Trigger is a 4.5 year old AKC neutered male. Trigger’s birthday is 10-25-03. Trigger has been at our home for a week now. He is a great dog. He and our two resident dogs and cat have bonded with him quite well. More so the dogs than the cat J, but he and the cat co-exist nicely, and he plays non-stop with my lab all day. We have had no resource guarding problems with Trigger.
Trigger’s surrendering owners felt that he has some emotional issues that they are not capable of dealing with. They lived very close to the airport and he was terrified of the planes. Generally, he’s quite nervous around new things, especially if they’re loud. He had also started chewing objects around the surrendering owner’s house about 2 months ago (right about the time their toddler started walking). Trigger lived with a two year old and a one year old child and was very nervous around them. He has never bitten anyone, but he has given warning growls when the kids pull his tail. His surrendering owners were heartbroken to give him up, but they had to because of the risk he posed around their children. He also suffers from a licking granulomas as a result of his anxiety/nervousness.
Trigger is crate trained (just say “kennel” with a treat), walks VERY well with a Gentle Leader (on your left side only J), knows sit, stay (needs some work), fetch, drop (needs some work), off, hush, treat, and heel. Trigger does like to carry a toy (or anything he can pick up, shoes, socks, slippers, gloves, etc.) in his mouth, but that is because he is a Golden Retriever. He has never chewed anything at all. His surrendering owners left him out and used his kennel. I’m also doing both. When I leave for an hour or so, he is out free to roam. Anything over an hour and he has been kenneled.
In the week that I’ve had Trigger he has gone from pacing and not sleeping his first night to sleeping quietly at the end of the bed with our other dogs and lying calm with no pacing at all. Trigger’s granulomas has not been touched in a week!! It is heeling nicely. I haven’t experienced a loud plane or a loud thunderstorm with Trigger yet, but I can see them potentially being a problem because he does get very nervous around loud noises (vacuum, shoveling, and hammering--I hung a picture). All in all, Trigger just needs a TON of attention, reassurance, and LOTS of exercise. He is very happy living with other dogs (he lived with one other Golden with his surrendering owners), and he needs to be walked and played with daily to be happy! BUT, he is not comfortable around small children!
He has met the neighbor boy who is 8 and seems to like him a lot. They played fetch in the backyard, and everything went very well. However, on Wednesday we walked with a friend of mine and her 3 year old daughter and Reggie (a 10yr Golden), and Trigger ignored the 3yr old and would not get too close to her. But, on our walk with a total of 4 dogs, two adults, and a 3 year old, he was great. He kept to my left as we walked, and there were no signs of any issues at all! Trigger is a GREAT LOVABLE dog!!! But he should not go to a house with small children or to a family planning on having kids in the near future.
Trigger loves going to the dog park! He meets and greets other dogs (male and female) very well. He keeps trying to play with the other dogs (RAGOM foster dogs aren’t allowed off-leash), but his leash keeps getting in the way. We mostly walk at the dog park and meet people and other dogs.
We went to our vet at PetSmart/Banfield on Saturday and he met and greeted everyone very well! He is UTD on all shots and looks great! He receives a lot of compliments on how beautiful and well behaved he is!!!
More to come about this great dog very soon!
