Zoe 11-130

Profile

Zoe found her way to RAGOM because her family was moving into an apartment, and they were unable to take her with. After getting Zoe in our home we can see it must have been hard to give her up. Zoe is still a puppy, being she was born in June of 2010. However, she is fully potty trained and still getting used to being crated during the day. She is very curious and a little leery of new things. However, her curiosity usually wins and she is overcoming her fears with her increased bravery.

Zoe is a Golden Retriever mix and weighs about 35 pounds. We just switched her food to one with less filler, she loves it and we think she may fill out more now.

Zoe already knows the “sit” command and we are working on “lay down,” which she is already catching on to. She is very smart and sweet and we think she would be easily trained. We don’t have any other pets, but have exposed her to other dogs and kids. She sniffs the air when around other dogs in her curiosity to find out more about them. Our crazy neighbor wiener dogs were saying “hi” to Zoe by barking at her and Zoe does not bark back…she just leans in tentatively to get into better sniffing range. We are hoping to have a play date with a friend’s dog soon. She was excited around the kids and new people, because she thinks she found new playmates. We are working with her to break her “puppy” habit of jumping when she is excited. Zoe used to live with two teenage girls, so we know she is used to having “siblings.”

Zoe has a history with being crated at night at her previous owners and will go in the crate with some coaxing and minor whining, but really doesn’t like being in there. She currently is only crated when we are not at home.

Zoe has been to the vet and is fully up to date and has a microchip implanted. We need to wait until Zoe is spayed to close an adoption, which is approximately the beginning of June. If you are interested in meeting Zoe she would love to meet you.

Zoe is doing great!  We love her to death.  Jim and I love to come home to her excitement.  Our kids come over just to visit her.  She loves to go on walks and go to the cabin with us.  This summer we are able to let her run free at the lake.  She has lots of room to run around.  We have worked with her to get along with other dogs.  She has several dog cousins...Stella, Jack, and Honey.  Jim's parents love to watch her when we are out of town.

I have attached a few pictures.

Good news! Zoe has found her forever family and they agreed to adopt Blue Sheep and Woodchuck too (her favorite toys)! That was really good news to Zoe. Not only does she get to bring her friends along, but she is also gaining two more family members. She was so excited to see her new family show up today and was even more excited to go for a car ride. Without missing a beat she jumped right into the car to go to her forever home.

It was hard to see Zoe go, but we know she is going to be loved very much by her four new family members. We’ll miss you Zoe!

Zoe had another weekend filled with new experiences, although not exactly that much fun. Zoe was spayed on Sunday and is currently recovering from her surgery. She was doing well, with her spirits already rising by the end of the surgery day, encouraged with some snuggling with her blue sheep. Her ears and eyes really perked up with some coaxing of some sausage snacks before she took her pain meds. Zoe even took over the remote because she wanted to watch CSI Miami without channel surfing. With a good night's sleep her spirits were way up and she was near her normal excited self, roaring to go. She was a little disappointed when she found out we can’t play very hard until she is 100 %. Our biggest objective this week is going to keep Zoe from being too active so she heals well. This is going to be difficult to do for a 11 month old with so much puppy energy. She will be looking forward to walks outside and playing uninhibited in the backyard soon!

If you want to meet Zoe and learn more about RAGOM she will be at the Eden Prairie PetSmart from 11-2 this coming Saturday the 21st.

Zoe had a big weekend. She traveled with us in the car for two hours to Wisconsin and was a great travel companion. My wife and I took turns sitting in the back seat with her, but for the most part she would sit nicely or lay down. We have included a picture of her curled up in the car during the adventure.

While in Wisconsin she met a bunch of new people. First, she met Grandma Rosie. We were worried 11 month old dog instincts may be to jump up on grandma, but she was well behaved considering all the new stimulants. Zoe was sniffing around at Grandma’s house and came upon a small dog statue, which scared her first until she realized the statue was not a real dog. She is really new to a lot of stuff so jumps back or is cautious to go or do something she isn’t quite sure about.

The next stop was at the in laws, where our nephews were also visiting. The nephews are 6, 5 and 1 years old. They were very excited to meet Zoe and she did great with them. She sniffed all of them, but did not jump on anyone. Zoe was very respectful around our 1 year old nephew, because if Noah was close to being under foot while she was on the way to something she would take over reactive steps to make sure she didn’t step on him.

