Hello RAGOM folks!

I haven't updated on Tucker since 2013, and that's too bad because he was a wonderful dog who brought joy and lots of laughs to so many.

It is with melancholy that I inform you, Tucker passed on 5/25/2020 at age 13 (DOB 3-1-07, I picked him up on 3-8-08). We put him down after a 3-month "hospice" (we kept him comfortable after a diagnosis of intestinal lymphoma). He passed peacefully with his two favorite people (my wife and me) holding his paws and petting him.

Tucker rolled with the punches of us starting a family with my daughter being born in 2016. He wasn't too hot on the idea of kids at first, but came to realize that they drop food and feed him so he warmed up pretty fast.

We also adopted a Shiba Inu named Beijo from my brother-in-law who gave up on him (training a Shiba is really hard lol). He quickly became Tucker's best friend. When Beijo died of throat cancer in 2019, Tucker was never quite the same. His bond with him was very strong, and showed us all how loving Tucker was with everyone close to him in his life.

We're going to take a pause on dog ownership until the kids are a little older and can walk them with us. But on my recent BWCAW trip, I missed Tucker terribly, as he loved going there more than anywhere else - the sight of other dogs brought a lump to my throat as I thought of our good times up there. He was our outdoor buddy, and can't be replaced, only remembered.

We're planning a small dog funeral to spread his ashes in his favorite swimming spot, and smoking a turkey outside as smoked turkey was his favorite food and he'd do literally anything to get a plate of it (which we always gave him).

Thank you for making the experience with Tucker over the past 12+ years possible! It's the end of an era but I have so many great memories that will last my entire life.

Hi Ragom folks!

Tucker continues to be a great dog. He's now 6 and a half years old and shows almost no signs of slowing down. He will run, swim, and walk for hours on end and still just loves every aspect of life! He continues to be an inspiration to those he meets and becomes friends.

He's even a great patient. He developed a nasty ear infection but took his treatments "like a dog" and his ear looks much, much better. Who would like a bunch of liquid being dropped in their ear twice a day? Well, Tuck doesn't, but he was great!

Thanks again, Ragom, for connecting us with "Big T!"

Now that we're getting into fall, the second season of golden/lab shedding begins!  I like to tell people that Tucker sheds heavily twice a year, for six months each.  I like his winter coat, though, and I know he's happier in the winter to be outside romping around!

Tuck continues to mature into a calm adult dog.  He's still exuberant, and my wife commented the other night how he's "ready to go" at a moment's notice no matter what's going on weather wise, or otherwise!  I've been working nights in September and as such, our routine is all messed up.  Has that phased Tucker?  NO!  He wants his run and he wants his walk every day!  Good thing he's around to keep me in shape.

Speaking of "my wife commented," I recently got hitched.  Tuck has bonded even more with Carolina, and her with him, now that she's a full time member of the pack.  Lucky dog, he gets two people who love walking him around all the time.  Tuck likes helping her garden, and seems a little more protective of her than of me.  Good boy.  Pic is of her and her new buddy!

I continue to advocate for RAGOM when people are talking about getting a dog, particularly a golden or lab type retriever dog.  The whole time, I felt like I was working with good people who had genuine, good intentions.  Browsing the pet section of craigslist makes me sad, to see all these people selling dogs because they're tired of them.  Those problems will always be present, but thank you, RAGOM, for doing your part.

Since I'm sitting here on call for work (it's 1:15 am), I think I'll wake Tuck up and take a nice night time stroll through the neighborhood.  Tuck will be stretching out as soon as I think walk in his presence.  They just have a way of knowing, it's so cool.

As I type this, “Big-T” is chilling out on the carpet, waiting for me to take him for a walk. He’s a four year old (as of March 1st) young adult dog, handsome and strong as ever. He’s still my main running partner and best friend.

