Tober, as we call him, is a 1 year old neutered puppy, house trained, up to date on vaccinations - and a happy boy! He is accustomed to living with a small breed dog and a three year old, as well as having free roam of his country home area. He has a BIG heart, loves to run and play, and although shy at first, is a snuggle bunny in short order. Tober is very smart and will continue to learn quickly via positive motivational reinforcement methods. More to come as we get to know him better!

Jennifer and Bev,

I have been meaning to e-mail you both to let you know how great Toby is doing. Toby (aka Tober, Tobeliah, Toberone, the Tobester, “Boy”…) was a match made in heaven for us. He is doing so well. He has passed Level 1 and Level 2 of obedience training at the Animal Humane Society in Golden Valley and Level 3 is going very well. There have met many RAGOM dogs in his classes. He goes on training walks with Todd every morning and then a few times a week he goes on runs with Todd! We take him to the off-leash park almost every night (we met another RAGOM dog there tonight!). He loves to swim at the cabin and is perfect riding in the car. He hasn’t had one accident or any destructiveness since he came to his new home (and he has free roam of the house)! He lost his entire undercoat (bags upon bags) and is a little guy now! You may not even recognize him! He doesn’t have the Samoyed mix look any longer, but more of a Border Collie mix appearance.

We just wanted to let you know how much we appreciate everything you do for RAGOM and how fortunate we feel to have been matched with our boy. Thank you!

A most amazing thing about Tober is that his coat doesn't shed like my resident dogs do! My Dalmatian 'Spot' (visible snuggling under the covers) seems to weave each individual hair into the upholstery, and my long term foster Mandy seems to just drop curls of hair as she moves about - but Toby doesn't! I have no blonde Golden hair decorating my furniture or my carpets. What a pleasant surprise!! He looks like a duck when the snow lands on him and melts from his warmth...little drops of water all beaded up. (Well, I guess he doesn't really look like a duck, but the water rolls off of him in little beads!)

Tober has mastered the 'sit' cue, doing it for treats on request. I haven't moved on to asking him to sit without a treat yet, but know he'll be asked to do it this upcoming week when he visits Amber and Oak's home while I follow through on spring break plans made before he came into foster care. He'll be enjoying a week of puppy trick training, as well as the company of an 11 year old boy who already adores him! When he returns to me, it will be time for him to begin looking for a home of his own where he'll be loved and pampered! Tober has a luxurious coat, thick, dense, and feathery soft. (although his parents were both Goldens, there must have been some Samoyed in one of their background for him to have this fabulous coat!) This means he’ll need a home who will enjoy brushing him, and who if they are a lake swimming household will bathe and dry him after any lake swims he may enjoy in the summer! (Toby would get ‘hot spot’s from his coat not being washed and fully dried after swimming and that would be painful him). He of course keeps his coat in tip top self grooming shape on his own!

He also has a strong desire to be by me, so I’ll assume it will be the same with the person or people in his forever home. Because of this I had considered that he may not need a fenced yard, until one of the first birds of spring caught his attention the other day. I’m now committed to Toby’s new home having a physical fence to keep him safe from running into traffic, or wandering freely as he did back in his days in farm country!

An ideal home for Toby will be one with compassion and patience, a desire to allow him to learn thus one that will give him an opportunity to go to puppy school, and onward; a home with children past the age of 'accidentally' pulling his ears, tail, etc., or no children in the home at all; an environment with another dog in residence and a work schedule that doesn’t exceed a 9 hours between leaving the house and returning.- or- home with a built in daily playmate, neighbor, or dog park access and a work schedule that has humans at home most of the day, and of course some of the evening time!

Did I mention that Tober weighs in at 42 pounds? The vet states that he's at an optimum weight, and most potentially at full adult size. Although he loves to play with other dogs, he also seeks out individual time and enjoys curling up on the soft circular pet bed. He's so gentle and loving, wanting to be near you, and appreciative of being spoiled!! He's a very special boy...
