this the entire time I was sitting in the living room. I could peak around the corner and see her stick her head in the basket, grab a toy and head down the hall to the bedroom, back and forth. Such confidence! She seemed to be inspired by my resident dog Murphy who out of the blue decided a squeaker had to taken out of a toy. Once he took care of his business, she proceeded on with her project. So I thought I would share the pure cuteness this girl brings to my home.

Tammy just continues to be pure joy and an easy dog. She is still looking for her perfect home:

  1. Another large breed confident dog in the house to guide her
  2. A fenced in yard
  3. No children under 8 or so
  4. Your love and attention to give her the life she deserves

Tammy will be at the PetSmart in Plymouth this Saturday from 11:30-2! Come and meet this special girl.

She who has the most toys....wins!!

Hello Tammy fans!

Where do I begin on how sweet and loving this girl is. She has come so far in the 2+ months I have had her. I am so proud of her!

I took Tammy and my resident dog to Nebraska with me for the whole week due to family urgency. In spite of all the unfamiliarity and change in routine she has been an angel. We're staying at my mom's assisted living apartment and the staff couldn't be more enamored with her. Somebody wanted to snatch her up right then and there. They have been spending time on their own in the apartment when I go see my mom and the staff says they never hear a peep or often they come in the apt. and the dogs don't even look up. They are getting a lot of great attention, we play ball every day and go swimming in the nearby lake. Tammy has been so adaptable and easy! Always happy to see me as I come in and out, but just goes right with the flow. Nobody can believe that she hasn't been snatched up yet. Lucky me, just longer that I get to have her!

Tammy continues to "train" to be a retriever. See new pics. She is so cute when she goes and gets the ball she runs super fast back to me with it with her happy dog face on. She is so proud of herself.

Her recall is still excellent, walks great on leash without a gentle leader. Her fur is filling in so nicely and now she has super blond curly feathers on her hind legs and her tail. Very unique color combination with her red and blond and she is soft and gorgeous.

I love Tammy so much I only want to find her the perfect home she so deserves. If you would like to meet this almost perfect companion dog contact your placement coordinator.

Hello Tammy fans! I’m doing an update a little sooner than usual because I just wanted to report how great Tammy is doing and it feels like we’ve had a good week of breakthroughs for her!

Tammy is looking as healthy as ever. Her last weigh in was about 68 lbs. but I’m guessing she might be a little less than that and she seems to be at a good weight. The thinning spots she had on her sides when she came in are filling in so nicely! Her coat is quite gorgeous and soft.

Tammy is getting braver and braver every day. She actually is eating normally consistently, a huge leap from where she started from. She now waits with anticipation for her food and when I put it down, she will give it a thought for a second, then get up on her feet and eat her chow right out of her dish. I used to have to really coax her to eat, she would lie down next to her bowl to eat and I would stay next to her to comfort her and sometimes have to get her started by hand feeding her her first bite or two. She used to stop eating if I got up and moved away from her but now I can move about the kitchen and she will continue to eat. She’s got a good appetite and always finishes what’s in her bowl. Tammy is also getting the hang of treats and is really enjoying them. She will often sit before I ask her to when she sees them come out. She ate out of a Frosty Paw dish for the first time this week!

Tammy is relaxing more and more in new situations. She is also learning to share the love and actually lets another dog in her presence get some attention without her butting in. This is still work in progress but she is responding well to our training. Tammy is learning to sit nicely for treats and for attention.

I have been working with Tammy on retrieving the ball to see if we can pull out the “R” (retriever) gene in the girl. She seems to have it! She’ll run and get it and happily bring it back to you and ‘give it’ if you call her. It is so cute and she puts on her happy face. She also is really enjoying chasing and watching the squirrels go up trees or bunnies that are brave enough to come through the yard.

Tammy has had free roam of the house day and night within two days of when I got her and only chews (sometimes rips) toys. Otherwise she has never touched or moved anything in the house and I completely trust her. She came to me potty trained and has had only two accidents that were my fault—she had to go and FM wasn’t paying attention to let her out. We are still working knowing her signals when she needs to be let out.

