Happy. Loveable. Energetic. Just a few of the many words my foster mom uses to describe me. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Shadow. I’m 50% Golden Retriever, 50% Belgian Shepherd and 100% wonderful. I’m excited to meet new people and animals and “should be the poster child for foster dogs” according to my foster mom.

I’m seven years old, but don’t act like a day over six! I’m a pretty healthy boy. I may have some mild arthritis in my hips because I sometimes seem to favor them when walking. I do have cataracts as well, but so far, I still can see things very well. I was surrendered to RAGOM because the children in my home were getting older, and no one had the time to keep me occupied and engaged.

I LOVE to exercise – walking on a leash with my resident dog friends and foster mom, in the house with whatever toys are declared “for the dogs” and gently wrestling around with my foster brother, Indy. I like walking so much that if you forget, I’ll remind you daily that I want/need my walk by being in your face repeatedly and giving you “the look.”

I get along great with dogs, children, adults and even cats! My foster mom has only heard me bark one time in a week, and that was when I was playing with Indy. While I might not make a lot of noise, other things do – and they sometimes startle me, so please – be careful with fireworks and other loud noises.

I’m a really good boy. Does that mean I’m perfect? Of course not, but I’m working on it! I like walking so much that I tend to pull because I’m just so excited to “go!” I occasionally smell something delightful on the table or counter and may hop up for closer inspection. I get really close to my foster mom when she’s got some food, because it smells waaaayy better than my food.

Because I need a lot of exercise, I would like to go to a home with a fenced yard where I can run freely - but I’ll still want my walks with you, because I enjoy your company! I need a family that will play with me and keep my mind sharp and my body moving.

And what will you get? I promise you years of love, kisses, fun walks, games and more. According to my foster mom, I’m the “total package.”

Updates

Shadow here, with my final update. Oh, happy day - a loving family with a fenced in yard decided to make me a part of their family! I have kids to play with, a new dog brother, Barkley, and my own bed. My new mom has lots of time to spend with me; I can't wait to hang out with her!

Thank you to all of my friends at RAGOM for making this possible. I know my foster mom will be helping another dog soon, and she will love him or her just as much.

Shadow reporting. Sorry it's been so long since I've updated you. The foster mom always has her phone - it's tough to sneak off with it. So, today's a big day for me; I'm getting a visit from a potential furever home! I'll keep you posted - gotta go for now!

Shadow here! The foster mom took me to what she called an "eye specialist" today for my cataracts. I don't know what an eye specialist is, but he put some drops in my eyes, some bright lights and did a few tests. He had yummy treats, so I left him do his thing.

There was some sort of discovery made: apparently I don't have cataracts (whatever that means) - I'm just a bit more mature than RAGOM thought. They thought I was 7 years old, but according to the "eye specialist" I'm actually between 9-10 years old. He says I have a tiny cataract in one of my eyes, but he doesn't think that there is much risk at all of it becoming a "thing" that will affect my vision. He said my eyes just show normal age for a distinguished gentleman of 9-10 years old.

That's good news to potential family that wants to adopt me! So, bring 'em on!

Hi All,

The foster mom and I made it to the adoption event at Chuck & Don's in Shakopee today. What a great crowd! I was so excited to see my friends and make some new ones. I was pretty talkative and made sure everyone knew I was there to pawty! I did miss my good friend Barry, who's on the me mend. I'm sure his furry friend Joe is looking after him.

Happy Valentine's Day!  Happy Valentine's Day from Laura Kreun!

Sunday, February 7, 2016

Hi All,

At the phone while my foster mom is distracted. Just checking in to say "hello" to you future adopters. Not to pat myself on the back, but my foster mom says I am a better car riding dog than my resident bro, Indy. I'm calm and settle down easily for the trip - whether it's five minutes or five hours.

It's a beautiful sunny Sunday . I keep hearing about some big football game that's on tonight , but I think the foster mom is talking about another Netflix binge. That just equates to "snuggle fest" for me!

Anyway, just wanted you to know I'm just chilling out, waiting for you apply to adopt me ;-)

Shadow reporting! Foster mom left the phone unattended again, so I wanted to give you all a quick pupdate. Just wanted to mention how well I get along with other dogs - have I told you that before?