My girlfriend Carolina, Tuck, and I went camping last weekend at Forrestville state park. What a blast! Tucker had such a great time. Carolina has been around him for over a year now and has really bonded with him. I’ll admit, she’s a bit like me toward dogs; she’s the boss and demands mutual respect. Tucker really loves her and gets upset when she leaves our “pack” if we’re out hiking or walking or whatever, but in true Big-T fashion, he snaps right out of it and gets on with living in the moment.

Everywhere I go, I get compliments about how he’s so kind, so obedient, and so good looking! When I tell people he’s a rescue dog, they sometimes think I’m messing with them. I always tell them Ragom has some really great dogs, and really great foster volunteers. Tuck is just one shining example of that.

I have some pictures from the trip, more of him swimming, of course. Everyone loves him and considers him an important part of their lives. My stepdad had major surgery recently, and Tucker was his therapy dog of sorts. He was extra gentle with him, like he knew he needed to heal. I have many other touching personal stories about him, but I’ll save those for future updates!

Thank you, once again, RAGOM.

Hi -

I recently contacted the "foster mom" of my RAGOM dog and she informed me to send a happy ending update! Since Tucker (08-058) is so young (3.5 years) it's hardly an "ending" but here goes...

I first met Tuck when my brother and I went to Theresa's house to meet him. He was a big, one year old dog (and is even bigger now!), and a bundle of energy. He hardly paid any attention to us, he was busy bugging his FM for treats and wrestling with the resident dog. Still, I was looking for a high energy dog to be my walking and jogging partner, maybe a hunting partner, but for sure a fun loving dog with "spit and vinegar" in his system. Well, I told Theresa "I'll take him" and we arranged to pick him up the following Saturday morning. He was the first and only RAGOM dog I met...

My dad and I went down to Chanhassen to get him around 8 am that morning. We were photographed together and then set out for a walk on this very cold March (2008) day. Tuck didn't know much about walking on a leash and kind of freaked out a couple times. I still have no clue why. Anyway, he jumped into my vehicle and off we went! As soon as we got home, I gave him a leashed "tour" of my house, and we set off on another walk to explore the new neighborhood, which was likely his first excursion into an urban area. Anyway, we walked for two hours, I then got him home and got some food in his belly. He took his first poop in the yard, too. He whined to come back in but we ignored him and he did his business. A fast adjuster!

At first, he was disobedient and insecure. It took a couple weeks for him to figure out who was the boss, that my home was his new one, and where his place in our pack was. But, I left him home all day while at work that first week, no kennel, and he did great! We started obedience school in May and he just loved it. It made a huge difference; he became a better listener and generally just "figured out" what I expect of him and what his role is.

Later that spring, he and I got into a routine where we went walking every single day before work. We've now been jogging, but that morning time is just ours and easily my favorite time of the day. We do it rain or shine, cold or hot, snow or ice... Every single day. It gets both of us on the right page to attack our days. Me at the office, him napping and patrolling the house. When I get home he walks again with me or a family member. At least an hour per day of walking/running/hiking/swimming/off leash fun/dog park/etc. has turned him into a very fit, calm and submissive dog who is simply likable, and a joy to be around.

Recently, my brother moved out of the house. It was a big adjustment for Tucker and I, but as usual, we got through it. Our routines are a little different, but Tucker makes the perfect roommate. He doesn't steal food or rummage through the garbage. He sleeps in the basement, but comes upstairs when he hears me walking around. Tail wagging, he gets some food and water, a quick visit to the backyard, and we're off! He even starts stretching when I grab my shoes, he knows full and well that we're going jogging.

What I've learned about Tucker, and likely all dogs, is that bad days and good days come and go, girlfriends come and go, changes take place, tragedies occasionally transpire, and people, places and things enter and exit our lives. One thing that is constant, though, is a wagging tail and contagious excitement and happiness, every time I come home from anywhere. Besides that, he's an enthusiastic travel companion, camping buddy, canoeing partner, and just all around good friend. He's irreplaceable and has brought joy not only to my life, but to the lives of others as well.