Tammy is just pure joy and my best friend. She is such a good girl and sweet and gorgeous as can be. If you are looking for a great companion, contact your placement coordinator to meet her.

Tammy will be at the Alimagnet Dog Park event in Burnsville this Saturday from 11-3. Come on by if you would like to meet this special girl.

Hmmmm, I could get used to this!

Hello Tammy fans and welcome again to the Adventures of Tammy. Tammy continues to do so well and grows each day. She is just the sweetest girl and just wants to be your best friend. It is so cute when I come home from work and she is so happy to see me. When she gets excited she whacks her wagging tail against the cabinets so hard and a couple of times she has made the tip bleed. I guess there is an official name for that called “Happy Tail”. To prevent her from hurting herself now I reach down and scoot her bottom away from the cabinets. She is just so happy she can’t help herself.

Tammy follows me everywhere. She isn’t exactly a velcro dog, but she follows me just enough to be in eye shot. If I get up and to get a glass of water, she will follow me to the kitchen and then follow me right back out to the living room. She is usually very good about just lying down by your feet and hanging out. She will ask for attention, sometimes panting frantically. That is especially triggered when my resident dog is moving in for his attention. I get her to calm down before I will give her the attention she wants. She is learning good manners and learning to share the attention with other dogs. I think coming from the puppy mill she really had to fend for herself, so her natural instinct is to guard anything she regards as valuable. Since I’ve had her, she has stopped guarding her dish and space, but will guard a treat/toy which is pretty common and my resident dog does the same but it is easily managed and it never escalates. I will continue to work with her to stop guarding for all the attention. She does this usually by trying to stand or push in between me and the other dog or by pawing or mouthing me. As soon as she does that, I stop, put my hands out of reach and look away until she backs off. She will get petted as soon as she is sitting or lying nicely. She is improving every day.

Tammy is getting very good on leash, learning to walk in a straight line instead of in front of you, doesn’t pull at all and really enjoys her walks. She is getting very curious and she really perks up when she sees a bunny. She will chase it if given the chance. She doesn’t pull or jump away as we pass other people and dogs around the neighborhood.

I’ve been working with Tammy to fetch the ball and it is so cute. She will retrieve it if I only throw it a few feet. Anything further is just too far away to go from me. When she does retrieve it she will bring it back when I call her and very softly releases the ball when I put my hand on it and say ‘give it’. She’s usually good for about 5 tosses and then likes to take a break. She continues to like the water a lot, but is not too sure about swimming in it. So far, she just plops right down and lays in it to cool off. She will follow me a little further out if it’s not over her head.

Just a recap of Tammy’s needs:

  1. Another confident dog in the house for leadership
  2. A fenced in yard
  3. No small kids under 8 or so.
  4. Your love and attention

If Tammy’s needs are met she really is an easy and low maintenance dog. She very much wants to please you and do the right things. She is still finding her way since leaving the puppy mill and as long as you are consistent with her, love and guide her she will be your perfect companion.

If you think Tammy would fit in your home, please contact your placement director.

Tammy taking it all in at the Pride Festival

Monday, June 21, 2010

Hi everyone, welcome back to the "Adventures of Tammy"!

Tammy continues to do so well as we introduce her to old and new situations. When Tammy is in a new situation she almost always gets nervous, but I'm seeing it happening less and less and when it does, she calms down quicker. You can always tell when she is nervous as she will pant very hard and try and jump up to me for comfort. She is eating two good meals a day but she still likes FM to stay near her to reassure her no one is going to 'get' her while she is eating. I always feed her in the same room with my resident dog Murphy, and the truth be told, if opportunity arose, Murphy would jump at the chance to steal her food if he senses an easy mark. Murphy is learning it's not ok and certainly is never allowed since FM is always monitoring the situation.

Tammy is just a little love bug and loves to be with FM wherever she goes. It is so cute when I get home from work and she is just beside herself with excitement to see me. I can hear her through the door as I unlock it, making little Tammy sounds of excitement and she makes sure she gets full love and attention as I come in the door.

