9/16/07: We have had the nicest gentleman as a houseguest this weekend.  He came to RAGOM with an atrocious name so part of our job was to find a name that is as wonderful as the dog.  This majestic guy is 9 years old.  He has spent his entire life in a puppy mill – and his tail wags almost constantly.   It never ceases to amaze me how dogs from a puppy mill can still believe in us – the humans who kept them caged, fed them so poorly and had few or no good words to pass their way.

So, not to keep you in suspense – it was decided that an older gentleman of his demeanor should be given a true movie star name.  We have decided there is no better representative of a gentile movie star than Gary Cooper – so Cooper it is.  Of course Errol Flynn ran a close second.   My personal favorite was Roy Rogers but when I looked in his eyes – he said, please not Roy !

Cooper is thin but gaining strength.  He has been neutered and after his dental work, will be in much better shape.  We all know that when our teeth hurt – nothing is right with our world.  He met my group of 3 Goldens and one very ancient (23 years) cat.  All went well and has continued to go well.  Cooper likes being outside – but he thinks the kitchen of the house is way cool.  There is a huge white box that holds large amounts of food, and an oven that you can peek in the window and see stuff cooking.

The second best place in the world to him is that soft spot right next to Mom’s side of the bed – AHHH.  Honestly, you can hear him say that.

Cooper is the best possible dog in so many ways.  He is easy to have, but would prefer a sibling so he knows how a dog should act in a house.  He has some lessons to learn but will learn them quickly, he wants to do whatever you think is the best thing and is so easy to correct.   At 9 years old, this great guy is an unwritten slate and I think a bit of a clown.   It will take some time for his personality to fully develop, but something tells me he has a great sense of humor – how else do you survive what he has and still want to lick a face?

Cooper is looking for a very special someone(s) – don’t miss out on one of the most gratifying experiences ever - giving a home to a dog who will thank you every minute of every day!

This is Mystic (formerly Cooper 07-561) with RAGOM) on the North Shore of Lake Superior. He's another mill dog out of Missouri who I adopted almost exactly one year ago. He had been in the mill for nine years and in foster care for several months. Mystic is one of the most loving animals I have ever met, even after so much hardship. His calm and forgiving soul serves as a reminder to us all about the importance of living life to its fullest every minute of every day. Thank you Mystic!

This is Mystic (on left) and Zalee again.

Cooper is really getting into the routine of my household. His comfort level and trust level improves all the time. He is pretty easy to have around.

Yesterday he went to the vet to check on his progress with skin and ear infections. He has new medicine and will return in a week to see how things are going. Last week I took him to the groomer's for a really good bath. He had to climb stairs. He could do it because he had just learned how to do that at my home. Now coming back down was another story! Someone had to carry him. Wow ! Did he ever look handsome. His fur is looking better and better and getting a really nice dark reddish color. He eats like a horse, about 6-7 cups a day. He weighs in at 63 pounds. I would like to see a lot more muscle mass on him. That will come slowly as he has not had much exercise in the first 9 years of his life. Now we walk two times a day. He loves it.

You can just see the bloodhound in him as he sniffs the scents left by the night animals. This morning both dogs were excited as a trio of coyotes had passed through about an hour before we went out. I am so happy his dog instincts get aroused.

He continues to enjoy people. He got tons of attention at my Halloween party. He was so well behaved. He didn't beg for food. He just wandered around getting pets from everyone.

His medical issues are under control now and I think anyone could continue to bring this good old boy around to the Golden life. He doesn't play with Harrison, my resident dog, but I can tell he likes him around. I am hoping that he will start playing with toys now that his dental surgery is healed. He does keep a few tennis balls in his bed. Come on down to southern Minnesota and have a look at this great old guy.

Cooper went through his dental work this morning very well.  He had 10 extractions so his mouth is probably a bit sore right now.  He will be so much more comfortable when these heal.  Dr. J has placed him on a steroid for the “itchies” he exhibited while with us for the weekend.  I had given him some Benedryl after checking with ACH to make sure he could have that with his other meds.  They did do skin scrapings and those were all negative for mites and other nasty critters.

Cooper is just waiting for a soft bed and some TLC from one of our great fosters!