Thank you, RAGOM, for bringing Tucker and myself together. He's impacted lots of lives in a positive way and will continue to do so throughout his long life.

Matt and Tucker

Happy Birthday Tucker!  Tucker is one year old and he celebrated his first birthday with his foster family.  We were priviledged to celebrate his special day with him.  Tucker made his birthday list and had the following wishes listed:  a kong full of treats, a marrow bone, two new tennis balls, hugs and kisses and a forever family.  He got all of his wishes, except for the last one :  (  I told him we are waiting for that special family that will love him forever and he looked at me with those big, brown eyes and I could have sworn he said "Okay, I will be patient because I like hanging out here and I know my new family will be worth the wait!".  Boy, those eyes can really talk, huh!

Tucker says he would like the following in his forever family:  someone who will be his master committed to exercising him, someone who will take him to obedience classes because he is so smart and can show that intelligence to everyone, a fenced yard so he can be outside and leisurely sniff around and not get lost, someone who will appreciate his sweet and sometimes goofy personality and lastly someone who will cuddle and love him forever.  We know that special family is out there somewhere.  Until then, Tucker will be hanging out with us, playing with his girlfriend Penny, enjoying being outside laying on the deck, eating snow and chasing balls!

Thank you for following Tucker's journey.

Memorial services were held for Bambi last Saturday morning, it was a lovely, sunny day.  The injuries obtained by the pulling, slobbering, fighting and rough play were just too much for her little stuffed body to handle.  With the recent injury to her leg and subsequent surgery, she was at a disadvantage as her ability to run away from the resident chewers was greatly compromised.

Bambi was a good deer.  With her brown thread sewn eyes and her soft acrylic furr, she was a lovely deer specimen.  She filled up many hours of playtime with her flexibility to be flipped in the air and undergo many tug-of-war rounds with the furr butts.  She lived the good life in the basket next to her surviving friends Mad Kitty, Cranky Cat and Suspicious Chicken along with many other beloved dog toys.  Bambi had her spot at the top of the basket, a prime spot for immediate chewing by every pupper.  Being the top pick for play time was what eventually lead to her demise.  It will be hard to replace Bambi, although available this week at Target for $9.97.

A picture has been attached displaying Bambi and her best friend Tucker. We will miss you Bambi.

It has been over a week since I have been in my foster home!  I am thoroughly enjoying wrestling and playing with Penny, running around the back yard and hanging out with my foster family.  They tell me I am just the sweetest guy with a GR personality even though I have short hair!  FM says I am so soft and beautiful (well, handsome) and she really has fallen in love with me!  It is really not that difficult to fall in love with me, I am really, really the Greatest pupper in the world!  FM whispered in my ear last night that someone better adopt me soon because she loves me so much!

FM says that I am looking for a family that has a fenced yard, someone who will take me to obedience classes, someone who will take me on walks or better yet, if you are a runner, SOLD!  I am also requiring my forever family to have a closet that has treats!  That is my favorite part of my foster family’s house!

Don’t forget that I will be at PetCo in Friendly Fridley.  Me and my new friend “Snowie” will be coming together!

Thank you for following my story,

Tucker

FM is letting me do my own update today!  Well, I went to the veterinary office yesterday and I was pretty anxious.  First, that thing they call a Gentle Leader, yeah, HATE IT!!!  I only like it when I am walking and I do pretty good, but when I am inside, I like to greet everyone, human and furr alike and that is apparently not allowed (FM is a party pooper)!  Needless to say, FM and I got “sent to the corner” and I was not too happy about that!  I liked the techs and they said I was so handsome and they gave me lots of treats :  )  I got micro chipped and had a “poop sample” done, got the A-ok on my ears, no infections!  FM tells me that Penny Rose and I get to do a really fun thing on Wednesday all day, so I will report on what that is later.  I have some new “facts”about me!  We found out that my real weight is 78.6 pounds, I am a big guy!  I have really nice teeth too!!!

