Toby 05-308

Profile

10/3/05: Toby and I met two days ago and already we are inseparable, or I should say that he is glued to my side! I do not know much about him other than that he is about 5 years old, is probably part Yellow Lab and is slightly overweight. Toby has been kind and gentle around all people, including children, and dogs (male and female). The resident cat immediately accepted him; he seems to have a way with cats. He loves to be petted and his tail is almost always wagging. Toby is doing well walking on leash, and he is adapting well to living in a house, both of which may be new to him. I do know that he is not up to date on vet visits and he did not like the bath I gave him last night. I will include more details in my next update after I have had him to the vet.

We wanted to share with you that Toby continues to do very well with us. There are no lingering signs from the heartworm treatments that was provided for him and the vet has given him a clean bill of health this spring. He's completely settled in with us and has enjoyed long walks, cross country skiing, and sitting in the sun at the local coffee shop. He has lots of dog pals in our neighborhood and so has someone to play with nearly daily

Toby had his first visit to a northern MN lake cabin with us last weekend. He travelled extremely well for several hours in the car. When he got to the lake, we knew he would take well to the water, but he also showed us his brave side by diving from the end of the dock to fetch sticks. He also joined us in fishing on the lake.

We've attached a couple of pictures for you.

We can't thank you enough for bringing Toby to us. He has been a complete joy.

Toby is doing very well. He is extremely well behaved in the house, except for getting up on the furniture (forgivable). He settled into a nice routine of meals and found a place where he likes to sleep. For the first few days we needed to stand with him to get him to eat, but now he eats as soon as we put the food in the bowl. The first few nights he wanted to be in the bedroom with us, but now he sleeps in the next room.

He's a funny dog, in that he sometimes seems to lose us in our house. He doesn't seem to be able to sniff us out. He'll wander around looking for one of us and won't be able to find us ( in our not so large house).

He's slowly gaining self confidence so that he isn't so much Velcroed to us. He has learned to sit calmly in the same room without needing to be constantly petted.

He's been up to visit the vet we are going to use to finish the heartworm treatment. He has his next appt for Dec 15. The vet said that he can probably start getting a little more exercise now that the last major heartworm treatment is behind him.

He's a joy to walk with and we are starting to take him on a little bit longer walks. He has met our neighbor dogs and loves to play

I was away on a business trip and Toby spent the week with another foster family. I was told he behaved very well and was a joy to have around. He had plenty of people, an adult Golden Retriever and two Golden puppies to socialize with - he probably had a pretty good time! I know that I sure missed the big guy when I was gone and we both seem to be glad to be together again. We have been to several Ragom events at PetCo and Toby has made some great friends. For the last six weeks Toby has been an excellent ambassador for Ragom and I am grateful to know him!

Toby went with me to the Fridley PetCo on Saturday and he was such a good boy! Everybody liked him and he liked everybody. Toby loves to receive attention and he had lots of people to pet him. It is fun to go places with him because he rides so well in the front seat of the truck, but now he thinks he is going with me every time I leave. Toby has probably lost a few pounds and he seems to look healthier already. I think that someone without a fenced yard can adopt Toby. He seems to be the type that will stay around and that was how he lived before I began fostering him. I have discovered that Toby will play fetch with a tennis ball; he brings it back every time but is not obsessed with playing ball.