Shadow15316h1.jpg

The weather is finally getting warmer so my foster bro Indy and I have been getting longer walks (finally!). I met a really nice lady on our walk a few nights ago. Her friend said I was beautiful and she came over to meet me. She sounded interested in finding out more about me - so if she's reading this: I think you give the best pats on the head! I could tell you were a nice lady when I trotted over confidently to meet you.

Until I find my forever home, I will happily spend my days here - safe, happy and with my pal, Indy.

Shadow here! My foster mom left her phone out, so I have to be quick in typing this up before she gets back. I know most of you appreciate how handsome I am, but did you know that my personality and good manners make me a superstar?

- I am 100% housebroken and have never messed in my foster home
- I behave well and have free roam of the foster home all day while my foster mom works
- I get along GREAT with other dogs and haven't met one yet that I don't like
- I love people even more :-)
- I love snuggling with my people and will happily follow you everywhere, especially after a nice bout of exercise
- I love running and would make a great running partner for you!

RAGOM is accepting applications for me now, so if you're a loving person (or family), apply now. Once you meet me, you'll agree - I'm pretty pawsome!

Shadow continues to be a love bug! We are still working on his restraint when treats are around with a "do nice" command so that I can keep all of my fingers. Also trying to teach him to "shake" but he just thinks that there's a treat in the hand trying to shake with him, so that's all he pays attention to :-). He and Indy like to keep close tabs on all things food in this house.

Shadow15316f1.jpg

With the really cold days we had late last week/early this week, I really didn't get him or Indy out for very long, so we made up for it on the days that warmed up this week. Looks like we're in for another cold snap this weekend - so it will be another round of "walk around the living room" for exercise for all of us.

Until it warms up again, Shadow finds ways to stay snuggled and warm!

Shadow went to the vet today to get checked out for a few things. Luckily, the vet says he's a good weight - because he enjoyed his first Starbucks "Puppachino" (whipped cream in a small cup) on the way. Not-so-great news: Shadow has laryngeal paralysis. Shadow's future family will need to know that extreme heat and humidity can make symptoms worse, so must make sure he's comfortable in the warm summer months.

Until Shadow has a new place to call home, Indy and I will continue to keep him active, loved and part of our pack.

Shadow continues to be a star with his winning personality and big heart. He's so playful with my resident dog, Indy. They really enjoy each other's company. Yesterday we decided to skip the walk on the road and I took them to the park by the Minnesota River and we had a good time sniffing around and taking in the sunshine and nature.
Shadow15316d2.jpg

Shadow has become a magician with socks. He makes them disappear - but they reappear later (by him getting sick, and reproducing them in various forms). I've learned to make sure there's nothing left out for him to chew up and shut the doors to the bedrooms when leaving. I think some of this chewing may be attributed to his high need for exercise and being uprooted from this previous home life. He came from a home with a fenced in yard and doesn't have that now, so this is probably a tough adjustment for him. He has a chew toy designed for helping with his need to crunch and he really likes to tear into that thing ;-)
Shadow is getting used to the Gentle Leader but he still doesn't like it and occasionally tries to remove it. He can be distracted many times with moving the walking pace to a jog and then he forgets about it for a while.
Shadow does seems to bark now on occasion - at other dogs. If we're out walking he will get a little mouthy when he sees other dogs, and also if he sees them outside the window. He was okay with temp foster's cats, but if he's outside on the leash with me, he seems to have a bit of a prey drive - or at least the interest in pursuing small critters.
Shadow also has a very pronounced pant regardless of his activity level. He is being brought to the vet on Thursday, 12/31 to be examined. My guess is he needs to lose some weight as well, which will help with that. I'll share another update after his vet appointment.
Overall, Shadow is a wonderful, happy and loving dog. I think he misses having a family to play with and he would be very happy with a family including children. That is, of course, if they will share their favorite "spot."
Shadow15316d3.jpg

Shadow sleeps on a dog bed on the floor in my bedroom and I know he would like to sleep on the bed, but its height makes it too difficult for him to get up there with me. Regardless of where he lays his head, he just needs a warm, safe and loving place to call his forever home.