Speaking of Tammy sounds, she is a tail thumper meaning when she is standing next to furniture or cabinets etc and she wags her tail with glee, the tail thumps hard. Also, she makes the cutest little groans when she is lying down near me and relaxing with a big sigh. Also, every now and then I hear a soft little snore when she is sleeping at night.

One other thing I discovered about Tammy is that she has the prey drive! Oh yes, her leash slipped right out of my hand to run after the bunny in the yard. As soon as she realized I wasn't connected to the other end of the leash, she was right back. Thankfully she has fantastic recall.

Tammy got a cute new pink girl collar and I think she is feeling especially sassy this week with her new look!

This weekend was action packed with some new experiences for her. You can see by the pictures how brave and adventurous our girl is getting.

Tammy will be at the RAGOM booth for the Pride Festival. Watch this site for her appearance time!

Tammy continues to do well. She is just soaking up the love and getting comfortable with her new world. She gets braver and braver every day, but like typical puppy mill dog she has her good days and her bad days. It's a lot of 2 steps forward, one step back. But in any case she is going in the right direction!

Tammy is consistently eating well but still is a little nervous at first. She has to think about it for a minute before she will dive in. I think she is waiting to be sure it's safe to eat the food. She does like it when FM sits next to her and pats her back while she eats as it seems to assure her it's all ok. I'm slowly weaning her from that and it's going well. I haven't heard her growl at Murphy if he gets near her space or dishes in quite a while so I think that's a sign that she is getting more comfortable and knows she no longer has to guard her resources.

We go for daily walks and she is still seems a little stressed so we keep them short. She does the best when we go for walks with my friends and their pack so the more the merrier and she is learning. She doesn't pull on the leash and just follows along. She is great about doing all her business on walks too!

Tammy gets along with every dog she meets, but at the end of the day, she likes her people the best. If she has a choice to be with me or my resident dog, Murphy, FM trumps most of the time. She likes to follow me around and it's so cute in the morning she is all about following me back to the bedroom as I get ready for work. She likes to 'help' me pick out my outfit. :)

If you are looking for a little love bug to soak up your love and attention Tammy could be your gal. Contact your placement person if you are interested in meeting her!

Tammy will be at Rally for the Rescues on Saturday from 11-1. See RAGOM's home page for info.

Tammy relaxing outside with the pack

Tuesday, June 1, 2010

Wow, what a difference a week can make! Tammy is doing just great. She went from being afraid of walking through doors, the ceiling fan spinning overhead and eating her supper to taking walks outside in the big wild neighborhood with airplanes flying overhead, going for car rides and attending parties and taking treats directly from my hand.

Tammy is still discovering her big new world and is really being brave. What’s kind of neat to see is every time I take her on an outing she is that much braver when she gets home. I see her getting more and more comfortable moving about the house and with our every day routine. She has not had one accident and at this time, I am able to leave her free roam in the house while I'm gone with no issues.

Her appetite hasn’t been great since we got her, but I see it getting better too. She likes her kibble, green beans, bananas, cottage cheese and salmon. Yum! Tammy does like to protect her food from my resident dog with a warning but it has never escalated. Maybe she had to fight to get her share back in the puppy mill days? She is learning that she will get her food here so I see her getting less concerned about guarding.

I took Tammy to the vet last week and she weighs 72 pounds which may be a couple of pounds too much, but she is in the range. Tammy is now spayed and all went well so no more babies for her! Tammy has a beautiful reddish soft coat. She has some thinning on her sides that I expect to fill in now that she’s getting good food, fresh air and some exercise.

Since Tammy came from a puppy mill, her permanent home will need a confident resident dog in the house, no young children and a fenced yard. Tammy is a very loving dog and loves your attention and always wants to know where you are and she is starting to follow me around the longer she is here and getting braver.

If you are interested in meeting a sweet love sponge, contact your placement coordinator.
