I would like to introduce you to Jackie, a beautiful, red, 5.5-year-old, female, purebred Golden Retriever.
Her date of birth is 11/5/10, and she weighs 78 pounds. Jackie is a former breeding mama who was surrendered along with Rose 16-105 and Beau 16-106. They were in boarding for a few days before going to their foster homes, so they were microchipped and brought up to date on shots while in boarding. We were told that Jackie is afraid of men, and she showed it when I handed the leash to the male transporter so I could let my resident dogs out. She became a bucking bronco, so I took the leash back and he let my dogs out. She met my dogs in the yard with no problem and seemed happy to see other dogs. Many dogs that we get from breeders have never been inside of a house, so they are afraid of steps, doorways, and everything in a home. Jackie followed my dogs right into the house, so I was relieved that I didn’t have to carry her in! We never know if breeder dogs have ever been in a house, so we assume that they are not housebroken. Jackie had one accident in the house on the first day because she was scared and didn’t know how to tell me that she needed to go outside. She has not had any more after that, but I get the dogs outside on a regular schedule (when they wake up, an hour after they’ve eaten, and before bed) and many times in between.
We knew that Jackie would be very scared, so I had a crate set up so she could hide in there while getting familiar with our home. She looked into the crate, but didn’t want to go in, so she decided that her safe spot would be under the kitchen table. We made a comfy bed under the table, and after a week of looking at an empty crate, I finally took it down. Jackie wants to be within sight of me and is usually lying by my feet. The first day here, she was brave enough to be in the living room with my dogs and me.
Jackie went to the vet for her wellness exam and came home with ear drops for her infected ears, amoxicillin for her elevated temperature, a plan to remove a broken canine when she goes in for her spay surgery on July 12th, and a suggestion to get her to lose some weight by eating good food. She has dry skin and spots of thinning fur. Jackie also had an infected mammary gland, so the vet will check that for a possible tumor.
Fast movements and loud noises scare her, so she should go to a home with children 10 or over. Young children don’t understand that she needs time to learn to trust people she doesn’t know. It took over 2 hours for Jackie to come out into the living room when my 2 grandsons were here. She sniffed one of their hands and actually licked it. Now she lets them pet her if there aren’t any new people in the house. She didn’t want to eat the first few days, but now she is eager to eat her good food. Baby steps every day bring her closer to going to her forever home.
