Merry Christmas from Gretchen Austin
Love, Amber (14-345)
Ms. Penny has found her forever family. Kathy and Jim are experienced rescued-dog owners who are calm and patient. Penny gets along with her new foster sister Kate. We know that they all will give Penny the loving and patient care she deserves and requires to continue to grow in confidence. Penny, you hit the jackpot!
We’re sorry that we haven’t updated you on Penny for a while, but there have been a lot of things going on besides the holidays.
About three weeks ago, Penny had her spay surgery and our vet also checked out a mammary tumor that looked like it could be concerning. The spay surgery went well and they removed the tumor (with good margins). After a few days of worrying, we finally got the results of the pathology report. The tumor was diagnosed as a “complex mammary adenoma.” To our lay understanding, if you are going to have cancer, this is a good one to have. It is very slow-growing and can be successfully removed and stopped.
Penny took a step or two backwards (which we pretty much expected) as she holed up in her safe spot in the bedroom to rest and recover. Slowly, a little bit each day, she began to join us in the living room or kitchen as she had done before. Last Monday, she had her stitches out and was pretty much back to her old self.
However, on the day before Christmas Eve, she began to have vomiting spells. This continued into Christmas Eve day and she also seemed very lethargic. Over to the vet clinic we went, and X-rays indicated that she had “a bunch of stuff in her stomach that doesn’t belong there.” Our vet decided that surgery was needed right away. Poor Penny spent Christmas and the weekend recovering from yet another surgery. We knew that, when she first arrived at our house, she had chewed some holes in socks left lying around and we had also caught her gnawing at a throw rug, and apparently some of the material hadn’t moved through and was blocking things.
We were very happy and relieved to see that she made it through the surgery and is now at home recovering. She is back in her safe spot and is pretty well zonked out on pain pills at the moment. Our senior resident dog (Harley) was very glad to see her back home and spent some time sleeping next to her in the bedroom to keep her company.
We’ll be taking things slow and easy for the next couple of weeks, as a second major surgery within 21 days has got to be hard on her. We’re being extra vigilant about leaving anything at all lying around within her potential reach. One good thing we’ve discovered during this whole process is that kenneling her at night and when we are gone seems to give her more confidence (and keeps her out of trouble). Initially, it was a struggle getting her to go into the kennel, but a liberal application of treats helped! Last night at bedtime (her first night home from her second surgery), we took her outside to do her jobs, gave her a treat, and watched as she headed into her kennel on her own to go to sleep.
We’re so glad to see that Penny has sponsors and also has some great Christmas icons. Thank you, Jim and Kathy Wika, Gretchen Austin, and the forever family of Amber 14-345 (now Peaches – the world’s happiest dog), for these wonderful Christmas presents. Your generosity will help RAGOM pay the vet bills!
Penny has one more thing we should tell you about. She has a family interested in adopting her! After she has a chance to recover, we will be excited to have Penny meet them and her possible four-legged sister. Stay tuned for more in this saga!
Ms. Penny has had a busy couple of weeks since we last updated you. Every day seems to involve a bit more exploration of the house. Although she will still go back to her safe spot in our bedroom, she is gradually spending more time with us in the living room. Yesterday, she actually lay down on a rug with her friends Beau and Harley. After a few minutes, she headed back into the bedroom, but this is progress!
Last week’s snow storm forced us to cancel her spay appointment. She is now scheduled for later this week and she will also have her mammary tumors checked out. Please keep fingers and paws crossed! Her ears and eyes appear to be clearing up well. We’ll have both checked out while she is at the vet. Several more baths as well as the ear drops have Penny smelling more like the sweet dog she is. Penny’s other big news this week is that she has a sponsor! Thanks so much to Kathy and Jim Wika for sponsoring Penny in memory of their Golden, Sydney. We know that good vetting costs money and their gift will help RAGOM give Penny the care she deserves.
We’ve discovered that our house is going to be a lot neater and cleaner as long as Penny is living with us. She considers any item on the floor, socks, shoes, paper, etc., as fair game. The items are snatched up, taken to her dog bed, gnawed, chewed on, and generally destroyed. We’re working with her to find and substitute suitable chew toys, but we feel, at least for now, that although she is fine with older kids, they had better not be kids who are used to leaving a trail of toys and clothes on the floor.
Penny is very lucky in that she has two Resident Dogs to help her learn all of the ins and outs of being a family dog. She has decided that our 14-year-old, Harley, is her preferred walking companion as he walks more at her speed and walks in a straight line rather than in Beau’s zigs and zags. We take them on one long walk and several shorter walks each day. She and Beau (our 8-year-old), however, are spending more and more time together. They are the two who come up to us together to get pets and scritchies. We’re starting to call the two of them our “big two- headed dark brown dog.” They push in together as close as they can to get that attention!
This morning, we caught Penny walking up to Beau as he was eating and putting her head right into his bowl as he was eating to help him finish his meal.
We’re looking forward to getting Penny’s spay surgery done this week. After she recovers, we want to start getting her to meet-and-greets so you will have a chance to meet her. If you are interested in learning more about Penny right now, we would be glad to talk with you anytime. Please let your Placement Advisor know and she can give us your contact information.
