In addition to LOVE this dog has the following requirements:
Entered Foster Care Fence Kid Friendly Another Dog Cat Friendly
8/14/2014 Optional Adult family preferred Optional Yes
This is the most recent information available; however, it may change as we learn more about the dog.

Nevada is an aristocratic, gorgeous Lab/Golden mix. She is 11 years and in great shape. Nevada looks younger and her favorite activity is daily walks of about one mile each. She is spayed and her weight is ideal at 75 lbs. Nevada passed her recent senior wellness exam with flying colors. This lady was well cared for and it shows.

She has lived a wonderful life as a beloved family member. Her previous family has grown to include children. Babies, toddlers make Nevada uncomfortable. Nevada will retreat to the basement where it is quiet. Her family hates seeing her pull back from the family life and know that she probably needs a very quiet household to enjoy her twilight years.

Nevada does well with other dogs as long as they are not jumping all over her. She has lived with a cat and they got along great. Nevada will probably be best with older, quieter children or in an adult-only household. She never shows aggression. She has no resource guarding of any kind.

She does have separation anxiety that has been effectively managed for years with daily Prozac and free roam (she cannot be kenneled).

The family who chooses Nevada will be patient and understanding. Her anxieties are real and at times severe. A family experienced with dogs who suffer from anxieties is ideal. Nevada is leaving for a new home after 10 years with a family. Change can be frightening. Older dogs (like people) are more set in their habits and less flexible. It will take her some time to feel like she is safe. She does have medication, but also requires somebody who will be home with her most of the time, or a Doggie Daycare nearby, until she feels safe and trusts she is home for good. She will probably always be a special-needs dog emotionally. Nevada has had episodes where she was destructive to property in the home. These were isolated incidents and clear signs the poor girl just cannot handle what is currently going on in her environment. She was able to overcome her separation anxiety in her last home, so we know it is possible. Medications do help her. Nevada's future family needs to be able to totally accept her. If they do that, she will bring love, joy, learning to her special family.

It is with a very heavy heart that I write this final tribute to Miss Nevada.  Nevada was the quintessential Golden Girl. She had the spunk of Ma, the silliness  of Rose, the sexiness of Blanche, but I think her gruffness, like Dorothy, was my favorite part of her. She didn't take any talking back from the younger dogs in my house, but even my nasty little chihuahua knew he could cuddle up to her every night for bedtime. Nevada took comfort in having her roommates around. But, sometimes things  just get too overwhelming and we are not able to control them, even with all the love in the world or with the best medication. It was decided the most loving thing we could do for this old gal was to let her go where there  were no more demons dancing in her head. It was a tough decision, but one made with love and understanding, to send Miss Nevada to the rainbow bridge. She will be waiting for all of us as we all go to meet her when our time comes. Miss you sweet old girl, may you rest in peace.

About time for another update on Miss Nevada. Think I'm gonna liken her to Grandma Esther Walton this time.

Mary Ellen Walton: [while helping serve dinner] It must be awful to be somebody's wife and have to do this every day of your life!

'Grandma' Esther Walton: Well, if you don't learn to be a little more pleasant, you won't have that problem to worry about!

Grandma (Esther) Walton: Rise and shine, you two!

Jason Walton: I'll rise, but I sure won't shine.

Miss Nevada is so much like Esther Walton. Nevada is a tish gruff, but still, she has so much love to give. When my young Golden's are wrestling and she starts barking at them, I can almost hear Esther saying, " Oh, you two! Are you done with your school studies? Well, then get busy and get them done, I need help preparing supper!" Nevada helps keep my pack of dogs in order. They all respect her, as they should respect their elders. Everyone gets along in my home, thank goodness! Nevada has never shown any interest in my cockatiel or in my guinea pig. She really gets along with every living creature.

Miss Nevada turned 12 years old in December, but you would never know it! She loves being outside. She does run and play with my dogs, but not for long, She is too mature to carry on like that for too long! Lol! Nevada likes to go on walks, which I havent been able to do as I had foot surgery and dont do too much walking myself right now. This bitter cold does not seem to bother her too much either. She loves being out in my fenced yard. I give all my dogs raw beef bones. She LOVES chewing on them!

As far as home for Nevada, I would suggest no small children as they make her nervous. I think she really needs someone home with her most of the time. I'm retired so I'm mostly home. I have been gone for as little as 30 minutes, and as long as a 9 hour trip to the city. Nevada is always glad to see me, and there is nothing out of place. She has the potential to be the perfect companion, if you can just supply her with what she needs.

Just let your placement advisor know if you would like more info on Miss Nevada, cuz I would love to tell you about her!

Looks like I'm overdue with my update from the "home". Hahaha!! Miss Nevada is doing GReat here! These retirement homes are so relaxing.... The food must be good too as she has gained 5 pounds. She loves chewing on beef bones on occasion, kind of her part time hobby, easy than knitting since she does not have thumbs to hold the knitting needles!

I have been thinking of who Miss Nevada would be if she were human, and I've come up with the perfect one, Jessica Tandy. Think....Driving Miss Daisy...older, but spunky old gal who expects respect, but has a wonderful, generous heart. Jessica was also Ninny Threadgoode in Fried Green Tomatoes. Another spunky, great old gal with a warm, loving heart, and just a tish of mischievousness. Miss Nevada is just such a wonderful old gal in the right environment.

I'm working closely with my vet and we have Nevada's aniexity under pretty good control. She is down to one pill every morning. Her spirits are high and she is doing well on that dose. Nevada has been with me a little over a month now. I have been gone as long as 9 hours, and as little as 15 minutes. Never have come back home to see a mess or any issue. I have 5 of my own dogs ranging in age from 8 months to 15 years, 5 pounds to 75 pounds, she gets along with all of them. I also have 3 cats, she is fine with them also. I really feel her anxiety is being handled well with her meds and the companionship of another dog. She does rarely interact with the other dogs, a little 3-5 minute playtime once in a while. I think when I'm gone she is comforted by their presence.

So, the next retirement home Miss Nevada is looking for would have the following requirements: A human that is home most of the time. Can be a man , woman, or both. Older quiet teenagers would be ok too. She does not need a fence, would be ok on a tie out for short periods. She loves her walks, so someone who might be able to walk her once a day. Another calm dog would be great, but not a must have.  Miss Nevada will let you know if she hears something amiss, but is not a barker.

I just cannot say enough wonderful things about this great old gal! Is she the companion you have been searching for? If you feel you are the right home and can drive Miss Nevada (think Driving Miss Daisy) around, please, oh please, contact your placement advisor. You won't be sorry!

Hello..... any snowbirds out there?! Have I got a great dog for you!! Nevada has moved south, down to a new foster in Iowa. But she would love to go even further south with you! Nevada is a super gal who still has lots to offer. Don't let her age fool ya; she acts so much younger. She is used to going on daily walks of about a mile, or not, if you're more sedentary like me (lol)! She loves to travel in a car, van, mobile home; whatever you are driving, she will be right by your side. She loves her people, but will respect your space also. She has some separation anxiety which is perfectly handled by the medication she takes daily. She gets a little nervous around busy children, but would be OK when the grandchildren come to visit; as long as she has a quiet place to retreat to when it's a busy household, she will be fine. I have 3 Goldens of varying ages, 2 small dogs, and 3 cats. She gets along with all of them, but they all respect her and her space. Nevada is pretty much the perfect companion. She might not be pure Golden Retriever, but she definitely has the Golden heart. Please let me know if you would like to know more about this great ole gal!!