I am a GReat sleeper and FM says that she loves that about me!  The other night I wandered downstairs and plopped myself down in the kitchen for the night and in the morning I came upstairs, jumped on FM’s bed and just sat there.  FM thought that was so sweet  :  )  I love to wrestle with my foster sister, but she is on the border of being a “senior dog”, so she usually quits before I want to  :  (  We play ball outside and we also like to hang out on the deck and look at what is going on in the neighborhood.  There is neighbor furr butt, she looks like me because she has short hair, and I like to watch her chase the ball too!

I went to work with FM on Sunday and although I wanted to explore, she closed her door and I rested in her office.  When we left the office I went in the elevator with some other people, now that was funny!

Thank you for reading up on sweet, handsome, adorable ME!

Love and puppy kisses,
Tucker AKA Tucky, Long Legged Boy, Silly Boy and Puppy Face!

Isn't that the "sweetest little baby face"?

Fast asleep....

Saturday, February 2, 2008

Tucker has been with us for a couple of days and has settled in nicely.  He is fabulous at night and sleeps all the way through.  As soon as everyone is laying down, he finds his sleeping spot (last night it was on the bed) and he lets out a big sigh!  Tucker has barked a few times and it is very LOW!  He was barking at the neighbor dog, our human neighbor across the street and also at my son when he came home late last night!  I would bark at him too, he is kinda scary!!!  This afternoon he left my side and curled up on the couch.  That was a wonderful sight to see that he is feeling more comfortable and feels safe to venture out to other areas of the house without someone with him.  He really is still just a puppy is a big body!

Tucker weighs 70 pounds and there is not an ounce of fat on him - he has a beautiful physique!  He loves to chase the tennis balls and retrieves them for you too!  Now that is a new concept, the resident Golden RETRIEVER makes me retrieve the balls for her!  I think she has us trained, smart girl!  Tucker is doing so well at sitting patiently to get treats.  When I go in the treat closet, he sits right down and he wants to get up so, so bad and I can just see it in his eyes…treat, treat, treat, hurry give me a treat!

Tomorrow we have an appointment to visit the vet and get him micro chipped and do a fecal to make sure that department is fine and clear!  Then we may go and visit another foster dog and play for a bit too!

Thank you for reading up on Tucker!

Winking at his foster sister!

Original Intial Bio:

Welcome Tucker to the RAGOM family!  Tucker is a 10 month old Golden Retriever Labrador mix who was surrendered by a loving family due to no fault of his own.  They took excellent care of this guy!  He came with a letter to his new forever home and a picture drawn by his human sibling, how sweet is that!  Sometimes families have to make heart wrenching decisions, but they wanted the best for Tucker and decided it would be best he find a new home.  Thank you to Tucker's family for allowing RAGOM to find a special family for this precious guy.

Tucker is handsome guy, is reddish in color and is so, so, so soft!  That face just melts your heart!  He is a sweetie and I absolutely love his big ears!

Tucker met the resident GR Penny Rose and the minute they met, they wrestled, wrestled, wrestled!  That will tell you something about his easy going, go lucky attitude, because resident GR can snub anyone, anytime!  We have another name for it, but this is a family website!  He also wants to "make friends" with her and she just ignores him.  We will work on that!  He is neutered, so I am somewhat perplexed by it, but she is beautiful, so that may be why!

Tucker came all up to date on his shots, neutered as mentioned and the only thing he needs is to be microchipped!  He is also house trained and gets free roam of the house!  Wow, that is a first for a foster for me!

Tucker needs a family that will commit to obedience training and exercise this young pupp!  He know how to sit and he takes treats really well.  He has taken all of the toys out of the toy box, plays with them for 30 seconds and goes to the next one!  So we would call that the "toddler stage!"  Lots of puppy left in this special sweetie!

If you are looking for a young dog that is past the chewing stages, house trained and past all of those " puppy vet visits" contact your placement advisor.  I am telling you he is a special dog that will complete your family!