At the end of the day trip we stopped at the Grandma Betty’s. Zoe was very well behaved there too, although was getting tired. She did get a little mischievous and did pull a few tissues out of the garbage can with full guilt written on her face. I think some of it was boredom and some she was just checking her “boundaries” at this new place. By the end of the evening at Grandma's she was sacked out, sleeping on Grandma’s floor. We had to practically carry her to the car since she was so tired to head back home. She slept in my lap the 2 hour ride home.

This morning when Zoe went outside she was sniffing around and a rabbit took off racing to the next yard. Zoe stood still and watch the rabbit hop away, but never barked, just curious. As soon as the rabbit was out of sight she went back to sniffing. She obviously had more important things to do then to bark at a rabbit. J

We have decided Zoe is pretty much the perfect dog. She does not shed very much, not like a Pure Bred Golden Retriever. She is smaller than a PBGR (35lbs i.e. borderline lap dog J). She does not bark very often, and loves to be with people, (she is the shadow for my wife and wants to know where she is at all times). She has been a joy to have around and brings a lot of smiles to us throughout the day.

Good news, for all you Zoe lovers out there, she is going to be ready for adoption sooner than we anticipated. Zoe is scheduled to be spayed on May15th and will be ready for adoption soon after that.

Zoe had a big weekend with 2 play dates, the most recent with Stella, a Portuguese Waterdog. With her play dates she has started to progress with her social skills with other dogs. She is very curious, but not quite ready to jump in and play yet without some caution. We have started some training with a clicker combined with yummy treats. These treats were yummy enough that Zoe was picking up on her training in no time. We were even able to get her to walk into her kennel and lay down, which she has had some anxiety about entering on her own will.

We tested Zoe this weekend to see if she can be left free roam for a couple of hours and she past with flying colors. With our first errand she started off being just confined to the office, and with her good behavior we expanded into the living room and dining room on another errand we had to do. We do though think she just sat by the door in anticipation to us getting home. Our next step will be to see how she does for longer periods of time than just a couple of hours.

Click here to see how tired she was after her long weekend of 2 play dates, obedience training, and of course a lot of playing in the yard.

Please contact your adoption coordinator if you are interested in meeting this wonderful addition to your family. She seems to really like her people and has no limits in showing it.

We continue to work with Zoe on obedience and she is training us too. We have learned we need to keep our food out of her range. J One day my husband had his work bag on the floor with a Rice Crispy breakfast bar tucked deep in his work bag. He left the room for a few moments and came back to Zoe holding his Rice Krispy bar with the look of ½ guilty and ½ pride. It was actually pretty cute. She let go of the bar when we asked and now we know to zip the workbag up and keep it out of snout range. She is not a counter surfer. Zoe is not a true Velcro dog, but does like to be in the same room as people at all times.

We are trying to break Zoe of the habit of jumping up on us when she is excited to see us. She is getting better at listening, but sometimes she is just so excited to see us. A habit/game we are trying to break, we also think she will grow out of, is her “puppy” biting. She will gently bite our hands and we will tell her “no” and then give her a toy to chew on. She gets praises for playing with her toys. We have also been getting Zoe acclimated to her gentle leader by taking her on 10-15 minute walks in the neighborhood and she seems to be getting comfortable wearing it.

Zoe is a very quiet dog. We have only heard her bark a few times and when she has barks she seems to surprise herself. She is still leary of new experiences, noises and objects, but her puppy curiosity usually conquers the fear. She will take any treats from us very gently, including ice cubes, which she has really taken a liking to.

She had her first play date with her Puggle friend, Milo last night which she was pretty scarred of him to start out with. She was curious enough though to get in a good sniff when Milo wasn’t looking. If Milo looked at her she would run away. However, as soon as he turned his head again Zoe would go over and sniff him again. Toward the end of the play date Zoe was starting to warm up more to Milo and wanting to roughhouse a little, but cautiously. Zoe will be having another play day with a friend's Portuguese Waterdog on Sunday.

Zoe will be Spayed the beginning of June and will be available for Adoption after that, but she is ready to meet her furever family now.
